I saw a thing on Pinterest about making caramel by boiling a can of sweetened condensed milk... I just happen to have a can in my cupboard, and some apples, and thought it might be awesome. Lol.
Has anyone tried it? Is there any chance the can could blow up or something? Lol.

What? Why are you asking if the can would blow up? You put it in a medium sauce pan. Who the heck uses a can????
Put it (just the milk stuff) into the pan on the stove and toss the can then add some brown sugar and some vanilla. Bring to a slow boil and let it bubble and simmer, stirring nonstop. It will look foamy.Never let the heat get so high that it overflows. Just simmer and stay with it, stirring and adjusting the heat for a while. It should be about 12-15 minutes. Then you're done.
When I was a kid, we had it boiled in the can but it is very dangerous.
It tastes awesome and is great on graham crackers.
BUT and I say BIG BUT..... our care giver would make it for us. One time while she was making it, the can did explode and she had severe burns on her face, neck and hands. Talk about a very frightening incident!
After that, we never, ever did it again.
I buy the premade caramel dip in the produce section or the caramel wraps for apples.
I've made it on the stove, but not in the can.
We make dulce de leche topping this way once or twice a year. The longer you boil it, the thicker and darker colored it will be. I have never had a can blow up but I did overcook one once. It wasn't burnt but just more fudge than caramel.
It's dulce de leche. Google it. I'm sure there are tons of tricks about how to make it safely.
Here's how you can do it in the microwave:

It makes a caramel sauce (you can control how thick it gets) which should be pretty tasty for dipping apple slices.
If it gets too thick you end up with soft chewy caramel:

Additional:
Don't cook it in the can.
For the microwave use a glass bowl (bigger than you think you need - it'll bubble up a bit) and cover it most of the way with plastic wrap.
Google the instructions first. I've heard several ways to do this and some are safer than others.
I saw you could put the condensed milk in a slow pot and cook it over night, I think on low as that would make the most since. I can't remember the detail but I'm sure the instructions are out there somewhere.
I've never done it though.
We have done it several times and it is so good! I always get scared with it boiling for so long, and you have to make sure the water level does not get low. It does take about 3 hours or a little longer. I tried another way I found online last time using the oven and it worked great. I don't remember exactly, but you could google how to do it. You put the milk in a pie pan, then into a larger pan that has water in it and cover and cook a certain amount of time. I tried the microwave method, but it did not work well for me at all as it got tough and grainy.
I used to do this for years. Boiled it in the can for 3 hours. The biggest thing is to let it cool down for a decent amount of time (maybe 30 minutes), otherwise it will explode.
