Car Seat That Converts to a Booster

My little boy is growing out of his carrier so I need to get some new car seats. I am looking to put my 3 year old in a car seat that converts to a booster since she is 36 lbs and will be ready for a booster in a year or so. Then I will give her convertible car seat that goes up to 40 lbs to the baby.

So any reccomendations on car seats that convert to boosters?

Thanks,
M.

So What Happened?

Thanks everyone for the suggestions it really helped. We ended up getting the Eddie Bauer High Back Booster/car seat. Our daughter liked it best and it was a good fit for our tall kid. I thought we would end up with the Britax but we didn't like it at all and either did our kid.

Thanks again

Hi! If you could give me some more information, I can do some research for you and give you some seat names. I know from what I've read the combo seats aren't always a cheaper way to go b/c most kids outgrow the car seat portion before they are old/big enough for the booster seat. You said you have a 3yo who is 36 lbs...is this weight with clothes on? Also, how tall is her torso (easiest to measure when she is sitting on her bottom against a wall or door jam and making a mark at the top of her head). Even though car seats go by height and weight, not all children's heights are equal (a child with really long legs and a short torso will be able to be in a seat longer than another child of the same height with a long torso and short legs). Also, what price range are you looking for? Sorry for all the questions, but I'm a big car seat advocate and would love for all children to be as safe as possible while in the car (the MOST dangerous place we put our children on a daily basis).

I went to Walmart to get mine it was around 40 dollars it's a forward facing carseat starting at 22 pounds then after 40 pounds you can take the straps off and use the seat belt built in the car, it's a highback booster seat with a limit of 80 or even 100 pounds,I belive it's Evenflo, anyway if you wanted to get a carseat with a booster seat I would check there they have alot to choose from and inexpensive ones too that work just as well as the pricey ones.Go online as well they will ship to store now.WSAHM of 2 kiddo's and want another girl

I've been wanting to respond to you for days now...We just bought a new car and I didn't want to lug car seats from one to another over and over...I went to the Target online and looked at the reviews. One in particular stood out in my mind b/c the mom made her kid sit in the seats at the store before she bought them (wonder why I didn't think of that???). Anyway, she was looking at the Britax b/c of the great ratings on it but ended up not getting it b/c the kid said it was horribly uncomfortable to sit in! Then I got to thinking...we tend to just look at the ratings for these things but not really ask our kids how they FEEL as opposed to what they just look like.

I ended up buying two Compass B510s b/c the mother said the kids said it was so comfortable (and we're getting ready to do a BIG driving vacation this summer). The kids absolutely love them and I let them pick their own colors on line. Best part is, they not only detach, but they also fold for flying and come with a carrying bag.

Another version I own in our other car is a Graco that has lights by the seat belts so if the kids want to read in the car or get scared of the dark they can turn the lights on. Both Compass and Graco will go up to around 100lbs on the kids.

Hope this helps...

After my son turned one I looked at A LOT of different ones, and my Grandma consulted the Buyer's Guide website they subscribe to etc, and found the Eddie Bauer Bryant Prospect Booster at Target was a good choice. It's $89.99, is forward facing, has a 5 point harness system, also will convert to a backless booster once the child is old enough. It received great ratings from Buyer's Guide as well! I'll admit there are a lot of negative reviews on the Target website, as well as good reviews. Most are about how hard it was to install in their cars, but I got it in my 92 dodge van with no problems! My son loved it right off the bat, it has to cup holders for his toys, snacks, and cup of course. But he loves it! Haven't had a problem with it yet, and he's now 2. It's worth checking out! Good Luck and hope you find one that suits you all best!

If you havent already done it - i would just say call up your closest BabiesRUs and ask the customer service people. I didnt even think they made convertible seats that go from convert to boosters..? But if they have them, those people will know which one is best. They're always up to date on the Consumer Reports listings, which one's safest, etc.. Good luck!

M.,

You should take a look at the new seat from Britax. It is called the Frontier. It is a harness seat up to 65 lbs. and then converts to a seat belt booster. I live in St. Joseph and I am the owner of Baby On The Go and we are taking pre-orders for them. They are due out in May. Feel free to take a look at them on our website at www.babyonthegostjoe.com.

Thanks, M. M

i personally like the one i got at walmart for like 80 bucks i think i am pretty sure its graco and has the shoulder strap adjuster that adjusts to his/her height. my son loves it. it has a head rest for comfort. he falls asleep all the time in it. and it has plenty of padding near the bottom of the back where the seat belt goes through the back when u are using it as a carseat with the straps. out off all the carseats i have gotten(i have 3 kids) this one is the one i plan to keep nice and save for the next one if i have one. or pass it on to someone else. it also has a cup holder which i dont use it is removable. my son usually drinks anything before we have a chance to need a holder. but i can tell u not all walmarts have the same carseats. i went to 3 different ones and only one had it. but it was worth it to go to so many. good luck.
