Breastfeeding During Pregnancy

My son turned 1 year old on April 5th and I had no plans to completely wean him any time soon but, we just found out that I am about 7 weeks pregnant. I'm going back and fourth with the idea of weaning my son because I know that risks can be involved with breastfeeding during pregnancy but I also know many women have successfully breastfeed through pregnancy and continued to tandem nurse after the birth of the baby. We were able to make it through the day yesterday with cups and I didn't feel as dehydrated as the previous days but not nursing at night was out of the question. My son usually nurses to sleep and sleeps through the night, last night he finally feel asleep with a sippy cup but woke up within and hour and cried hysterically until I gave in and nurse, he then woke up a couple hours later again and I had to nurse. I guess I'm just looking for others experiences. I would love to continue to breastfeed but if i feel as dehydrated as I have I don't think it is a good idea. I'm thinking about just cutting out daytime feeding and keep nursing once at night until he gives it up.

What can I do next?

Hi! J.:
My son will be 13 months on Tues., 4/24, I am 6-1/2 months pregnant, and went through the same thing you are. I researched this online and spoke with my doctor. From what I have read, it is safe unless you have a history of miscarriages. My doctor told me that the milk will dry up on its own and he would wean himself. This is true, although I will still nurse him if he wakes up in the middle of the night. So far, so good.
Good luck to you!

So, you are due very soon. What did you do and how did it turn out? I have a 14 month old and I'm thinking of getting pregnant. I would like to nurse her (just going to bed, nights and once in the morning) until she is 2 or 3. But I'm concerned about how that would work during pregnancy and after.

I breatfed my daughter up until i was 6 months pregnant, It is safe, But your child may not want to nurse after a while because the hormones change the taste of your milk, and you may want a few months to teach your child that now it's the new baby's turn

Mandy, my kids are 15 months apart , daughter 8/04 son 12/05

Hi J.,

I breastfed mt first until I was about twenty weeks pregnant. While most websites said I would be able to nurse the whole time, my OB said that by about 20 weeks, milk starts drying up to the point that most little ones will self-wean. And, that is exactly what my daughter did!

I mostly only nursed her right before bed. It helped when I weaned for my husband to put her to bed for awhile, if that is possible for you.

Also, my OB said to try to drink 64 oz of fluids but also eat a lot of fruit because it will help hydrate. I was very sick when pregnant with my second - so fruit and fluid was practically all I could eat (and about 3 or 4 bowls of cereal a day!!)

GOOD LUCK!
