"Browning", Not Bleeding for over 2 Weeks...

Last year (a month after an ovarian cyst burst), I began having 2 periods. One came on schedule and one came about 2 weeks before the regular cycle. The early one wouldn't be full-on bleeding, but what I call "browning" (you girls understand, right?). I watched and documented this for about six months and then decided to see my Gyno about it. After and axam, she basically said I was fine. I asked her about going back on the Depo-Provera shot to control the periods and she said it was worth trying. I've been on the Depo shot for about 7 months or so. Everything seemed fine until August. I've been "browning" for over 2 weeks and haven't stopped. Being on the Depo shot gives me no period, but now the "browning" came back.

Has anyone experienced this or have any suggestions? I must first tell you that I am on a new insurance plan that has a rider it saying they won't pay for anything related to "Menstruation Disorder" due to the problem from going to the Gyno before. I'm considering my hubby's group plan, but it is very expensive and that's why I went on my own plan. I accepted this plan just before I began "browning". MURPHY'S LAW, HUH!

Thanks in advance for all you great women out there!!

So What Happened?

I decided not to go to the doctor over this issue. I quit "browning" at exactly 3 weeks. Thanks for the advice and possibilities. As for the insurance, that's a losing battle. My husband's company is looking at other insurance companies, so we'll go from there.

Hi A.,
I have had a few ovarian cysts myself. Did they tell you what kind of cyst you had? For me last year, it was a large hemorrhagic cyst that ruptured and I "browned" for what seemed like forever afterwards. The doc told me it was just the contents of the cyst draining that I should recover completely in a few months.
Your cyst may be back. I would at least call the gyn back and explain your situation and see if he/she thinks you need to come back in. Did they do an ultrasound the first time? I wouldn't think that this would be a "menstruation disorder", esp if a cyst is suspected. I don't know how tight you are with the gyn, but maybe they could word it in a way to the insurance so that it is not the related prior disorder. I think it is extremely barbaric of your new insurance plan to not pay for this.

I went to the doctor this week for my 6 week postpartum check-up and asked him about all the birth control options available. He said that the depo shot has a lot of nasty side effects, with irregular bleeding being the main side effect. I don't think the risk of irregular bleeding is limited to a certain time frame, I would say it could occur at any point that you are on the shot. Also, my GYN's office has a nurse line where you can at least call and ask questions, I called there several times while I was pregant and it saved me a few office visits (if you have that same service available at your GYN's office.)

I had almost the exact same thing happen to me... I started "browning" almost 2 years into my depo shot... then I "browned" for almost a year after starting...

The doctor first thought that it was caused by stress, but when it didnt stop she started testing me for other things... I ended up being allergic to the shot. Over a period of time your body can develop allergies. This is one of the reasons why they recommend only being on the shot for 2 years then being off for a year. After the doctor switched me over to the YAZ pill the "browning" went away after about 2 months. That has now been about 3 years ago. Havent "browned" since :)

I would recommend that if you dont want to remember the pill every day to look into the arm inplant. I had it inserted about 8 weeks after my son was born. It last for 3 years or for whenever you want it removed... just in the case you decide you want more children...

Hope this helps! Good Luck!!
