Hi C.,
Congrats on your new baby boy! I am not going to talk about whether BPA is good or bad, because there have been enough answers about how there really are no answers yet on how bad or benign it is.
However, my knee jerk reaction when reading your request was that you need to take a breath. You are a year younger than I am. When I was a baby, my mom put me on my tummy to sleep. I was immunized, I never sat in a car seat, there were no outlet protectors, and no baby gates. I didn't wear a helmet when I rode my bike, didn't even wear a seatbelt until I was around 12, and I lived outdoors during the summer. Etc. I am sure that unless your mother was extremely hyper vigilant, your childhood was probably very similar to mine. And we both survived. We had some skinned knees, bumps to the head, and yet I think that my brain is still working fairly well even with the lack of sleep at my house.
My point is that every so many years, they will come out with dire warnings about how this or that is a danger to babies, and how children are getting seriously sick from something. There are dangers out there, but you need to keep everything in perspective, or you will need to be medicated to survive each day to prevent anxiety attacks. Due to 24 hour news channels, we hear about every bad thing that happens to people all over the world. The news channels know that fear sells, and nothing is more frightening to anyone than hearing how something bad has happened to a baby or a little kid.
Our mothers didn't hear about every child in America that died of an accident. This is a new phenomenon. They only knew about what was happening in our communities. Bad things do happen, and it is tragic, and certain things have saved lives. But a lot of people have also gotten very rich off of the fear of our children's well being. There is nothing that sells products faster than letting you know that your baby will either be seriously harmed or die without this thing.
Bottom line is that while it is important to be informed and to be a vigilant parent, you need to try and keep some perspective and realize that so many of the scary things that the news channels and manufacturers are selling us are to make them money, and not for our wellbeing. Not to mention the fact that as humans we are very resilient, and so are babies, they are tough cookies, and barring any tragedies, they tend to do just fine.
