So What Happened?

thanks again everyone...I just thought that my current "nurser" would drink up the colostrum and there would be none for new baby.

K.,
Your new baby will absolutely have enough colostrum. Your body begins the change over at around 4-5 months during the pregnancy. This is automatic based on the pregnancy itself and is not affected by the nursing of your toddler. Some women find that their nursing children will naturally wean during this time because of the change in the milk, or the amount produced.

Here's a great page that answers your question very well. http://www.babycentre.co.uk/baby/breastfeeding/breastfeed...

Oh yes, the colostrum will be there. And I avoided sore nipples and engorgement by nursing my ds3 during the pg and after the birth of his sister. Those two are the closest buddies of my four kids. I swear it's because they were nursemates :)

Your body produces the colostrum automatically. This is the precursor to breast milk, which takes about 2-3 days to come in. Smile and enjoy your baby!!

That I am not sure of. I don't know if it would come in even though your were or what would happen. I would think it would still come in since your body can sense you had the baby, but if you find out from a doctor let me know cause I am thinkin' maybe even with BC I may be preggers!.

i breastfed my daughter throughout my pregnancy and after the birth of my son. Your body knows how much milk to make and when. Its natural. As long as their are no complications breastfeeding during pregnancy is allowed. If your doctor or nurse says no then i would question why? if possible call a lactation consultant. La leche Leaque could help you get in touch with someone in your area. Good luck,.

at about 20wks your milk will turn to colostrum. your baby can continue to nurse while you have colostrum however, s/he may not be as satisfied because he will not be able to get the amount of volume in the same amount of time. some babies will wean themselves during your pregnancy when the colostrum comes in. you will continue to produce colostrum until 2-5 days after you give birth.

are you planning to tandemn nurse?

You body knows what your baby/babies need at every stage. Breastmilk is ever changing and is best suited to your baby. The colostrum will be there.

I breast fed while pregnant for several months upon the advice of my childrens peditrician and with my OBGYN being aware of it... but I after I got to be around 7 months or so the OBGYN began to talk with me about if it was not 100% neccessary to continue that it was time to think aboout weaning... he stated that I should think about the fact that not only was the child breastfeeding sharing "resources" and nutrients, but the baby in side of me is having to share and there is no way to be sure that both are receving adequate nutrition in the situation after an extended period of time... hope this helps M.

Your body automatically starts switching to colostrum during the pregnancy. I'm also pregnant and breastfeeding. Your breastmilk will change to the needs of your youngest child. Pretty cool, huh? Because of this, sometimes your older child will stop nursing because the milk tastes differently.

Your body automatically produces colostrum first. It takes about a week for your "milk" to come in. No worries! You WILL produce enough to feed your baby. The more you nurse, the more your body produces. If you nurse less, your body produces less. Once you start suplimenting with formula you can't turn back. Your baby knows the difference. I nursed all 4 of my kids. The twins were a real challenge. I literally nursed 24-7! It was worth every single sleepless night. Let your body do what it supposed to do--don't give up whatever you do. GOOD LUCK!!
