My kids have never slept thru the night. Now there are days where they will sleep but there is always one that wakes up. I just dont understand why they dont sleep thru the night. I try to leave some water by there bed, but then they just have another reason why they woke up. I just tired and need a full nights sleep, I have felt tired all day and when I should be cleaning I fall asleep on the couch for hours.(not while kids home they keep me busy then)

What can I do next?

What are your children doing when they wake up? How old are they? Do you get up with them? Children should be sleeping through the night shortly after the age of 1. Why do your children think it is ok to wake up in the middle of the night??
I may be able to help if I had a bit more information!

Are they taking long naps during the day? My 15 month old naps two times during the day (trying to keep him awake does not work because he gets really cranky)so he only sleeps about 8 hours at night (just started sleeping the 8 consecutive hours last month, before that he was up every 3 hours!)
What are you children eating at night?? Caffine, sugar, foods with certain dyes may be keeping them awake, waking them up.

G.,

My daughter use to wake up in the middle of the night and get in the bed with me. The became a nightly event. To get her to sleep thru the night, I bought a classical music C.D and at first let it play all night. After a week or two of her sleeping thru the night, I would let it play for a couple of hours and I would turn it off. Now it plays once, and shes out before the 3rd song ever plays. Plus, there have been studies that classical music increases their scores on standardized testing. 2 for 1 (LOL)!

Now she sleeps through the night, in her own bed!

Hello G.:

I don't know the age of your children BUT, we have a set of twins B/G 16 months old. We have had trouble with them sleeping at night. We did find out that one needed tubes in his ears which we have done and he is much better. Mackenzie on the other hand is up 4-6 times a night. After 4 months of test and doctor visits we found that she has apnea and enlarged tonsils and adnoise. Again, not sure of the age or any illnesses, just thought I would share any ideas. Good Luck and god bless.

I used to have the same problem with my boy who's now 5yrs old (and has ADHD) and am currently having the same problem with my 1yr old. There's a couple things I do and suggest. Going to see a doctor about it might be something to consider, but if you're like me, you don't want to do that unless you feel you absolutely have to go. When my now 1yr old stopped needing middle of the night feedings, I just stopped going to her in the middle of the night when she cried. Now, she'll wake up, play in her crib for awhile, cry when she gets tired again, and fall asleep within 10mins or so. That's what I do with her unless she's sick. On the other hand, my 5yr old used to cause big problems going to bed and staying asleep. First thing, make sure they've gotten all their energy out. Let them go outside, run around, and play for awhile before dinner time. If they're not old enough to be alone outside then you take them out. Second, make sure they're full at dinner and try to keep the sugar/caffeine and such to a minimum all day, but especially in the evening. When they go to bed, keep up with giving them water, I do that now with my 5yr old. Another thing I've done for years now is noise. I keep a fan on in his room. A box fan, on the floor, not blowing at him, and only on at night. I turn that on when he goes to bed and that constant noise seems to have helped quite a bit. I even do it in the winter, but as I said, it's never blowing on him. There's one other suggestion I have. Since my 5yr old also has ADHD, he has a problem falling asleep so his doctor has given him this medication. It's not a sleeping medication, it helps him relax and calm down so falling asleep is easier for him. It also helps him to be able to stay asleep, but since it's not a sleeping medication there are still times when he does wake up. However, he is able to go right back to bed/sleep. I won't tell you the name of it here because I don't know if that's allowed or whatnot. If you would like to know or would like to talk more about this, email me at ____@____.com

do your kids nap late in the evening? if so they just might not be that tired. try having them nap earlier in the day. do they share a room? maybe they are jsut waking each other up? do you run to them as soon as they start to fuss. maybe you should wait and see if they fall back to sleep on their own. try giving them a warm bath b4 bed. the j&j calming wash and lotion worked wonders for me. my daughter is 5 months old and has been sleeping throught the night since she was about 2 months old...thank GOD!!! make sure to establish a good bed time routine...bath, jammies, storie, bed. and stick to it!!! the kids might rebell at 1st, but if you stick to it, they will grow acustomed to it and it will be much easier. If they do wake up, try to let them fall back asleep on their own. if they really through a fit go to them, soothe them and then leave them alone.
