Does anyone out there know if we let our insurance company know about our car getting hit if we would have to pay a ded. Or if our premium will go up? Any info would be great, great help!!!!! Our car got hit while parked outside of our house. We were not in the car at the time (we think it happened over night.)

What can I do next?

You've waited a while to contact the police, they may wonder why and question that...

Good Luck,

Unless you have a deductible even if it's not your fault, the insurance company should cover it. That happened to me once and they covered the whole thing. I don't think my insurance went up. I had to file a police report and then report it to my insurance company.

S.,

You need to check your policy. If you have "Broad" insurance coverage then you will not have to pay a ded. because it was hit when you were not around. If you carry "Basic" coverage then you will have to pay the deductable. Insurance is usually cheaper if you went the "Basic" route. Hope this helps.

My car got hit in a similiar way and my ded was waved and there was no increase. We did call the police though to have it on file. The insurance company considered it a hit and run.

My husband works for Allstate and says no if you have broadform collision you do not have a ded. and your rates will not increase. However, if you have standard collision you will have a ded. but your rates will not increase. He suggested that you contact your insur. company to see what type of collision you have. Hope this helps.

I've actually had this situation happen TWICE. Once where we knew who hit our car and therefore did not have to pay the deductible and the other time we ended up paying the deductible. Either way you weren't at fault and your insurance shouldn't go up. Make a police report and file a claim with your insurance company otherwise you'll end up paying for the whole thing. Looking at the other responses it really depends on your coverage and insurance if they'll waive the deductible or not. Hope everything works out.

You don't know who hit it I'm assuming right?
I actually hit the neighbor's car when I backed out of our driveway (that was a bad day!) and my insurance covered their car. The ded. went up for my car insurance...

I'm not sure how it'd work if you didn't know who hit it.. I'd call your insurance agent first and find out and then claim it depending on your answer.

Before we were married, my husband's car got hit while it was parked on the street outside his home. He did not have to pay anything to get it fixed. It's considered a "hit and run". Several years ago, my car got hit while parked at work and sustained $3500 worth of damage. I didn't have to pay anything out of pocket to have it fixed. Neither my husband nor I had to file a police report (and no one suggested that we do so). I think it's a good idea to let your insurance company know. GOOD LUCK!!!

It's been a few years, but my car got hit in the parking lot at work (I watched the whole thing happen out my window...that was not fun!) But since it was parked we were not charged a ded. and it didn't raise our rates. I'm not sure though, it may depend on the insurance company. Sorry about your car, and good luck!

Hi S.:

Agent R. L here. Collision coverage would apply to this situation. If you have broad collision coverage, you will not be charged a ded as you were not primarily at fault for the damage. With standard collision you may have to pay the ded (check with your company) however, you may file a mini-tort to recoup up to $500. Check with your agent and read your policy regarding the specifics of what your policy entails.

I offer free insurance reviews to help you assess whether the coverage you currently has fits your needs. Check me out on this web-site business listings under "Finance/Insurance - Hunn Insurance."

Call the police and report it and call your insurance compmany and ask them. I think there is some provision for hit and run.
