Burnt Plastic Smell on NEW Jeans

Hi all,

My husband gave me a pair of black jeans from Express for my birthday. When I opened the gift box, there was no smell to them. Before I wore them, I wanted to wash them first. I turned them inside out, washed in cold on light. I then hung them to dry. Now, after I washed them they smell horribly like a burnt plastic/chemical type smell! Has anyone else experienced this? How do I get this smell out?? I thought I could "wear" the smell out but 30 seconds in the jeans I can't stand to smell myself!

Thanks!

What can I do next?

The smell burnt plastic smell you are talking about is most likely folraldehyde. It sad that China has to use these nasty chemicles to make clothing for us. Formaldehyde is suppose to be used for embalming the dead only so why must they do this.
Here's a link: http://dynamics.org/Altenberg/CURRENT_AFFAIRS/CHINA_PLASTIC/ or you could also try googling jeans smell like plastic, jeans smell like chemicles or off gassing jeans.
There's quite a bit that will come up with whatever you put in but all has to do with the chemicles they make the jeans with.

If it is Formaldehyde like the mother below said; I'd return them. You shouldn't have to wear them nor keep them if you don't want to even after they have been washed. I don't have any black jeans, I wonder if this is with ALL black jeans? Yikes!

Did you use a dryer sheet? Maybe throw them in the dryer on a light cycle with a dryer sheet? I'm not sure myself. I've never had this happen!

Good luck!
