My 2 yo was in a phase where she liked to decorate herself with bandaids... You know, those waterproof NexCare ones that feature Disney princesses, Tigger & Pooh, etc. She treats them like body stickers. So, as a reward for this or that (especially for potty training efforts), I had been indulging her... That is, until 10 days ago when I pulled one off and noticed it had made a bright red sore on her leg. Nothing oozing or with puss; it looks like a burn (without the raised watery blister) and in the shape of the bandaid. I should mention that she had no injury there prior to sticking the bandaid on. Of course, it may have been there 3 or 4 days before I succeeded in getting her to let me remove it.
I was putting neosporine on it for the past week but it didn't seem to change much. The redness is definitely not spreading. One of my friends mentioned that it might be from yeast, so I started rubbing 2% yeast infection cream on it for the past 2 days. But I can't say whether it really looks any better; it might be bright pink instead of red now-?? She does not seem to be in pain nor itchy.
Has anyone else ever dealt with an infection caused from a waterproof bandaid? What did you use on it??
EDIT: By the way, the red mark is only from the inside gauze portion of the bandaid (not the entire strip or adhesive part).
Thanks everyone! Well, I took her into be checked. Doc wasn't altogether sure whether it was a reaction to latex or a yeast infection. He said the area had a certain look of a yeast infection (dark red ring around a lighter colored area on the inside) however he wasn't ready to call it that since it wasn't itchy or spreading. Told me to continue to put the yeast cream on it...
I also emailed 3M for verification on whether the NexCare Tatoo Waterproof bandages contain latex. I was under the impression that the product did not. I am actually quite familiar with latex reactions, because I am allergic (it interferes with my breathing... beyond the rash stage). I'll add info this once I get a response from them.

My 4 year old has always gotten this from bandaids. I call it her mini latex allergy (completely not confirmed by any medical professional, and the bandaids may not even be latex for all I know). It usually goes away in a couple of days if left alone.
i know you already went to the dr. but i just wanted to add a thought =)
my first thought was that because the band-aid formed a water-tight seal on her skin, and was left there over a few days, her skin was unable to breathe and heal itself (our skin is constantly shedding old skin cells and growing new ones) and therefore formed a sort-of bed sore. i would suggest in the future, just buy the regular band-aids with the cute designs, since those are open on 2 sides and would allow her skin to breathe. and then maybe tell her she can keep them on until her next bath, then they have to come off =)
I'm not sure about the yeast idea or if the problem is caused by the fact that your Band-Aids are waterproof. I guess both are possible. My personal experience with this is that when I use any type of band-aide or first aid tape the adhesive on it makes me break out in what looks like a red rash. It doesn't hurt or itch either but looks terrible. It also always take a long time for the redness to go away and then you can see the tell tale shape of a band-aide in the color of my skin. Its like it takes the tan right off me. I try to avoid putting any kind of sticky band-aides on my skin now by using gauze and ace bandages that velcro shut. Kinda overkill for little boo boos but better than being "branded" by a band-aide. She might be reacting to the adhesive too. Other than that I'm not sure. Poor thing. I hope it didn't hurt too much. :-(
