Can You Have 2 Pediatricians for One Child?

Kind of a strange question, so I'm not expecting a lot of response. Have any of you ever had two pediatricians for one child? I actually have two children and will have separate pediatricians for each of them (long story), but my question is... can I have my youngest see one pediatrician for vaccines and well checks, but see my older child's pediatrician when he is sick? The reason is that his current pediatrician allows us to do an alternative vaccination schedule, but I have to wait a really long time to see the doctor for sick visits and would prefer to take him to the closer, quicker pediatrician for colds, pink eye, and other common illnesses. I'm guessing it depends on the pediatrician, but I just thought I'd ask to see if any of you have had luck with this. Thanks.

DD,

Do the two pediatricians practice in the same office (are they part of a group practice)? If so, then there wouldn't be a problem seeing two different doctors since any of the doctors in that practicve will be able to see your child's chart.

If the two pediatricians are not in a group practice then I would suggest not seeing two different doctors since they won't be able to see all the notes/records on your child. Looking at your child's history is extremely important.

My famiy's pediatrician office has about six or so doctors. We see our main doctor for well-check visits and shots, and if our main doctor is not available when my children are sick, we see one of the other docs in the practice. We are comfortable with all of them so its not a problem.

Hope this helps!
K.

I am not sure what your reasoning would be for doing this, but I probably wouldn't recommend it if, like the previous poster said, the doctors are not in the same practice. It really is important for them to have all of the pertinent medical information about your child and if they are not in the same practice, they would not be sharing that information readily. I doubt that you would find a pediatrician who is willing to do this (if, in fact, you told them in advance of your plans). I don't think they like to share patients like that. Good luck to you!

We have our pediatrician for vaccines and regular check-ups, but we go to Goodnight Pediatrics in Stone Oak for all other visits. We love the doctors there who are wonderful with the kids, and they are very experienced and knowledgable. They have even referred us to specialist when needed. I wish they could be our primary doctor, but that is not their purpose. They are open from 3-11 Monday through Fridays and 11-11 on Saturday and Sunday. It is a walk-in office. This also provides you with a second opinion if it is ever needed. I highly recommend them.

D D,

We live on base, and I don't think that my kids have seen just one pediatrician since the time they were born. They do their checkups one place and there are two other places that I can take them when they are sick. Here is my advise, Absolutely do what is most convenient for you and your family, however... and this is a big however, you will need to keep a copy of each visit and records on you at all times. Think about it this way, one Dr on your normal visit will make notes and chart things and then do shots etc. however none of this information is transferred to the other doctor and vice verse. By keeping those records on hand, you are free to go wherever you need to go in order to have the best care for your children, and no matter what doctor your dealing with they can look at your child's history.

Good Luck,
R.
