I got my first period after a 13 months of breastfeeding and it seems my LO has started to drink a little more BM. Is it possible for my periods to go away again or might they just be irregular?

What can I do next?

Menstrual cycles may be highly irregular while breastfeeding. However, some people have a predictable cycle while breastfeeding. Your breastmilk may taste slightly different during stages of your cycle, but most babies adapt without problems. Breastmilk is as healthy as ever for babies regardless of whether Mom is menstruating or not. Congrats on giving your baby the ultimate food her first year. Midwife Mom of 3

You may get it one month and then not again for another 2. It's very unpredictable, especially if your LO has a growth spurt and drinks more milk because the hormone that is excreted in your body when you are nursing also inhibits your menstrual cycle. So the more you nurse, the less likely you are to have your cycle. I doubt it would go away indefinitely unless your LO goes back to nursing full time.

There's really no absolutely positive all the time correlation between breastfeeding and your period. Trust me -- my youngest 2 are less than 14 months apart for this very reason! I ovulated even though I was breastfeeding; my period never came back because I got pregnant that one time we weren't totally careful!

Your menstrual cycle can be a little off as your body adjusts post pregnancy -- but don't ever count on breastfeeding as birth control!

Your periods can never be guaranteed to stay away during breastfeeding. My periods returned right away after delivery. What I mean is after my post-partum bleeding ended, my menstrual cycle started per usual 5 weeks later every single time when I was exclusively breastfeeding.

Never, ever use it as birth control. Never rely on it to give you regular periods.

They can vary. I didn't get my period for about a year and a half of nursing. My daughter is 2 now so I may get it one month and then not again for two months but I'm also in the processing weaning her so I think that is going to make me even more irregular:(

I was in that boat, too - mine came back irregularly for quite awhile...never went away completely, but was a year or so before I could reasonable predict the cycle.
