My oldest had to have the vaccine a couple of years ago and then another of my sons caught it from his being vaccinated. No one else did. Now my 4 yr old has had a fever off and on for a couple of days. He said his throat and tummy hurt yesterday, but today they are fine. He is not stuffy or congested. His tummy is fine and for the most part he acts fine, except when his fever comes back- then he is just "melted butter" you know, just on the couch and not feeling well. He has one spot on the top of his head that could be a chicken pox spot- or it could be a mosquito bite that he over scratched. It doesn't bother him and it is scabbed over. I didn't notice it until yesterday, but didn't think anything of it after he told me it was just a mosquito bite and that it didn't' itch anymore.
He doesn't have any more spots anywhere and he is not itchy. He could've been exposed to someone who had gotten their child the vaccine, but I don't recall anyone else that I know of who has had it.
There's nothing else that I can think of to explain the fever though and I know that there doesn't have to be a lot of spots for it to be chicken pox- what do you think? Is one spot enough?
I know there is nothing I can really do- just wait it out- but I am pregnant right now(5 months) and although I have had the chicken pox when I was little, do I need to be staying away?
Thanks!
~C.

This doesn't sound like chicken pox to me and I had it bad when I was a kid and then had both of my daughters vaccinated for it when they were toddlers. This does sound like a virus of some type. I say this because viruses have the lovely ability to ebb and tide each day and they morph into new synptoms just when you think the whole illness is about to take a turn for the better. If your son does not have a stuffy or runny nose, no ear ache, no sore throat or tummy pain.....than if this is a run of the mill virus, it needs to be gone very soon or you need to take him into the pediatrician and have him looked at. My rule of thumb is this...I will treat and watch a fever or illness symptoms for three days but if other things like ear pain, sore throat, vomiting, rashes, or anything else starts cropping up, we are off to the doctor. If the fever presists past 48-72 hours or it is high....we are off to the doctors. I'd rather make a visit and have it be nothing than let something mysterious linger. I'm not a "OMG" type of mom at all, but I'm cautious when it comes to illness of any kind. Sounds like a virus and because his fever is up and down, it sounds like it's on it's way out the door although if it were me, I'd be sure that this isn't strep throat. The fever, sore throat and belly pain are a bit suspicious. Best to have it ruled out so you don't get sick, mom.

Hi C.,

If you're on a really good prenatal and your immune system is working well AND you've already had a full blown case of the chicken pox, I doubt you would get them again. Usually the only people that get it a second time either had a very mild case or they are very sickly. Chicken pox traditionally will show the first spot on the midriff area, not the head. There could be many reasons he is running a fever....could be a low grade virus or the flu even.

Be cautious by keeping your immune system strong and washing your hands...it's amazing what soap and water can do to prevent illnesses.

Congratulations on your little one!

M.

check with your ped and OB. kids can get chickenpox when they are vaccinated. They just get a less severe version of it. It is possible that he got it from someone else that has chickenpox, not necessarily someone who just gave their kid the vaccine. The disease transmits before any "pox" show up, so you may never know who gives it to you. Now they are requiring 2 doses for children. A friend of mine who lives in NC got both her kids both doses of the vaccine and they both got chickenpox several months later as did most of the kids in the neighborhood, just not as severe as we did when we were kids.

My oldest got the vaccine and then got a mild case of the pox about a week before I was due with my little one. I agree you should talk to your doctor to ease your mind but there probably isn't much they can do if it is chicken pox and it shouldn't be that big of a deal to you. My doctor wasn't worried at all about me or or the baby (who by the way ended up getting it a month before she would have gotten the vaccine). That being said, it's probably something else going around right now so take care! It's hard being a sick mama taking care of sick kids . . . and preggo on top of that!!

I would probably take him to the doc and see what they say. My daughter had the vaccine for chicken pox, and it doesn't prevent them from getting the disease, it just lessens the affects of it.

My daughter got the shot I think at her 12 month appointment. She got chicken pox from daycare about 3 months later. She had maybe 50 spots and they only lasted a few days. I know (from experience) that a "normal" case of chicken pox can last over a week have hundreds to thousands of spots and be terrible. My daughter never seemed to itch, have a fever, or be bothered at all. Just like any disease it can affect everyone differently.

I would see what his doctor says.

I think the only way to find out what your son has is the doctor doing some lab tests. It's pretty hard to say what is going on with just and on and off fever. I would call your ob and see if you need to worry at your stage of pregnancy. I had chicken pox as a child and was exposed again as a teenager and have never gotten it a second time. Now most kids are vaccinated so it is hard to know if you are exposed much anymore anyway.

I doubt its chicken pox that starts on the trunk my son had a bug bite that got infected and his complaints were a tummy ache, "melted butter", and a scratched bug bite. Also he could have strep sore throat w/ tummy ache is common with strep in kids and would also cause the fever and fatigue even if he is not complaining right now. My oldest has strep several times and his only symptoms were a fever and fatigue.
