B..
I've used hydrogen peroxide, and it's worked very well. I followed these directions:

My 12 yo washed her jean shorts, didn't tell me about the blood from her period and now all her pairs are stained...alot!
Any tips on how to get the stains out? Or is there a chance I could dye them blue or black or would the stains just get darker?
Thanks everyone!
thanks friends! Its on all 5 pairs of her shorts!!! So they all have been washed already. I will try peroxide first since I have that on hand and yes, good idea for her to deal with this and learn from it. Thanks everyone and Happy Friday!!!

Oxyclean. Let it soak in a looooong time. Then pour the detergent on the jeans, and give them a little scrub. Wash on cold. Don't put through the dryer again til you are satisfied.
And make HER learn how to treat these stains and see how much trouble this is. I was her age when my mom taught me how to treat stains on clothes and wash my own.
Our dog cut her foot once when we were out of town. We came home to dried blood on the carpet, couch and a blanket. I used SpotShot and it got all of it out. It's a carpet cleaner, blue can with an orange lid. It works wonders. I use it on my laundry all the time. If you can find the stuff in a spray bottle and not the aerosol, the smell is not as strong. If it's dried it, I don't know how it will work, but it is definitely worth a shot.
Shout should get it. Or there is an Oxyclean spray too, much like shout. It works well also.
Ice can help if it hasn't been washed already.
And I second the suggestion to have your daughter come actually DO it while you stand there giving instructions, so that she learns how to deal with this herself. AND learns to do so promptly, not a few days later...
Shout or Spray N Wash always works for me.
Yes hydrogen peroxide really does work wonders. Since you've already washed them, I'm not sure how easy it will be to get out though. For blood stains, I usually just scrub them with regular soft soap and cold water by rubbing the fabric against itself and then wash in the regular cycle of whatever it is and it is fine. I only break out the peroxide if it's really bad, which it sounds like your case might be! Good luck!
Just wanted to add that OxyClean probably will work too but it bleached some of my husbands darker shorts when I used a paste and soaked them. He cut his head open and bled all over everything! It was bad. I did get the shorts clean but they haven't looked the same since. They don't look too bad, just kinda grainy if that makes sense.
Buy a bar of Fels Naptha laundry soap. It's in the laundry aisle at Walmart. 97 cents.
Wet the fabric and rub it with the corner of the bar. Work the soap into the fabric. Wash as usual.
There are two things I swear by.
One is Fels Naptha. You have to be a bit careful using it on dark things (test first).
The other I get at the Dollar Store. It's called "Awesome". It's a yellow liquid that comes in a spray bottle. It gets blood out really, really well. My son gets bloody noses and I just spray his pillow cases, let them soak, spray some more and scrub a little. I keep that stuff on hand at all times.
I would keep a bottle of it under the bathroom sink so your daughter can spray her panties or other things right away and let them soak as opposed to just tossing them in the washer next time.
Best wishes.
You could try Woolite for the stains. I used to use it for this situation and even blood on caps (baseball) for the kids.
Good luck otherwise it is time to dye them black and blue to cover up the stains and for her to wear these when she has her period to keep the others clean.
The other S.
PS Time for her to take her personal hygiene seriously.
Any blood stains have to be soaked in cold water first. This is still be best way to get them out. I have little hope that those stains in the shorts will come out now after washing and drying but you can give it a good try. Good luck !
I know you've gotten lots of responses already - Oxyclean is great; I've never had any problems with it at all - but I have one thing to add: no hot water, and no dryer until the stain is gone. The heat will cook the proteins, and make it much harder to get out (not necessarily impossible, but maybe). (Same thing with gravy stains, or anything with a protein base.)
Good luck!
Whatever stain remover you use, really saturate the stain and let the detergent work for 24 hours before you try to wash again. I usually use Shout, but any stain remover that says its for protein stains should work. Letting them sit overnight with the detergent is the trick.
I found a homemade solution for stain removing. This also works GREAT on yellow stains under the arms on white shirts! And it does work well on blood and it does not discolor colored items.
1 teaspoon Dawn liquid soap
3-4 tablespoons hydrogen peroxide (I use 4 tablespoons)
2 tablespoons baking soda
Put some of the solution on the stain and use a scrub brush to scrub it well into the stain. I rinse and re apply and scrub some more and I have also let the solution soak into the stain until I'm ready to wash.
If the shorts are white, you can dilute bleach with water and let the garment soak and and rinse well afterward.
