I know this is a silly question, but since I can't make up my mind, I figured I'd get some opinions for fun :) I have 3 girls - 7 1/2, 3, and 13 months ... I'm trying to decide on what kind of Christmas dresses to get this year for pictures, etc .... all 3 matching dresses? Or one Red, one green, and one maybe gold ? Or any other ideas? Thanks :)

What can I do next?

I wouldn't make them match. That way as the younger ones grow, they can wear one of the other questions the next year, and not have to wear the same one as before.

I love matchy-matchy for special occasions and when they were younger, dressed my three boys in either matching or coordinating outfits. The Children's Place has great sales and really beautiful, classic clothes. What I really liked is that I could match or coordinate outfits from the infant, little kid and big kid sizes. I would do with very similar dresses but maybe keep them a little different. For example, my boys would maybe all wear the same black pants and shoes but their shirts, ties and sweater vests would be the same blend of colors but not the exact same patterns.

Hi A. -
I love the idea posted of dresses in the same color family or your of "Christmas" colors but...I'd do the matching this year. My thought being that this is probably the only year you'll be able to find & get all three girls to agree (so to speak) to being in the same dress. In other words, your window of opportunity is closing. L! Something tells me come next year your nearly 9 year old will probably not want to be dressed like her 2 year old little sister. Ya know? L!
Good luck & Happy Holidays!!

I love the red, green, gold idea! Sounds sooo pretty!

We did our 2 dd's this year in 1 navy blue and 1 christmas red. Still thinking of the right color for our son -

If they all match it will be a boring picture - try coordinating dresses, one red, another plaid, another green - or dresses in the same style, different colors, etc. no matter what they'll be adorable. ;o)

I do matching for my girls.. but a friend has 6 kids and does shades of the same color... it looks REALLY great. b/c the photo has such a great tone/look to it but you don't know 'why' .. until you realize they are all in the same color.... but not in your face kind of way.

I try to stay away from the matching. a 7 1/2 and 3 year old can pick out their own pretty dresses and let them pick out one for baby sis. This will make better memories for them than the uniformed picture.

Just my two cents. I love organized, matching, and color coordinating everything...but I have to pull myself back and let the kids have some decisions. Sooo, last night "we" decorated the tree. It takes all my energy to hold back opinion and try not to dictate and take over so as to make the most "gorgeously matching and uniformed tree" but instead let THEM decorate and be creative.

I am not saying you are a control freak in any way...just thought I would pass on some insight to give yourself another option...let them choose their pretty dresses. You might just get hot pink, lavender and green!! It won't match...but they will love their dresses and the picture and each one will stand out in the photo.

Good luck and best wishes at having a flawless and peaceful photo shoot!!

I second Linda B. Don't do matching dresses (as in the same dress just different sizes), but DO do matching colors. And yeah.. if your 7 1/2 yr old will agree to it, this will probably be the LAST time she does.
Have fun!

My mom did matching dresses for my sister and I or matching type of dress in different colors (to better go with our hair). I wasn't bothered by it. One year I had purple and she had pink, but the same style. I think either the same style, different colors, or same dress. It's cute, as long as the dress translates well to all sizes. Don't make the 7 yr old look like a toddler.

Another poster also had a good idea that slightly different dresses can be passed down without the kid getting a repeat.

in thinking of hand-me-down's, I'd go different. It sometimes gets hard to see the kidswhen the dresses are the same. You could do 2 dresses and then a skirt/top for the older one to bring the 2 dresses together. You could do black/red/then a black red and white - black shoes would work for all.

I would not match them, but not clash them. That's too VonTrapp Family Singers for me. I would look for coordinating dresses. All 3 in the same color story.
Say if you find a a cream colored dress with little burgandy flowers on it for the baby, and a burgandy dress with a cream sash for the middle child, and black and cream dress for the oldest and put burgandy accessories in her hair and pin a burgandy flower to the dress. They can all wear black shoes that way and it will be a cohesive look in family photos.

This year my girls are wearing sweater dresses....both red but different style with fur boots. I have done matching dresses in the past but now that they are older (6 and 4) tend to do coordinating dresses. My girls actually are not bothered either way...and sometimes prefer to have the same dress.

I got similar dresses, same colors but with different sleeves and collars. They looked enough alike to be cute but each had it's own personality. I think as long as the styles and colors did not clash then anything you like is fine.

I work in a clothing store inside a dance/gymnastics business and we are clearing out our girls formal dresses up to 80% off so I have been buying a few...I am seriously trying to stay within just a few...lol.

For the girls in the foster home that adopted 2 of my grandchildren, one boy and one girl, (They also adopted another girl that had been their foster child since her birth) I bought a beautiful white Lida Dress with red flowers embroidered on it for one child and the other one is the home is getting a complete red Lida dress that has the same cut and style but again, it totally red. There is only a year and a hlaf age difference in the girls and they wear very close to the same size so the dresses can be interchangeable.

I also bought my girl that lives with me since birth a Lida dress that is mostly white but the bodice is a pretty pink satin folded in horizontal pleats. The hem has another strip of the pink satin, and the sheer bolero style jacket has the pink around the edges.

I love buying the girls such pretty dresses and seeing them all dressed up for the holidays. I hope yours love it too.

I have all boys and really missed the opportunity for Holiday dressing and the fun of that. But my sister has all girls, and she comes up with some adorable combinations:
One print dress in the group and all others have a solid color dress that coordinates with it, or she gets 4 colors that go well together. Last Christmas, she did one daughter each in red, green, blue and yellow. And how does she get around the shoe thing??? for the pictures, they are always in bare feet with toes polished in clear or light pink polish. It was an adorable photo!

Coordinating, but not matchy-matchy. My parents did this to my sister and I ALL THE TIME and we hated it. The pictures still make me cringe.

What about matching pjs for your photo? Nothing sweeter than little ones in matching fuzzy pjs on the stairs "waiting for Santa". Have fun and keep them comfortable! :D
