Bumps in the Night

Hello Everyone,
My son is just turned one year old. I removed the bumper from his crib a few months ago because I feared he could suffocate/ get strangled by it. He is a very active sleeper. Since the bumper has been removed everyone in the house can hear his head bang against the railing as he shifts, toss, and turn. Is there anything safe I can do to prevent him from scrambling his brain? Any suggestions would be appreciated.

What can I do next?

Well, here is my suggestion... My daughter is the same, moves all over the place. I tied all the ties and pushed the bumpers half way down the sides of the matteress. She doesn't pull then up or climb out ( her crib I even leave the side half way down, she doesn't have any clue she can climb out) and I no longer hear her little head hit the back or sides of the crib. Good luck!

The bumper and any extra bedding are not suppossed to be in the crib from birth until at least age 1. Since he just turned one it is okay to now have it in there.

We use a fan at night to drowned out little noises. Since having kids I am a very light sleeper and the lightest sounds wake me up. We put the fan in the hallway and I usually run it on medium or high to help me sleep. Don't know if that will help you, but it is the only way I get a good nights sleep. M.

L., my son is around the same age and the is constantly rolling into the side bars of his crib. At first I was very concerned but it didn't take long to realize that it wasn't bothering him at all. Children at that age are very good at letting us know when they are uncomfortable or in pain. So my advice would be if it doesn't bother him just let him be.

My son rolls around like crazy in his crib. Since he is 1, I have left the bumper in. It is true that they can use that fabric to try and climb out, but luckily, my little one isn't to that stage yet. I would often come in to check on him only to find his head wedged in a corner or his whole body pressed into the bars of the crib. I soon learned that he didn't mind and as soon as he was uncomfortable, he moved. That's why he shuffles around a lot.
Unless he is really banging his head hard and waking up because of his discomfort, I'd say he's doing fine.

My pediatricians told me to take my boys bumpers out a soon as they could pull up - that it could be used to help them climb out. Is it bothering your little one? If not I wouldn't do anything - maybe use a fan like someone mentioned below to block out the noise if it bothers you.

We put the bumper back in. We were told that by this age, he was aware enough to move if he wasn't breathing well. So far so good! Good luck!
