Children's Shoe Shops

Stride rite is closing most of its stores and going for a largely online presence. It's shoes will also be available in target. Any recommendations for a proper brick and mortar children's shoe shop? Can't think of any. None around here at least.

Thanks in advance
F. B.

I used to by Stride Rite. Then I realized that my kids wore out their shoes within a few months no matter what brand they wear. Now, I get them where-ever - sometimes Payless. Most recently JC Penney. That said, if you are looking for wide toddler shoes, you are probably better off buying online. We went to the brick and mortar JC Penny to find the right size and let my son choose the style, then we ordered from the store to their online department to get that exact shoe in a wide width.

My daughter never had stide rites. I got her shows from Babies R Us, Kohls and Target.

We have Kid's Foot Locker around here - I don't know if they are everywhere or not. I would check out the local malls first and see what shoe stores are in there. Many adult shoe stores (brick and mortar) also carry children's shoes.

Good luck!

I use Zappos.com. I find a brand that fits well and stick to it. They have free shipping and free returns and it's done quickly. Zappos carries every brand you can think of.

Outlet centers have shoe stores.

We have no children's shoe stores anywhere near our home. The only place around offering kids' shoes in wide is Nordstrom. That's the closest place to a quality shoe store, but their shoes are not cheap.

We generally do REI for kids shoes... this is more of a sporting goods place, but I have found their shoes work well for Kiddo. (His favorite is a Merrell slip on moccasin.)

Do you have Shoe Company, Shoe Warehouse or DSW? They all have a good selection of brand name children's shoes.

Nordstrom has a good shoe dept for kids. Also, we've had pretty good luck at Sketchers.

I bought my girls shoes at Olly after the stride rite near me closed many years ago.

My kids get most of their shoes at Payless. Their shoes are Stride Rite anyway but with a different tag and a better price. I have never been able to justify spending large amounts of money on shoes for the kids that they destroy and outgrow quickly anyway.
We've occasionally gotten shoes from REI when they go on clearance or a good sale, especially sandals because I won't buy open toe sandals. We've bought some at Target at times. Kohls can sometimes have something but not always.
