Can Stress Really Make Your Period Late?

I was just wondering if stress really can make your period late. I have had stressful months in the past and have always been regular. I don't even feel like I am going to start any time soon, no cramps, not grumpy, nothing. So I was just wondering what your experience has been in the past with late periods out of no where?

What can I do next?

Yup.

So can not eating well.

It's the whole evolutionary "survival" thing for both stress and not eating well/ starvation (aka dieting). Also a reason why soooooo many women get preggers RIGHT after they've "given up". They relax, and their body becomes waaaaaay more fertile.

HOWEVER, another thing that can chang your schedule is living with, or working with an "alpha" female. Not as far as personality, but as far a pheramones. When a bunch of women live together, or work together, everyone's cycles get on the same schedule. Which is kind of a pain as far as everyone being grumpy at the same time.

Yes, the only times that I have had a "silent period" was when I was divorcing my first husband and was extremely stressed out.

Absolutely! Same with your diet and exercise or lack of...as well as the amount of sleep you get. Just about everything can affect how regular you are or aren't.

YES! This happened to me actually. It was the Summber before I started high school, I was in no way sexually active and always had 30 day regular periods for the past 3 years so when I didn't get my period the month I was supposed to start high school, my mom explained to me it was from being so stressed and I truly was. I thought about high school every day and night, had so much stress and worries over it so I ended up missing a period. I've been stressed many times as an adult and it hasn't happened again but I think since the stress was daily back then, that's what caused me to miss my period. Stress can do a lot to a persons body, try to relax and do some deep breathing exercises if you're feeling stressed.

Take care!

Yes. Any collage girl cramming for exams will tell you the same thing. Irregular rest and diet can throw your system off. Once the stress calms down and you are back to a regular routine, your system will relax and fall back to it's regular routine.

My husband and I have been trying for a second child since we lost our son to miscarriage in 97 and so far no luck. The stress of wanting to be pregnant and going to the doc for test can stall your cycle a week or more. I also have stress from job and other things so I say yes stress plays a big part.

absolutely. it can do all kinds of wierd things. make it lighter, make it heavier, late, early...you name it. mine also can be screwy a couple or few months after the stress has died down. not to mention your body changes as you age...i think if you've always had very regular periods you're very lucky. mine changed constantly. before i was on birth control that is.

It sure can. I read in Toni Weschler's Taking Charge of Your Fertility book about how stress can affect ovulation. She explained how sometimes if the body is experiencing a stressful event then the brain identifies that time period as one that is not ideal for ovulation. The ovulation can either be delayed or not happen at all. I didn't pay a whole lot of attention to it until I skipped ovulation (I was charting my basal body temperatures and cervical mucus) during my expected 'ovulation zone'. Sure enough, I was in the middle of some very stressful events in my life. My ovulation was delayed - didn't happen until day 41 - and ironically enough it was the month I conceived!

So yes, stress can alter your cycle.
