Breastfeeding While Pregnant - Wheeling,IL

I was wondering if anyone has been nursing while pregnant? I am 8 wks pregnant, and have a 1 yr old son, who still nurses, but only before bedtime. I can tell that my milk production is getting lower, he is not getting as much as he would like. My doctor told me I needed to wean in order not to miscarry...how true is that? I also hear that they tend to wean themselves because the milk gets salty from the hormone change. Should I wean my son, or let him wean himself?

What can I do next?

Thank you all for your wonderful support. I had never heard of this either, and just wanted to make sure that I wasn't crazy. I am still nursing my son, and everything seems to be just fine!!! Thanks again!!!

Like the PP said, it is definitely not true that you will miscarry if you continue to breastfeed. Even if you had another issue, there is no reason to think breastfeeding would contribute to a miscarriage. I would ask your doctor why he said that as maybe he has some sort of other reasoning. He is doing his patients a disservice by giving out incorrect information.

You may find that pregnancy diminishes your milk supply due to the hormone shifts. Your son may chose to wean if he is not getting satisfied. The taste of your milk shouldn't be affected as pregnancy wouldn't change the composition. If he is only nursing at bedtime he may be perfectly content to continue. Hi,

My midwife told me there is no medical reason to wean during pregnancy (but maybe that is based on individual situations). Maybe you can talk to your doctor to find out on what studies/information s/he is basing this advice. In the meantime, here are some resources that may help you find the answers you are seeking.

P.S. This one is not directly related to your current concerns, but there is a wealth of information and resources.

E.:

as has been said by the previous posters it is NOT true that breastfeeding while pregnant will cause you to miscarry.

the theory is that the release of oxytocin while breastfeeding will cause contractions - the reality is that there is not enough oxytocin realeased to cause contractions.

there are a number of excellent books on weaning that might be worth looking at ... I might start with mothering your nursing toddler.

As with the other posts, unless there is a medical issue, breastfeeding while pregnant is perfectly okay. I did it until I was 4 months pregnant, and then I decided that I had enough. (My son was 19 months old). My midwife supported my decisions - and all of the information I could find said it was fine. It was true that my milk supply diminished slightly - you will need to add a few calories for both milk production and being pregnant.
