My husband and I want to start trying for our 2nd child within the next month or so, but I am still breastfeeding my son of 8 months and would like to do so as long as possible. I am going off of the pill the first of June, but was wondering if I could get pregnant while breastfeeding. I have a dr. appt. for late June, just to make sure everything is a "go" but would like to know if any of you had any suggestions about the subject. We got pregnant with our son the first month we started trying, but think the breastfeeding may make it harder to concieve. Then I was wondering if I could breastfeed while pregnant. Is there anything I can take that might help with fertility while breastfeeding? Thank you for your suggestions/comments. They are greatly appreciated!!

What can I do next?

Hi K.,

I know for a fact you can definitely get pregnant while breastfeeding, and you can definitely breastfeed while pregnant. Our third child, our unplanned pregnancy, happened right around my second child's first birthday, I breastfed all three of my children until they were about fifteen months, and during the first two I thought because I didn't have a period I wouldn't get pregnant, but that was definitely not true. Needless to say, my husband had a vasectomy within days after our third. I don't know how hard it's supposed to be, but that was our only slip up, and oops, lol, but it's great, it took me not planning, and not knowing to finally have my girl. But good luck, and I sincerely hope everything works out for you. Take care.

Yes it is possible.

Have you heard of Irish Twins? Meaning 2 babies born within 12 months of eachother. It happens.

Good Luck

You can most definetely get pregnant while breastfeeding, as long as you have a period. My husband did not believe me because his grandmother told him that you could not. My daughter, now 9 months, begs to differ. I continued breastfeeding for the first two months of my pregnancy, but it was making me nauseaus (sp). I had gestational diabetes, so low blood sugar was an issue. If I could not eat prior to nursing, I would sit there getting very queasy. My OB and pediatrician both said breastfeeding is fine during the 1st and 2nd trimester, but not the 3rd.
I don't think fertility drugs are safe while breastfeeding, your ob would be able to advise you. Seeing you conceived the first month, you obviously are fertile. Recent pregnancies and breastfeeding makes you more fertile :P

I am certain you can get pregnant while breast feeding, but you have several other issues you are trying to deal with. I would suggest that you contact someone from the LaLeche League. There is a group that meets in Brandon at St Andrew's United Mehodist church. I know the leader and they are a terrific group with tons of breastfeeding knowledge!

Hi -
I got pregnant with my second child while I was still nursing my 9 month old son. As long as youre having a monthly cycle you can still get pregnant. I continued nursing my first born until my 8th month of pregnancy and never encountered any problems. However I have heard that your milk begins to taste different once you get pregnant and I did notice that my son could tell a difference as well. If I had to do it again I probably would only nurse for the first few months while pregnant. I feel like it took a big toll on my body trying to produce milk and maintain a healthy pregnancy. Good Luck!

It is possible and happens all the time. I have a good friend who has daughters that are a year and 1 week apart in age. And you are also able to continue nursing while pregnant as long as you follow your doctor's advice and consume enough healthy calories.

Good luck.

HI K.,
That's great that you want to continue nursing. You can get pregnant while nursing, but it may be more difficult. (ask your doctor) I nursed my kids until they were 3 1/2 (which would shock a lot of people, probably) but at that age it was just a little at bedtime for comfort - you know, and it was very nurturing.
Good luck!
