i recently made a birthday cake for my daughter. i got a crazy idea in my head to make a 4 tier cake with decorations for her spongebob party. i have never done anything like that before but i realized that i had a lot of fun doing it and was even pleased with the results. i was wondering if anyone knew of any cake decorating classes? i haven't ever looked into it and i'm not sure where to begin. TIA!

to add to the other posters stores....

Don't forget JoAnn's Fabrics ..... Wilton Cake Supplies usually sends reps to the different craft stores to do classes. They're great. Have fun!

I am taking Wilton's class 1 at Hobby Lobby and it has been fun so far. They are 2hrs long and you get a lot of info out of it. Also a good website is Cake Central and I am also on cafemom and they have a group Cake 101 and they are very helpful.
Good Luck and Have fun!

The Wilton classes are very helpful in getting started, although sometimes I thought they were designed to sell supplies that I would not use again! You have to watch that with any class -- it is soooo easy to keep collecting the supplies.

Elizabeth's Cake Supplies in Euless has classes (although I have not taken one there) and they also rent pans, so if you want to do just one cake that's a special shape but you don't want to buy the pan, try them. They rent tiered pan sets too. And they have loads of other supplies.

I used to do a lot of cakes, and I got a lot of inspiration from cake shows and cake decorating clubs. One of the largest is ICES (the International Cake Exploration Society) but I'm sure there are others. They have "days of sharing" where you can get together with others who share this hobby, and learn so much from them.

Be sure to take pictures of everything you decorate, for future reference and so you can watch your skills improve. It's a great, easy way to learn from yourself, and since your creations get eaten it's the only thing you'll have afterwards.

One other thing -- the more you practice, the better you will be and the more fun you'll have with it. Once you figure out a favorite recipe for frosting, and exactly what consistency works best for you, then you can decorate ANYTHING! It's a lot of fun, as you have already discovered, and your friends, family and daughter will all be amazed at what you can create.

Cake decorating is a great hobby! Have fun --

I know Michael's and Hobby Lobby Craft Stores have classes. Also, some of the rec centers/Community Colleges have them. I am looking into them myself, as my kids are getting older, and I want to make their cakes.

Best wishes to you!

Cake Carousel (Carousel Cakes??) in Richardson has classes too. I have never taken them but noticed the sign about it on their door.

I have taken several cake classes at Cake Carousel in Richardson. The website is www.cakecarousel.com and a list of when the classes are is on the website as well. I recently took a class to learn how to make a castle cake, have take beginner and intermed. cake decorating and a chocolate class. The classes are a lot of fun. You do need a lot of supplies so it is good if there is someone taking the class that you can share with. I will probably take another class from them in the near future so send me an message if you have any questions. Cake decorating is so much fun and my 3 year old is so excited whenever we make a cake.
