I am trying to transition my 10 month old off baby food into real food. I just can't figure out anything to give him for breakfast. I've given him oatmeal, fruit and yogurt. Any thing else anyone can think of? I can't make him pancakes every day and I know he can't eat eggs yet...help!!

What can I do next?

You can give him pancakes every day. They make them in the freezer section just like Eggo waffles, the same with french toast too. Also what about mini muffins. My son likes the blueberry ones.

Yeah, breakfast food are kinda limited. I would branch out into lunch & dinner foods. Rice, beans, mashed potatoes, diced chicken, noodles, toast, avocados, cheese, cottage cheese. Plus, I haven't heard about holding off on eggs...he could at least have the yolks, couldn't he?

I am having the same exact problem -- I haven't tried Farina yet but I have given him scrabled eggs -- he is not allergic. I have 2 other boys so I have given him the Eggo mini pancakes and french toaster sticks not the healthiest but I have 3 boys.

I would love other suggestions from other moms too. My other 2 were very picky eaters and this one will try anything.

Although he still loves the jar foods (Stage 3).

Good Luck.

Hey D.,
My daughter absolutely loves waffles and french toast sticks....I either stick them in the toaster for a few minutes or put them in the microwave for a few seconds...Its easy and doesnt require as much prep as pancakes....Have you tried farina? If your son likes oatmeal Im sure he would like that also...My daughter was very picky so I was extremely limited on what she would eat...cereal is also great but Im not sure if you are giving him milk yet...Hope this helps!!

My daughter is just about 10 months old and has given up on baby food. Breakfast has been the hardest meal for me. I give her pancakes (microwave ones are great), oatmeal, yogurt, toast and cheerios. I always give her some sort of fruit with breakfast also. My pediatrician told me that I can start giving her eggs, but to start with the yolk first. My older children have an allergy to eggs, so I am holding off. If I were you I would just use your best judgement. Anything that he can chew and swallow would be good. My daughter only has 3 teeth and she can eat just about anything. My biggest breakfast "rule" is to try to get a grain and a fruit in her. It seems to work and my daughter is happy. Good Luck!!

that's pretty much what i've been feeding my son since he's been that age - and he's 18 mos. old now! only suggestion i have is to make pancakes ahead and freeze them. i also do nutra-grain frozen waffles - they have cinnamon & blueberry & i toast them and break them into pieces and we "dip" them into stage-two gerber fruit like apple-blueberry. i also use strawberry cream cheese on almost everything - whole wheat bread, bagels & english muffins, waffles & pancakes. good luck!

Hi D.,
Our daughter Ava is almost 11 months, but at her 9 month well baby visit, the dr. said we could introduce egg yolks, not the white part. I just scrambled the yellow with a little milk and she LOVES them. Today was the first day she got the white part, I made french toast...she loved that too.

She loves fruit too; raspberries, blackberries, strawberries, blueberries, prickly pears, avacado, mango - anything and everything. I have always allowed my kids to try everything, and they're still adventurous now at 5 and 3 1/2, usually kids are picky at those ages.

Other things I give her at breakfast are Cheerios, pancakes, mandarin oranges...I try to give her nothing out of a can, only fresh fruits.

Mealtimes can become boring, but a huge variety definitely takes care of the "this again?" factor!

HTH,
J.

You can make one batch of pancakes and freeze them, so each day you can pop one in the toaster. This also works well with french toast! Also, try mashing different fruits into his oatmeal each day (apple sauce, pureed pears or peaches, bananas, blueberries) for a little change.

If you're making him pancakes then he's already eating eggs without apparent difficulty. If you're really concerned about egg allergies, get a high quality organic/omega-3 egg, seaprate it, and scramble the yolk with some milk or water. My kids like stir-fried zucchini with breakfast (well, two of them like it, the third just tolerates it, but he eats it!). You could mix this with some cheese like parmesan for some protein. I would avoid white flour at this point. Whole wheat or spelt are much better, complex carbohydrates, that actually have some nutritional value - not just useless carbohydrate bulk. Now is the time to instill healthy eating habits, and pancakes, waffles, and french toast (unless it's homemade french toast, with whole grain sprouted bread, good eggs, and pure maple syrup with no added corn syrup) are just not good breakfast habits for a lifetime. Personally, I just added eggs over a week or more and watched for any allergic reactions - mine were always desperate for a bite of Mommy's breakfast, so we let them try.

Hello D.,

Your baby can definitely have eggs, just not the whites. I also give my girls small pieces of toast with cashew nut butter or almond butter for protein, or sometimes drizzle some olive oil. It's also a great way for him to gain dexterity with his hands.

I've gotten some wheat free organic waffles and cut them up into little pieces. We love banana muffins and make them quite a bit...Earth's Best (organic) makes some cereal bars that are also a big hit - usually we stick to bluberry or cherry. A friend of mine cuts up bagels and toast for her daughter. I guess it just depends on how adventurous you feel like getting. FYI- we've tried eggs. I've read so many mixed things about this, but my pediatrician gave us the heads up. Anyways, good luck!

You indicated that you couldn't make him pancakes everyday..aside from not wanting to have the same meal day after day...I was wondering if some of the problem is time in the morning. As a working Mom I couldn't find the time to make such a breakfast during the week. However, if you are making/serving pancakes or even French Toast on a day off, make up some extras and freeze them for a quick, yet yummy, breakfast on those busy work days.

yes, he can eat eggs. my baby has been eating eggs since five months - but do NOT give the egg whites, just the egg yolks. The egg whites are allergenic and shouldnt be given until at least 18 months (all the baby books say this). I was given egg yolks too when I was a baby and loved them. He will too. I put a little bit of formula (or if you are still breatfeeding, breast milk) with the egg yolk to make it a mushier consitency and a little water and it is great. He eats them for breakfast and lunch. I usually use two hard boiled egg yolks (always thoroughly cooked to avoid salmonella). Have fun!

Hi D., you can scramble the yolk (since hard boiled are hard for babies) or crush the yolk after hardboiled and crush it in the oatmeal, yogurt, cheese, fresh fruit, cereal/granola bars (gerber makes good ones for babies), grill cheese, cottage cheese - you can always try cold cereals like cheerios - if the baby likes to drink his formula you can try to give him cheerioes with a little room temp formula ...good luck

"breakfast food" isn't written in stone.

Try any combination of protein, carbs, and fat. Try soups (watch out for sodium), bits of chicken or lean beef, veggies, whole wheat toast. The eggs can come later.

Cheerios seem to be everywhere. Good for finger food any time of day

Hi D., you've got a lot of advices. In 10 months and still now,my daughter liked to eat cottage cheese. She also eats soft cheese like brie/camembert with some whole grain bread. We both like whole grain muesli/cereals mixed with drinking yogurt. Lately i started to add to this mixture different fruits, like apple, pear, orange, kiwi. Veeery tasty and healthy. Sometimes we cook porridge with raisins (on milk base). ohh... almost forgot, usually we start morning with croissant for my daughter and coffee for me :) Important to enjoy breakfast and it's preparation together;) Good luck,O. and Liat-Valerie (15 months already!)

D.,
My daughter just turned 11mos. If you hard boil the eggs, you can give him the yolk from the middle. Some do give the white, too, but I think you're supposed to wait till one for that because it's a high allergen. My daughter likes the yolk in little bits with drinks of water in between. You can also mix some into another food like his cereal.
If you want more input, check out Super Baby Foods from the library. She does her own cereal and mixes all kinds of things in it. She' also covers what foods they can have at what ages. Hope that helps you.

It is the egg whites that have allergens and is not recommended until after 1 year. So go ahead and make him scrambled eggs with just the yolk & a nice piece of toast. How about cheerios? There are great frozen pancakes & waffles you could buy also. My favorite are the nutragrain/whole wheat eggo waffles. Spread a little jelly on it, cut up into bite sized peices.

I see you already have lots of ideas from other moms, but I just wanted to add that I made my daughter egg yolk omlets and I ate the whites:-) I added spinach, broc, cheese, veggie crumbles(Morning Star), peppers, onions and mushrooms. These refrigerate and freeze well! Also when I make pancakes I add in Gerber fruit and veggie purees:-)

Hi- I also have a 10 month old son born June 4, 2007 he is my third son. SOmetimes we do breakfast bars, the gerber ones are good or even whatever ones are on sale. Sometimes I also cut up fruit for the whole day for all 3 boys and that can be breakfast(and snacks throughout the day if there is enough)We do alot of pancakes & waffles the older 2 could eat them 24/7. I have been a little slower with introducing my youngest to foods then I was with older 2 boys( strange I know it's usually opposite with 3rd child)but he has bad reflux so I hesitate. We do oatmeal and grits (made with water) and so far that is really it. But the breakfast bars are definitely my best suggestion because they are good for on the go to bring with you or to have along for a snack too. I can't wait to start eggs, to give a little variety. Good luck!!

I havent read any other responses but cheerios are good or other easy to chew cereal. i am also a fan of cheerios and yogurt. fruit is good bananas and stuff coodon its own or with oatmeal. Remember its dont get board with food as easily as adults most babies and young children dont need a ton of variety esspesially with breakfast. you can give him either just the egg yolk or just the white ( i can never remeber which so look that up) my son is 3 now and still eats 1 of maybe 3 things in the morning. as for lunch and dinner almost anything goes people always comment on what a good eater he is. So in conclusion dont worry about it to much just keep breakfast simple!

try egg yolks - you can give an infant under 1 year those. also, try cheerios or bran flakes mixed with either breast milk or formula. there's also always a hash you can make on your own, with potatoes and maybe some sort of ground meat, like beef or turkey. i gave all these to my now 16-month-old daughter before she was 1 year and she loved them. good luck!

If he is eating pancakes with no problems he can eat french toast and waffles. I use the frozen mini waffles from eggo and the plain french toast sticks. Also if him will eat jar food still there is no reason to rush into table food. I though it was so cute when my son started to eat table food that I gave it to him all the time now he will not take jar food and it is much harder when we are out.

My daughter loved (and still does love) scrambled eggs. My pediatrician said that yolks are fine until 1 year of age when they can have the whites as well. She even said the occasional egg white was ok before 1 year... I think I started with scrambled egg yolk at about 9 mos, and occasionally gave her the whole egg, and she was fine. You also might just try some whole wheat toast cut into little pieces... of course cheerios are a good finger food....

Hi D.. You could try cereal such as cheerios, waffles, french toast, pancakes, bagels, whole wheat bagels, grilled cheese sandwich cut into bite sized bits. And remember that at this age, it's probably comforting to him to eat familiar foods and alternating between just 2 or 3 breakfasts is really enough, he doesn't need to eat something different each day of the week :)

Unless he has an egg allergy (I am assuming he doesn't since he eats pancakes) you can give him eggs! Scrabled eggs are a great breakfast, even add some cheese for extra protein and calcium. You can give him rasin toast, cut up into tiny squares -- the same can be done with french toast and waffles. And who says you have to stick with typical breakfast foods?!
