I have a 7 year old who is entering the third grade next year and I am looking for a great school in Detroit. I'm sure someone must know of an option for my daughter that I don't know about!! We have considered homeschooling but I am not sure if that is the best option for us.
Please let me know!!
thanks
Thank you so much for everyone's input. I really appreciate it. I am checking out Ambleside because I know a little about that school and I think that it sounds so amazing!! The kids really get individual needs met and my daughter really needs that attention. I love the mixed classroom atmosphere and the variety of the curriculum.
The Foreign Language school also sounds great but I think they are closed already so I cannot get in touch with anyone.
Thanks again!!!

I don't know exactly where you are in Detorit, but my daughter is going into the second grade and my son will be starting kidnegarten this September at Weston Prepatory Academy. They are located Berg and Chippewa. It's between 8 mile and 7 mile Rd. It's a free charter school with a great teaching facility. I know all of the elementary teachers and some of the high school teachers as well. As well as the principle. Very secure too! They do background checks on all the teachers and parents who are willing to help out. They are expanding on to the school to make it a k-12 grade school. This year they are adding 7th grade on and next year 8th grade will be added on. If you would like more details about the school feel free to email me. There is only a certain number of spots open, so don't wait to long if you are going to send her to Weston Prepatory Academy. Hope this helps you out!
Friends School in Detroit is located on St. Aubin off of Lafayette. I am a teacher here and I love it. I have recommended parents to this school and they have been pleased.
We are a Quaker school. We do not teach quakerism, but we teach its principles: nonviolence, love and acceptance of others, community building and giving and much more. Small classroom sizes, low tuition (compared to other private schools), financial aid and scholarships available.
Next open house is July 16, 9:00 - 11:30 am

Hello S.,
If you can't find a school there, depending on where you live in Detroit, you can have your children bussed to a school. My children go to West Village Acadamy. It is in Dearborn Heights. They go up to the 8th grade. It is an awesome school.
S.,
I have heard very good things about the Detroit Open School-it is a public school and I believe it is in northwest Detroit. They are supposed to have a very good Principal and they seem to do lots with the creative arts.
Best wishes, A.
Well there are a few schools in Detroit...it depends on where you are located and where you are. There is always Detroit Open School off of Lafayetta, Plymouth Educationaloff of Warren near 75. Then you have Cornertone Schools(many Campuses)..they provide scholarships my neice and nephew attend and out child will be going in the coming fall.
I hope this helps you in anyway.

There is a little K-8 school in southwest Detroit called Ambleside Community School.(www.amblesidecommunityschool.net)
It has small classes, an excellent curriculum, great teachers, a lot of individualized instruction, and tuition is on a sliding scale. It is really excellent. I taught there before I had children, and I will send my boys there when they are ready for Kindergarten.
Hi S.,
I would highly recommend DEPSA (Detroit Edison Public School Academy). This is my son's second year there and I transferred him there after a few years of paying for private school through Cornerstone. He began attending DEPSA in the 4th grade and entered with very poor grades and reading at the 2nd grade level. Within 4 months, his new teacher instilled a strong will to learn, a sense of confidence, and by January of the following year, he was reading above his grade level. DEPSA is the only charter school in Detroit to be awarded the Blue Ribbon of Excellence and their cirriculum is very demanding. They are committed to the success of each student, and require summer school when the children are not performing at expected levels. There are all kinds of activities for the children to become involved in as well.
Hi S.,
There are a good number of what I call gems in Detroit for schools. I would reccommend going to greatschools.net to search for what your preferences entail. But generally speaking my family is considering: Detroit Edison, Bates, Nataki Talibah Schoolhouse, University Prepatrory ( U Prep), FLICS Foreign Language Immersion School, and Pasteur Elementary has good scores as well. Burton International I told was a great school but when my husband and I went to visit, I was not impressed with the fact that the kids could look out the window and see the casino. I do not advocate the casino in my lifestyle, so that was really displeasing to me. School is almost out, but I would reccommend visiting the schools to see what best meets your expectations. Also the Skillman Foundation awards schools every year based on academic performance you could check the list to see if any of them interest you. Hope this helps.
I am a native Detroiter and my children attend Nataki Talibah Schoolhouse of Detroit (7 Mile/Lasher Area). It is a K-8 Charter School which was once Private. The school has been in existence for over 30 years. It is a gem in the city.....It has a true village atmosphere and is based on the premise that you are not just training students but raising Citizens. My eldest child is graduating this year and was accepted at Country Day, Cranbrook, Sacred Heart Academy, and Rennissance. She will be attending Rennissance and I know she will excel in part because of what she attained at Nataki.
I would like to recommend a good elementary school located at 23749 Elmira in Redford off of Plymouth. The name of the school is Academy of Detroit - West. The building is small and houses second thur sixth grade students. You can give the school a call at ###-###-####
Have you heard of FLICS? This is a very good public school. Also, my neice goes to Conerstone Schools Nevada Campus, this is a private school.
