Hi D.,
Guess who I am?? Bryce's mommy :-) What a funny surprise to see him as a question this morning!
To answer your question, it has been three very long months but we are praying that Bryce will be finally home on December 22nd. He has had a very difficult journey with his illness but he is doing pretty well. He spent 12 weeks at Childrens in Dallas and is now in inpatient rehab at Our Childrens House at Baylor in Dallas. So much has happened to our little boy that it would take all day long to sum it up here but I'll try to give you the quickie version. As you remember he went in to Children's in septic shock with MRSA. He spent 38 days in ICU, 21 of those on a ventilator and sedated. He was in renal failure as well as experiencing significant liver damage. He did 24 hour dialysis for three weeks and had 11 plasma exchange treatments that the doctors feel saved his life. We did come so close to losing him on Sept. 9th and 10th, the doctors called my husband and I into the consultation room to tell us on the 9th that he would be gone within an hour, that we needed to get our other two kids to the hospital quickly so we could all say goodbye together. Thank God, he did not die. So here we are today...I describe it like this...a major category five hurricane blew through my child's body and now it's gone but it has left behind some major damage. Bryce can no longer walk, he's just learning to sit up on his own again. He had massive skin damage from the sepsis on his right arm and hand and just last Thursday had to have a very large skin graft done. He lost his right thumb from the drug epinephrine that kept him alive those first ten days. He's got other significant scars on his body that are healing as well. But, we feel so blessed. For whatever reason, God has chosen to give our son more time...he's perfectely in tact neurologically which is a miracle considering the infection attacked every square inch of his body except his brain. He's still got what will probably be many months of rehabilitation ahead of him but he should completely recover - praise God. His doctors made it very clear to us when we were at Childrens that he is a miracle child. They had seen this a few times over the years but never had the child been as close to death as Bryce was and survived. We are so thankful this Christmas because we came so close to celebrating it without one of our kids. I've learned to never take for granted a healthy child, when it's taken away, it is devastating to your entire life. But again, God has sustained us and brought so many people in our lives to help us in so many ways while we have had to stay with Bryce. Thanks for asking about him, I wish I could attatch a pic so you could see what a fighter he is!
