Can Chicken Pox Look like Flea Bites? Hives?

My dogs were kind enough to bring fleas into the house a couple of weeks ago. The day after Christmas they were flea-dipped and the house was completely fogged while we all left town for 4 days. When we got back- no signs of fleas. Friday my 5 year old woke up with many 'flea looking" bites all over her body. (about 30) This morning there are more! They are small red marks, some flat some slightly raised and of course they itch her. (none look like blisters at this point) I washed all bedding in the room yesterday- nobody else in the house has these marks and my oldest daughter shares a room with her and the beds are even pushed together and she has nothing on her. I checked for bed bugs- I dont see ANYTHING, no bugs, or traces. (That is even gross to think about- but I checked) Could this be chicken pox? No fever or sick like symptoms at all. Im going to wash again today and spray in her room and if it continues tomorrow we will be at the dr. Have you ever seen something like this? I would think that if it was in her room or bed my other daughter would have the same signs. Thanks for any insight you have.

OK- So now I am thinking hives although I have no experience with them. When the bumps first appear they are large and white like mosquito bites, then they quickly turn to the small red spots. Does that sound like hives? How do I figure out what is causing it? My oldest daughter just got up and there are absolutely no marks on her so I find it hard to believe these are bites. Thanks again!

What can I do next?

I would almost wonder if it is hives or maybe some kind of allergic reaction to the fogger.
If she still has them tomorrow, i would take her in. It might be something other than flea bites.

did the fogger specifically apply to the flea eggs? If not, then that may be what you're looking at.....eggs hatch, new fleas emerge. You have to be clear for 21 days before you can be considered flea-free. Prior & after the fogging, you have to vacuum the entire house - cracks, crevices, & all!

As for chicken pox, the vaccine does not prevent it 100%. You can still break out with the vaccine. & just as a heads-up, YOU CAN HAVE CHICKEN POX MULITPLE TIMES. My son is 14, & his last round was at age 13! 1st was at age 4, full-blown/fully-documented with the dr. The last was also fully-documented & diagnosed. We went into the dr thinking he had chigger or flea bites since he'd been fever & symptom-free.....nope!

Anyway, what we have learned is that our son's body is not maintaining his antibody levels. After this last round, we realized that we had "missed" two other rounds in the intervening years! Wow....we do believe that our son has had 4 rounds in 9 years! The recommendation now is to have him tested for antibodies, to consider/research the shingles vaccine (which is normally for older patients), & to have him tested for auto-immune issues. This opens a whole new can of worms.....& we're not ready to hit that road!

fleas tend to like one person over another. having said that fleas also have a 10 day incubating period. if it is chicken pox she should have a fever. she also should have knots behind her earss. no matter what it is give her a baking soda bath and no tylenol. lots of calamine.

Still sounds like fleas or bedbugs to me. Look at the railing under your box springs where the bugs like to hide. Could have been a flea or two having a buffet on your son as well. Pox would look blistery and the fever is usually right before the rash.... so he's either allergic to something or has been bitten again.... in my opinion.

Chicken pox do not look like flea bites.

There is usually a fever associated with the chicken pox. My suggestion would be to take her to urgent care to see what's wrong.

Bed Bugs usually only bite the legs, not all over and usually three bites in a pattern. The mattress will have dark red/maroon spots on it from blood. You won't actually see the bugs.

Get some oatmeal bath and soak her in that to help with the itching. Give her some benedryl to help with the scratching.

When one of my children got small red itchy marks we took her to the pediatrician. She told me they were hives or mosquito bites. I argued after a new "spot" showed up after the dr stepped out of the office, right on my child's tailbone! She took another look and said, good thing you called me, this is A-typical Chicken Pox.

I learned this is when a child gets chicken pox even tho they've received the vaccine. Similar to when someone gets the flu after getting a flu shot. It simply lessens the severity of the virus, it doesn't actually prevent it.

Based on your post, I'd still think it was fleas. But if not, consider chicken pox.

Even if your child has been vaccinated against Chicken Pox they can still get them. My daughter was vaccinated at 12 months and at 15 months she had a slight fever and about 50-60 little red bumps on her. I called the dr. and said that they were most likely chicken pox and wouldn't get any worse. They didn't need me to bring her in (which saved me the co-pay) becuase she wasn't uncomfortable and her fever stayed below 101.Also it is still contagious so they really don't want you to bring them into the office. The vaccine just lessens the chicken pox and shortens the time the have it, as well as how long they are contagious, but kids can still catch them. My daughter hardly had a fever and had just a few spots - the nurse on the phone told me that with a full blown case of CP she would have had over 1000 on her little body.

I would probably assume that they are flea bites, if your daughter has a slight allergic reaction they will look bigger than traditional flea bites. It would be quite a coincidence if she just happened to get chicken pox, while all this was going on. Google pictures of both things and see what it looks most like, give her an oatmeal bath either way it will help with the itching, and if it gets any worse call the dr. and tell them everything and see what they say.

You can google each of these and click on images. That should give you a pretty good idea of what you're dealing with until you can see a doctor.

She'd have a fever with chicken pox and their would be white inside the red.

Good luck.

If your child has been immunized she does not have chicken pox. They now have the vaccination for the chicken pox. As long as your child is up to date...she should have had it. (I thought my daughter had chicken pox but she had hives that looked similar to pox.)
