Car That Acommodates Three Car Seats? Help!

I'm expecting twins in March, 2009. I have a 2 year old now. We have to get a new car to accomodate all three car seats, but I'm wondering if big SUVs (ie pilot) or minivans are my only options. Does anyone out there have three car-seats in a non suv/minivan? What car? How is it working out?

What can I do next?

We are in the middle of buying an SUV currently. I have researched, polled, asked everything you can imagine. Mini vans are probably your best bet. I just couldn't do it yet. :) Guess i think I am 'too cool'. LOL Anyway, don't let people bully you into thinking badly about getting a larger size vehicle. If you have the need for the space than do it. We travel a lot with extra luggage and want to be in the safest vehicle when driving next to 18 wheelers on the interstate!

Most hybrids don't save you money until owned for about 6 years, they break down easily (like on the interstate for cracked windshields!), and cost a lot to fix with less people knowing how to actually repair.

As far as the gas prices, just take that into consideration. Try not to drive as often as normal, with 3 little kids you won't want to anyway :0)! Do things like only go to the store once a week not every day, drive with windows down more instead of air conditioning, gas up in the mornings, etc.

Blessings,
Amanda

Hi E.-

Congratulations on having twins! We have two kids right now but are expecting a third early next year so we traded in our sedan car (also have a mid-size SUV) for a Chrysler Pacifica. It has Captain's seats for the second row and a split folding bench seat for a third row. If you have one of the third row seats folded there is enough room for a stroller, or groceries, etc. We also have a car top carrier for any traveling we do for added room. We really love the car, it drives and handles really well. If you have any other questions, feel free to email me. Hope this helps! Take care and good luck with the rest of your pregnancy :)

With the size of car seat bases and convertible car seats, it is almost impossible to fit three comfortably in a sedan's back seat (same with a standard station wagon type vehicle). You definitely need a 7-8 passenger vehicle with that many very young children.

Minivans are so specifically designed for families and child car seats, it is really hard to go otherwise. We have three girls. I am not a huge fan of minivans, but I had to put safety and practicality first. In my opinion, having newborns and a 2 year old in anything but an 7-8 passenger vehicle would be compromising their safety.

Even if you got the largest sedan or standard wagon on the road, it's tight and the gas mileage may be poor. You could always check out the new crossover vehicles, but they may be in your suv category. My friend has a Hyundai Vera Cruz and loves it. Good luck!

I've heard that the radian car seats are more narrow, and it can be possible to fit 3 of those across a backseat. I heard this on another discussion board, and they were using the 3 carseats in a Mazda 3 hatchback.
