Child with Acne?

My friend has a 5 year old daughter with little bumps on her cheeks and upper arms. They look like white heads. They aren't filled with liquid, but with something more solid. She's tried drinking more water, keeping her hair out of her face, and exfoliating. Has anyone else had this problem?

What can I do next?

I would find a dermotoligist if possible. I have fine bumps on my arms and I was told that they are Keratosis Pilaris. More or less they are due to dry skin. Im not one to self diagnose but here is a link to WebMD. They say it can go away with adolesence (Im an exception, lucky me)

It may be a virus type infection called moluscum or mollosk. I dont know how to spell ir. My son had it on his torso and the dr gave us a cream to put on it. He also said not to pop them because it will spread. Hope this helps.

My son is 3.5 years old and has these bumps on his upper arms as well. He has dry skin on his legs and if I don't cream his legs nightly (big tub no parfumes or anything in it, from the pharmacy) he will have excema like reactions (due to scratching) and so does his 8 year old brother. The reason I'm writing this because your friends daugther might have dry skin on other parts of her body as well. The Dr. told me when I asked about the bumps that it is caused by dry skin. he explained it to me but it did not make sense and so I forgot. But I did realize that when I do think to cream his arms as well the bumps are not so vivid.

Though I would never exfoliate a 5 year old child. For children it is best to leave the skin and hair be. If you are talking about a 5 year old child then once a week baths are plenty when they have dry skin issues. (On time I exfoliated my 8 year old son's lips with Satin Lips from MK and he told me that it hurt so badly. I can use the stuff daily--more than recommended. That showed me how sensitive kids skins are.

So shot: the younger the kids are the better it is to leave skin alone unless a Dr advises or prescribes. The cream I use on my boys legs is always prescribed by the Dr. though they have told me before that I could get the cream over the counter.

It sounds like something I had on my upper arms as a teen. It's probably not acne though... it just sort of looks like white heads and is yucky and bumpy. I lived with it for years before it seemed to go away. I found the following info on web md. Hope this is helpful!!

Keratosis Pilaris
Keratosis pilaris (commonly called KP) appears as "chicken skin bumps" on the skin. These bumps usually appear on the upper arms and thighs. They also can appear on the cheeks, back and buttocks. Keratosis pilaris, while unattractive, is harmless.

What Are the Symptoms of Keratosis Pilaris?
This disorder appears as small, rough bumps. The bumps are usually white or red, but do not itch or hurt. Keratosis pilaris is usually worse during the winter months or other times of low humidity when skin becomes dry. It also may worsen during pregnancy or after childbirth.

How Is Keratosis Pilaris Treated?
Although the condition may remain for years, it gradually disappears before age 30 in most cases. Treatment of keratosis pilaris is not medically necessary; but, individuals with this condition may want to seek treatment for cosmetic reasons.

The initial treatment of keratosis pilaris should be intensive moisturizing. A cream such as Acid Mantle, Vaseline or Complex 15 can be applied after bathing, and then re-applied several times a day. Other treatments may include:

Medicated creams containing urea (Carmol-20) or alpha-hydroxy acids (Aqua Glycolic, Lacticare) applied twice daily
Efforts to unplug pores by taking long, hot soaking tub baths and then rubbing the areas with a coarse washcloth or stiff brush

........
I would totally recommend using heavy moisturizers and switching to a soap free body wash like Olay. Soaps tend to dry out the skin more and make it worse. OH... and if you rub the spots too hard they just tend to get sort of scabby looking.... ewww.

Good luck!!

It sounds like exema. Try special moisturizers for it and see if it works. Best of luck.

I would have to agree with Krisit F. My daughter has this virus and it is very annoying. It can take up to 2 years to go away on its own. I highly suggest they take her to the DR and be sure that if they do pop them that they are taking out the "core" (which is the white inside) and disposing of it right away in a tissue. Make sure they are washing their hands as this is high contagious to Adults and other siblings. My son acquired it from my daughter. No baths at all because it can live in warm to hot water and no going to the pool. That is where my daughter got it from. You may want to do some research and check into the Yahoo group about it. I can spread all over the body so they might want to fight it now! If you need anymore info about it I would be happy to answer question about the treatment we are using. Just email me.

It is probably not acne. I have had these since I was a child. My daugter has them too. The unfortunate answer given to me by many dermatologists is there is no answer. Just something you have to live with. They don't hurt and you eventually forget you have them. The ones on her face will probably go away on their own as she gets older but the ones on her upper arms probably will not. Just tell her to try not to let her daughter pick at them because they will leave little red scars. They do come and go and usually look better in the summer when your arms are out in the sun more. Hope this helps...

It might be a rash, allergy, eczema or an infection. I would strongly suggest for your friend to take the little girl to the doctor. Do not pop, scrub or touch the areas as this could cause further irritation, infection or scarring! Please help her and go to the doctor!
