Has anyone gotten their car's a/c recharged? If so, what was the approximate cost? Looking to get my car's A/C recharged and wanted to get some ballpark numbers. Thanks in advance!

So What Happened?

It ended up being $150, but it included an oil change and car wash. My car took approximately 1.41 lbs of freon, but he only charged me for 1 lb. Thanks for all of your responses!

I think it was about $80 but it depends on how many cans they use and if they find leaks that have to be fixed.

We have done it ourselves. Look in your owners manual for the type you need. Then get a kit at an auto place, buy the liuid and save a lot. My husband's cousin works in a shop and they charge $125. We did it on our van last summer and it only cost us $40, $15 for the kit, and about $8 a can. We used 3 cans I think. Very easy.

My car is in the shop for that right now. I was told it depends on how much they wind up putting in it, but worst case scenarios is $100. If you know anyone handy, you can buy cans of the recharge stuff (technically it's not freon, but I can't remember the name) and do it yourself around $35.

That will often depend on the age of the car....

Older cars may still have the genuine freon, and that stuff is EXPENSIVE!

Newer cars use a different refrigerant... and that can be done pretty simply and inexpensively.... if you are handy, and KNOW what kind of refrigerant your car uses, you can get a kit at the big box stores to charge it yourself... a pretty simple task.

Your best bet is to call your local garage and ask the question.

Around here? it's typically $50 per pound of freon/refrigerant is needed.

Hope that helps!

I paid $75 last year for it to be serviced!

Our van was $100 and then we decided to replace the AC unit after it started leaking worse. That was about $1000.

If there's no leaks, you can get a kit from AutoZone for I believe less than $50 and easily refill it yourself. Worked great for my old car. My DH's car had more issues and so it didn't work, but it was worth a try. Our vehicles were 10 yrs old.
