Has anyone taken their child to Brain Balance for help? We went to there open house tonight, but it sounds too good to be true. Our son currently does OT and neuro-feedback therapy. The insurance will stop paying for the OT on his 7th birthday in November. We are trying to figure out our next step. Thanks!

What can I do next?

Try NAET; it is allergy/energy clearing. It is done by Bill Clement who has offices in Arlington & Dallas. I know others do it too. According to what I have read it helps children with ADD, ADHD, autism & don't know what all other problems besides severe allergies.

My experience with Brain Balance centers is that they are a scam. I live and teach in an area that has a center (It's no accident that they target high-middle class areas). Well meaning and devoted families are signing up,even relocating and taking out loans, etc. to pay for this "therapy". There is no research to support their claims! I have seen a stream of parents come here hopeful and leave feeling disappointed and taken advantage of. Brain Balance will show you lots of letters from parents whom they have claimed to help, but I think that their stories are the exception. I have yet to meet one, but have met and taught the children of many that have not had a good experience. Please be careful and do some extra research. It's too expensive not to.

I brought my son to Brain Balance. They promise a lot, but what they give you is even more. None of the "traditional doctors" found anything about why my son acted and felt the way he did. I knew something was there though. Brain Balance found these tendencies including some issues focussing with his eyes, core muscle control, multiple step processing issues, below grade development in muscle control and function on one side, higher than normal sensitivity to pain as well as taste and smell, and many other things. These things explained many of the things I see at home. How are things now? He's better at multiple step things in school, behavior is better, emotions are under better control, team sports are a focus again as he was starting to pull away from them due to emotional issues, and many more things. The naysayers will say that I'm not really seeing these results. My child's the same, but I think he's different. Why is he now a grade ahead in school instead of a year behind? The school is obviously seeing it. Why can he eat foods that he never could before? Why is he excelling at sports he was a little above average in before? Everyone in the waiting room was seeing these same results in their kids too. The center I took my son to had teachers, speech pathologists, and other professionals coming in to see what Brain Balance was doing because they were results in kids within weeks and months that they didn't achieve in years of working with that child.
If what I've said here isn't enough, attend a lecture.

Brain Balance is a cleverly marketed concept. Melillo's book Disconnected Kids give you info on how you can do the exercises at home. But what you don't get is the evaluation, someone else doing the exercises for you and the tutoring part. My son has autism and Brain Balance has been good for him. He is more interactive and speaks in longer phrases. He also has improved in many of the things they work on. But he will be 8 this month and is no where near age-level appropriate. BB is marketed that you can stop all your other therapies. I disagree, at least for us, we still need OT and speech. Most moms I spoke to are happy with the results. And several have done more than one session. On Amazon. com there are some reviews of the actual program too.

Hi S.,

I am not familar with "Brain Balance" but I have studied alternative treatments for learning issues, specifically ADD/ADHD, and I have found great resources in my area. Look for a place that focuses on teaching your child to work with their abilities and not against their disabilities. Look for a place that helps them with coping methods.

Check the better business bureau or your state's licensing department. Brain Balance may need to register as a therapy office, and the state may have records on complaints.

Mainly how does it feel? I know it sounds funny, but if you get a good feeling, often it's a good place.

Good Luck

Hi S.,

You may also want to consider the DORE program. www.doreusa.com

This program is covered in Dr. Hallowell's book "Delivered from Distraction" and is the program he chose for his kids.

Best wishes!
