Books on How to Write Stories, Journals for a First Grader?

I don't think a first grader needs a book on how to write stories. I think they should be given a journal and allowed to fill it up with pictures and writings of whatever they want.

A first grader can barely write or spell. They are working on the basics of sentence structure, grammar, paragraph structure, etc.

I would say the best option is to read stories to your first grader and have them read to you. Then have them dictate stories to you in their own words. Let them be as creative and free as they want. There's plenty of time later on to work on improving writing skills.

My Kindergartner just had an art assignment to draw a picture and then write a poem. I let her draw the pictures and then I wrote all the key words from the picture she drew. We used the key words list to write the poem. It all seemed to flow pretty smoothly.

I have 2 books that I bought at the used book store. The first one is Scholastic Explains Writing Homework(2nd & 3rd grade). It explains nouns, verbs, and adjectives and has examples of different styles of writing, such as a book review, a recipe, and a postcard. The 2nd book is Reading Activities by Marilee Robin Burton. It has fun hands-on activities for reading and writing, such as making a poster for a lost storybook character and hanging words on a clothesline to get them in the right order.

Have your child read books and write about them. He can also make a little book about the books he reads. Also, you can have him journal on his own. Draw a picture and write about it or write about his day etc. Reading a lot will also help improve his writing skills. I think this is awesome!! There are workbooks at Barnes and Noble or even Costco that will help with writing skills but I think reading and writing on his own is better since those books can be a bit boring. But they may help if he likes workbooks. Good luck!
