When you steam clean, instead of cleaners use straight white viniger. Put it in the container for the cleaner and then put the water like you are supposed to. It works great and carpets are safe from chemicals, clean, and soft.
I had posted a question earlier about getting my carpet cleaned before baby starts crawling.I got some replies telling it's not safe for babies and having corelation with kawasaki disease.Never heard of this disease before , but no I don't want to do anything that can harm my baby in any way!
But then my carpets are so damn dirty , if I don't clean them my baby will have no place to crawl! I am not leaving him on those dirty carpets:( I am looking into if just plain steam cleaning is an option for me , just to remove the dirt - no chemicals. I am wondering what you moms would have done in this situation? Looking for ways to clean it up so that it's safe for the baby... help me moms! TIA..

I have rented the rug doctor from weis or giant and used laundry soap in them. Cleans great!
Kawasaki disease is a heart condition, so I think you may be referring to coxsackie, which is bacterial. Either way, I think you may want to consider having your carpets steam-cleaned without the chemicals. Call various companies and explain the circumstances and ask.
Having said that, I would suggest putting large blankets down for the baby to play on. We did this with my son b/c I was concerned about cat hair on our area rugs and didn't want him playing on the wood floors. We had several large "comforter" size cotton blankets that we put down for him to crawl and play on. You can throw them in the laundry and put out a new one!
Steam clean!! I recommend a company called Zero Rez. They use no soaps, or solvents just water and steam. The carpet gets SO clean!
Never heard of carpet cleaning being bad. Are you certain this isn't just an Internet rumor? It really sounds like one to M..
So many carpet cleaning services use green products and technology now, it shouldn't be hard to find one who can help. We've always had our carpets cleaned right before our kids were learning to crawl. Maybe that explains why they developed three eyes, LOL! :)
I have never heard that carpet cleaning is dangerous to your health. I would think it's just the opposite, carpets hold a variety of dirt, grease, hair, dust mites etc. You should beable to use a carpet scrubber and get your carpets really clean then go over them again with vinegar water to remove most if not all residue from the carpets. Don't mix the vinegar with the detergents since vinegar kills the cleaning agents in the detergent.
Remember though a little dirt never hurt anyone. Kids who grow up in home that are too clean will develop allergies. The immune system has a purpose and fending off germs is it's purpose. Having a too clean home gives the immune systen nothing to do so it will start to fight typical allergens in your home causing allergies.
I was one of the cautious responders and I think steam cleaning is a great idea! Avoid the chemicals, even if they try and talk you into it and tell you they're safe - they're NOT!
I have steam cleaned.
It gets the grime out.
Have them steam cleaned w/o chemicals - just check the process and products the company uses. Perfectly safe : ) Good luck and enjoy the little guy/girl!!!
Your answers are across the board - with some knowing about the disease and others being confused - I think we all are. I do know, however - two children personally who've been diagnosed with kawasaki disease - and the only thing pointed at was the carpet cleanser. These children will be heart monitored for forever - if not by docs, then by their parents who are absolutely fearful of what damage has been done, etc. At any rate, hearing of a possible connection - we do not use any outside carpet cleaners, either - stay focused with only biodegradable products or vinegar as well. I hadn't heard of running vinegar thru a machine and will have to try that myself. Anyway - melaleuca does offer a 'recipe' (we do not sell the product, but do use it) -and other posters have commented on their knowledge of it. And when previously selling our home and needing to deep clean our carpet - we did go with a pro carpet clean - but kept our bodies up and off the floor - wore socks all the time, etc - and then DH re-cleaned the carpets with our own recipe - just hoped to remove some of the product.
Also - we don't take ANY shoes into the house. All stay outside the door in the garage. When we're dealing with cold weather and dripping wet shoes, we let them puddle out there - and bring them in to an indoor mat in the morning to warm. We eat only in the dining room and brush clothes off in the same area before wandering away. And have curbed the need for our children to wander around with ANY messy things - markers, etc. It's soooo hard to control all of the potential staining, messing things - - and we do by nature still have foot oils etc rubbing on carpets - however the bulk of grime stays under the table or at the door. I *LOVE* the blankets or sheets on the floor idea, too.
Good luck with your choices !
I think a lot of people responded steam cleaning, and yes that is my suggestion as well. Just remember that water is the universal solvent. You don't need chemicals. My husband runs a water conditioning service and his best friend runs a steam cleaning business. They always talk about this. I asked our friend what I should do when my kids (3 and 1) spill on my cream colored carpet, hot boiling water, then extract with a shop vac or carpet cleaner, chemicals can make the stain worse and can make it difficult for them (professional carpet cleaners) to get it later...
Good luck!
Yep, I agree with the vinegar (distilled white). I would dilute 50% with water though so minimize the smell, which will go away when the carpet dries. I used this all the time when I had dogs and it works like a charm. A lot of times carpets are dirty because of soap residue left behind from other cleanings. The vinegar will will remove that.
One best thing which is tried was rug doctor & we rented it from cub foods for $25 for one day & I cleaned all my carpets, rugs even upholstery by use rug doctor, very easy & effective way to clean,I am sorry but I have very bad experience with Bissell steam cleaner which I bought in 150$.
