Carpal Tunnel Syndrome During Pregnancy

Several years ago I experienced symptoms of carpal tunnel syndrome due to my job. And now I believe I'm experiencing it again. I'm 37 weeks pregnant and have such uncomfortable burning pain, tingling, numbness, weakness in my palms and fingers. The wrist pain itself isn't that bad. I believe the fluid retention during pregnancy is a trigger, but I'm not sure. Have you experienced this? Were you able to find relief? Thanks!

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Thank you so much for your suggestions. This has just flared up within the past month, so I'm hoping that after my baby is born, I'll get some relief, as many of you did. Thanks again for taking the time to respond.

I hate to say this however I did have carpel tunnel at the end of my pregnancy as well and nothing worked. I was told I would wear the wrist guards and ice it but nothing helped and it didnt go away until a couple months of having my son. I know this is no help but its the truth! Good luck!

Went away couple days after birth.
Hope that's the Case for you too.
I never did anything for it tho, justdelt with the numbness and tingling
But I'm sure other moms will be more help than I was

Yes, I had this up around 35 weeks pregnant until about 2 months after my child was born. It was so bad, I could barely dress myself or get out of bed, I couldn't hold/feed/bathe my baby without assistance. I cried every night it was so painful. I almost had the surgery done, but the swelling finally started to go down as my appointment neared. I was a hairstylist, so that may contribute to why I had it so bad as well. Wrist braces may help. There were a few things I did to ease the pain, but it was a few years ago so I can't remember everything.

I had it very bad with both of my pregnancies. It would keep me up at night and often I cried because it was so uncomfortable and I was so tired. I used ace bandages to wrap up both of my lower arms and hands and slept with them elevated as much as possible but it only helped a little. Unfortunately, waiting for your delivery is really the only relief...mine went away very quickly after I had the babies...hang in there, you're so close to relief :-)

I had the same thing happen. I woke up in pain much of the time because I would sleep on my hand unknowingly. I had to MAKE myself lay my hands very flat and with little to no bend in my wrist -- across my chest or stomach or along my sides. I almost got a brace, but decided to wait it out. I had a lot of swelling as well, and had heard from many moms that it was a common side effect. It went away shortly after the baby was born. Hopefully yours will do the same! Good luck and congratulations!

Yes, fluid retention is the cause. I got it too. The OB told me that it would go away after delivery and it never did. You can go to a massage therapist and tell me and they might be able to give you relief. I went after delivery but I guess you could try now if it is hurting too bad.

I had the same issue with my first and it got even worse with my second. I went to an occupational therapist with my first pregnancy and used some of their ideas with my second, as it was too difficult to make those extra appointments with the second. I read the previous posts and I did much the same: wrists braces, magnetic bracelets, different meds, massage, and exercises. The one thing that did relive the pain some what was to soak my elbow to fingers in super hot water then super cold ice water. You alternate it back and forth. I just set up a station in the kitchen and left it there to continue through the day, as I was off work much early than anticipated because of this problem. My pain was terrible and this is the only thing that gave me some relief. It did continue on after pregnancy but was mostly gone by three months after birth (my OB doctor thought I was going to have to correct the problem with surgery after my pregnancy!). Hang in there...only a few more weeks!

go to the chiropractor yes they can adjust you while pregnant and that is how I treated mine with no surgery.probably just a pinched nerve ps go buy a wrist brace that holds your hand backward

You'll need a nerve test to know if you really have CTS. I was SHOCKED how BAD they were and how BAD my left hand was. I thought my right hand was worse until I saw the tests results.

I had BOTH hands done and the surgery is NOTHING like it use to be.

I had my left hand done five months after my son was born. After I almost dropped him I pulled the trigger.

My doctor was SO good and did an awesome job. A year later I did the other hand and was even BETTER! The NICE thing is once you have the surgery there's INSTANT relief and it can't come back!

I WISH I had the surgery done earlier. It's nice to wake up and not have pain and curled up hands.

I had this in both of my pregnancy. My chiropractor was able to relieve the discomfort temporarily. But as soon as the baby was born each time, I was relieved of all the issues. Fluid retention is most likely the cause and a few days after delivery you will probably feel better. I did buy a wrist brace at the pharmacy to wear as much as I could and that helped too.

Good luck!

I have it and I am not pregnant. What I have to do is wear megnetic braclets. They actually work. When it is flaring badly I have to wear braces on my wrists. I will also ice them to help with the swelling and pain. For work I also don't type on a regulare key board I have an ergonomic key board that helps. If I use one that's not for a long period of time it gets' bad. Right now I would start with ice and if needed braces.

Hope that helps.

The only time I'd find relief from carpal tunnel while being pregnant was when I could manage to stop "double clicking the mouse". Sorry... I couldn't help myself.

You might have to "live with it" for the next few weeks. I know Ibuprofen is not a good thing to take while pg. Ice on for 20min. Give it a 10min rest. Put heat to it for 15min. Break for 10. Ice back on for 20.... and so on. That is the only thing I can think of.

Good luck!

I had it with my first pregnancy. I'm really hoping I don't get it this time around. It went away on it's own after I had my son.

Hi,

I used to have carpal tunnel like pain before my first pregnancy, during my two pregnancies and then after the pregnencies. Then, I found out I was gluten intolerant. Once I gave up gluten, I have not had any pain in my wrists. If for some reason I accidently eat gluten, the first place I feel it is in my wrists. Try getting off gluten for a week or more and see if you can tell a difference. You don't need it (nutritionally) for yourself or your baby. You'd be much better off eating more veggies or protein.

Hope this helps.
