Blood in Urine

I have a very active 5-year old boy (3 weeks from 6th birthday) who is still wearing Pull-up at night. While I'm not concerned about that right now, when emptying the trash today I found a Pull-up that had what appeared to be dried blood toward the top front. It was very red (dried brownish), but was not the urine with a pinkish tint that would make me think of a slight amount of blood in the urine. This was not last night's pull-up which looked normal, but one from the night before. Since he throws his own away when dressing, I just happened to find it as our 10-year old usually takes out the trash. He has not had an injuries that I know of with the exception of falling off the monkey bars onto his bottom (a couple of sore small bruises), but the fall didn't even make him cry. He complained of a stomachache last night and vomited, but felt better afterward and went to school today. No fever, and spririts fine except for a few pretty major tantrums the last two days. ***TMI-gross warning!***Since he vomited into a bag in the car last night, I was able to check it this morning and could not identify anything that resembled blood or anything else unusual. Obviously I'll talk to him and have him look out for unusual stools/urine and check his urine myself, but does anyone have any ideas? Thank you much!

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Thank you all for your heart-felt responses and sound advice. After receiving the first response about an hour after I posted this, I made an appointment that afternoon at his Pediatrician's office. The was given a thorough examine of the entire region and took a urine test. While there was no trace of blood, his Ped asked me to check the pull-ups every morning for the next couple of weeks and also suggested that I check the potty after each elimination. Since the stomach symptoms disappeared directly after he vomited, and since the vomit contained no blood, he was apt to think that they were unrelated. I really appreciate all the possibilities as one in particular, could very well be causing this and/or another issue we have with the potty. Thank you all again so much. Your advice mirrored my own thoughts about having him seen that day!

Take him to the Dr., and have them check his urine for a UTI. Could be seriious for a boy. Make sure you do. He sounds symptomatic. I have worked in and around pediatrics for 14 years, and my 16-year-old son had renal (kidney) surgery at 10. It is all too familar a problem for me. Seriously-don't wait around for more proof-you have enough already. Best wishes.

C., How many days have you seen the blood in the urine? If it's been more than a coulple of days or if's getting worse, you may need to call your doctor. Does it hurt him to pee? He could have an infection. There could be a coincidence between his tantrums, stomach ache and vomiting. A nurse practitioner could answer your calls on the phone and reccommend to you whether it's something the doctor should see. Good Luck, S.

You know..... seriously...... if you have any instincts what so ever that something is not right..... this is your child.. your flesh and blood.... the love of your life..... by all means don't wait around. Call the dr's office and talk to someone there about it. You don't want something to be bad wrong and then you waited. This is your baby. Better safe than sorry. And I don't care if they thought I was a worry wart.... make them listen and check him out.
If you son is old enough to take them off himself, talk to him and tell him that you want him to tell you if he sees blood, ask him if he hurts down there, does it hurt when he pees.....he can tell you.
But by all means don't wait around.... call the doc.

My younger brother had the same type thing happen when he was about 5 or 6. With the blood in his underwear but it happened pretty frequently and he had to have a little procedure done to make his urethra a little larger. The vomitting was because his little body wasn't getting all of the urine out of his bladder. I am 13 years older than he is that is why I remember the details. I would just keep an eye out for additional blood in his pullups and then make a decision. But as a mother you should follow your own instincts of course.

I'd take him to the Doctor and get a urinalysis just in case. However, as he does undress himself, he could have just scratched himself anywhere on his body and wiped it on the diaper as he took it off. Does his lower back hurt? Check it out just in case. Children have high tolerance for discomfort and have been known to walk around for days with broken arms etc. I would just be on the safe side, but its probably nothing.

Please have this child checked out. I have learned by experiance myself. Just because you don't see blood doesn't mean there isn't any blood. I had a son that had blood in his bowl movements and I wasn't able to see it but when I took him to the doctor they were the ones that could see it in their test they do. My son had tummy pains that would come and go. In the beginning they would come and go but some time later he wasn't able to eat because everytime he would eat his tummy would hurt. This my be nothing for your child but then it could really be something really going on. My son ended up having Crohn's disease and suffered very dearly.

Hey C.! to calm your worries and or fears just make him an appointment with his pediatrician and have him checked out. Blood in the urine could one of a number of health problems. Don't try to doctor him yourself. That is not something that every child experiences. It could be something very serious and each day he is not seen more damage could be done to his little body. And you mentioned the throwing up...another symptom of something going on in his little body....something isn't right.....please let us know what you find out....there is nothing scarier when your child is ill or not feeling well.

Please, please take this child to the doctor or ER immediately! Blood in the urine and vomiting and abdominal pain can be serious signs and should never be ignored. Tantrums could also be associated with pain. I work in the medical profession, and am very worried about the symptoms you have described in your child. I would not hesitate a moment to get medical care for your child!

Does your son have a lot of ear infections? If so, I would check into that or any other routine infections. I wet my bed until I was nine years old due to repeated ear, nose and throat infections until I had surgery on my ears and nose. Other than that, the only thing I can think of is a weak or very sensitive bladder. Hope this helps!!!

I would have him checked. He might have hurt himself inside his dear body. Is he eating well? Does he sleep ok? You are a good mom. You are looking so closely at what is happening. Maybe the pull up is bothering him. They make them to were they make a child sweat possibly or be too dry. Maybe the tape or band on the pull up is hurting him. These are just suggestion.
Keep up the good work.

Have a good day TODAY!!

C.,
I hope this is not the case...My Grandson was hit and run over by a bicycle when he was 9 and it tore his kidney which caused him a stomach pain, stomach upset, blood in urine. He (His mother stayed with him) spent over a week in the hospital. It ended up repairing itself thank the good lord but, it was scary. The fall could have done internal damage. I would have him checked out.
Good luck and god bless!

There's a few things that could be going on. Anytime there is blood in the urine you should take your child to the doctor. A virus can cause blood in urine, but so can a spleen detaching. The fact that he's got a stomachache and vomiting and no fever warrants further investigation.

Hi-
I would check and see if the doctor could do a urinalysis to make sure there isn't blood showing in his urine. If so they will want to make sure there isn't something causing this other than minor irritation. On rare occasions sometimes there can be kidney stones. My son had them but it was due to a metabolic condition. He is 5 too and wears a pull up at night as well-we too are working on that one! Take care, J.
