Bug Bite Reactions!!!

So every summer my daughter seems to start off the season with a couple of odd bug bites then severe hives and trip or two to the doc and er then it is over. This year was not much different with the exception of the excessive bites. I just assumed all along that they are spider bites, although I never see a spider and the doctor has never identified exactly what they are. Needless to say, the bite will show up unexpectedly, shortly thereafter make a tiny blister like a bubble, the bubble usually pops within the first hour or two then she has a scab, it will ooze for about a day and then the swelling grows over the next couple of days. It is very alarming, the swelling usually gets to the size of a baseball and rather hard. Right now she has three on her arm that just showed up this afternoon and two on her jaw and cheek that showed up yesterday.

So here is my question, the docs don't have an answer and do not seem alarmed, the ER never seems alarmed and just call it an allergy to a bug bite. But I am alarmed! It is just odd that all 6 of us live here and she is the only one that gets these bites. It is also weird that she gets SO many. Just from this summer alone, she has at least 10 little scars just on one arm. My husband seems to think she is having a reaction to mosquitoes, which makes sense because we live in a wetland area with tons of mosquitoes.

What do you all think? Any suggestions for keeping these dumb bugs off her. I have even slept in her bed with her thinking it was in her room, and nothing. She will wake up with bites and I get nothing. I am highly allergic to deet which is the ingredient in most bug sprays and also allergic to lanolin which is also in a lot of other non-deet products, so I need something that won't get all over the house and cause me to go into and allergic shock.

Let me know your thoughts, experiences, etc. It's just a constant worry that each summer it seems to get worse and no one finds it odd but me. I wish I could post a photo of these bites, I am sure you all would think it alarming too.

Thanks in advance for your input.

I notice in the winter the "bed bugs" get me and sometimes my oldest. With my newest - she woke up one morning with a small rash on her cheek that grew to about dime size. Upon closer inspection I noticed two little blisters in toward the center of the rash-like swelling. The next day she got one on her arm - not so big and went away within a day. The one on her face took 2 weeks! That being said I realized it must be something in the bed and I also realized I haven't been using lavender oil like I do in the winter for the "bed bugs." So I washed all the sheets and blankets and I took a bottle of essential lavender oil and dotted up the mattress. It's been a month now and no more bites.

When I was little, I used to have SEVERE reactions (similar to what you are describing) to mosquito bites.

One of the best mosquito repellents I have found is to add more garlic to your diet. I was also taught that eating bananas will attract them! (I think it has something to do with the potassium or something...)

We got some free trials of a mosquito patch... It's deet and chemical free, according to the info. on it it adds a specific vitamin through your skin, which is supposed to repel them. I haven't tried them yet, and I want to do a bit more research on them before I try it on my daughter, but if it works as advertised it's worth a try!

Those clip-on off sprayer repellants work well, but only if you stay in one little area. I tried it for my DD, but she just moved around waaay too much for them to be effective.

I think you should read about bedbugs. They prefer certain people over others.

That sounds EXACTLY like what my 3 year old had last month!!! We took her to the ER because it freaked me out so badly, and we just told that it was likely a spider bite. It was on her ankle and she's a very slender child (bean pole comes to mind) and her ankle was SO swollen it was bigger than her calf! It went away after the blister popped and scabbed over - so about 3 or 4 days. Since then she's had some brutal mosquito bites. One on her forehead looked like she'd be clobbered with a baseball bat!

Some essential oils can repel bugs: tea tree oil, lavender, cedarwood, citronella, clove, rosemary, peppermint, eucalyptus. Also, Avon used to make a product (skin so soft, I think it was called) that worked like a CHARM...but I'm not sure if they still do.

Good luck finding a way to keep your kid bug-free!

I have heard (but never tried myself) that Bounce dryer sheets repel mosquitos. Someone said that they stick one in their kid's pocket and it helps. If so, maybe you could rub one on her sheets at night?

Swelling of a bug bite is an allergic reaction. You might ask your doctor about giving her an antihistamine such as Benedryl to help ease the discomfort.

My son has the same issue with the swelling then the small blister. We aren't allergic to the products you mentioned, but when he was small I didn't want to use them on him if i could help it (still don't, but this summer is brutal!). We used lavender oil on his bites to keep from itching and I made a spray using the oil and distilled water in a spray bottle. And lavender oil is safe to use directly on your skin, so you can place small amounts (like dotting perfume) on writs, neck, knees and such as needed. Just make sure you use pure essential oil. Good luck!

Get her to a homeopath and she will receive a remedy to protect her against the bites and the reaction to them.

My two younger children has this same problem, only I am positive that it is mosquitos. I just have to be sure to put plenty of repellent on them during the spring / summer.

OK, I'm the adult version of your daughter; I get eaten alive and not my husband, my kids are split so far. We don't have allergies, but prefer to stay away from harsh chemicals. So this last week I googled; home remedies for mosquitoes/fleas. I was pleasantly surprised with the information I found. I can plant certain herbs in the garden to repel mosquitoes and some other plants for fleas. I can take garlic supplement in addition to Vit. B to repel mosquitoes/fleas; from what I read it takes about a month from start of supplements. Our in a crunch rub garlic directly on my skin for instant repelling. I am presently using Avon's Skin So Soft oil in place of repellant. I remember years and years ago consumer reports tested it and it did better than most commercial insect repellants. Good luck with the rest of the summer.

I too as your daughter attract bugs and bug bites. I don't get hives but I get huge painful and itchy welts---to the point of having the head of a Farmer's Market ask if I needed herto call paramedics.

There is no solution but DEEP WOODS OFF spray really does help.
when bitten benedrayl spray, lotion and meds.
Also know that all bites and reaction commonly go away within 3-4, 5 days max!

I use to swell up like crazy from bug bites. Especially mosquitoes. It was horrible.
Thankfully, I don't anymore.
I'm surprised no medical provider has mentioned an antihistamine since this sounds like an allergic reaction and it could relieve her symptoms.
I'm not sure how old your child is, but when I was little and stayed with my grandpa in the summer, he rubbed Old Spice cologne on me. It's not as crazy as it sounds. The alcohol in it helped with the itching. And, I suppose I might have smelled stinky enough for the bugs to leave me alone.
:)
First check again with the pediatrician, but check health food stores.
My step father was severely allergic to certain bites like mosquitoes and fleas and he took garlic capsules. I guess it did something to change his scent or whatever and it really helped him.
Surely there is something that can help.
I know that many people swear by Avon's Skin-So-Soft as a repellant.
Rubbing alcohol and calomine can help with the itching on the surface, but it sounds like she needs an allergy medication.
I'm no doctor, but maybe a comination of prevention and itch relief will work.

I know it's not the same thing, but I was so deathly allergic to poison oak as a child that I didn't even have to touch it to break out. I had to go to the hospital and have a type of steroids every summer.
I haven't had poison oak in many years so it seems my body built up a tolerance.
I live where there's poison oak everywhere.
I'm sure you can find something that will help her allergies without triggering yours.

Best wishes.

Best wishes.

I know people keep mentioning Avon's product which works but here is a Bath and Body Works (I just prefer shopping in a store then online for scent products) product that works too. It's the fragrance spray Warm Vanilla Sugar. We live in a highly mosquito driven area and I just spray it on my kids and myself whenever we go to the park and it keeps the bugs away. It was recommended by my Pharmasist, and my husbands co worker (who is highly allergic and attractive to the mosquito's). Several people out here use it.
