Birthday Party Suggestions for My Boy/girl Twins?

Hi, I have a set of boy/girl twins who will have their 3rd birthday in January. I'm torn between having their party at a place like Pump It Up or the Imagine Children's Museum vs having a party at home. The invitees will be mostly family and my twins are the youngest of their cousins who range from 4 - 19 (most of the cousins are towards the older range.)

Any suggestions or tips?

We had my 3 year old birthday party at Little Gym (the one in Puyallup) and absolutely loved it! The 2nd birthday party was at home and I was exhausted by the end of it. The 3rd birthday party was fun for all the kids, ages 1 to 14. They tailored it to the age of most of the guests, and knowing it was a pretty mixed group had a mix of activities. Highly recommended! I walked away from the party with exhausted, content 3 and 5 year olds.(BTW, my boy's bday is in the first week of Jan and found having the party away from home helped decrease the stress of taking down Christmas decorations and spic-and-span cleaning after all the holiday fun).

If your decision is based on stress/no stress, it's always best to do it away from home.

I am a firm believer in saving the big things like museums, etc. for when they are old enough to care, and remember it. In our family, we do home parties... or maybe a pizza parlor... until they are 4 or 5.

Id say pump it up, or 321 bounce are great places to have party. Just your group of family friends, and party room for 45 min. Childrens museum is ok, but really everyone is going other directions and only get party room 30 min or so.
Chuck E Cheese is also pretty good for the kiddos. Kind of headache for parents but the joy on kids face make it worth it :)

I think having a party out at a special place will be remembered and appreciated more by your children if they are older. Having a home party for a 3rd birthday party should be fun enough for them.

Rule of thumb, 2 guests per year of age... so they're going to be 3, no more than 6 guests. They don't have the attention spans to play with anymore than that and to have a great time. 19 yr olds don't want to come to a 3 yr old's birthday party. If it's a family party you want, then a buffet lunch, cake and ice cream. Gifts for the twins. If you must invite all the cousins to a kids' event, then don't invite the ones who are older than 5 or 6. Those kids are bigger, have different interests and this is the twins' day. Keep the activity age appropriate. Bigger isn't necessarily better. Getting a haul of gifts isn't the purpose, or shouldn't be the purpose of the party. Your twins will end up associating loving and liking them being expressed with things... the time spent with them is the most important gift, being able to share in the fun. You can go broke providing a huge party. And as far as your twins are concerned, small gifts are very appropriate and suggest to all those aunts, uncles and grandparents that the money they were going to spend on that plastic toy and all it's batteries through the years could go into a GET account for their future college/higher ed expenses. Your house probably looks like an annex for Toys R Us, so invest some of those gift dollars into their futures. It's the best gift a relative could give all of you.

We have a lot in common! I have boy/girl twins that just turned 3 in October.
I did a pretty big party for them here at our house. It was a jungle/Lion King party. I posted all the decorating, games, prizes, cakes, party favor, etc. pictures on my blog. If you're interested in using some of my ideas just send me a message and I'll give you the link to my blog.

What city are you guys in? I'm a SAHM as well and will have been married to my hubby 12 years in January. Lots in common! :)

Wow, what a range of advice!
Personally, we have a very tiny house and even having two additional families over is not very comfortable--add toddlers to the mix... oh boy! Plus, it's a lot of work to get the house party-ready, only to have to clean it up once more after the party. I can totally relate to wanting to do it elsewhere. After our older daughter's 2nd birthday party, my husband and I agree that it's "out of the house" until they're old enough to appreciate sleepovers, OR we get a bigger house ;)

We have been to two parties at Pump It Up with our "almost" 3 year old and she had a BLAST both times (so did my husband)! They are for ages 2 and up, but it sounds like that won't be an issue. We are having her 3rd birthday party "back home" at one of the franchises with her cousin, and many family friends with kids (mostly under 10). I also like the idea of a "time constraint" since you only get X amount of time for the party arenas, and then X amount of time for the party room. Have you been? they do offer "toddler time" drop-in sessions in the mornings during the week usually, I think it's $6 a kid or something for an hour or so. You can check it out and see if they like it.

We also LOVE the Imagine Childrens Museum in Everett! We have a membership and have considered a party there as well. I think if the majority of the kid guests are 10 and younger, they'd have fun there.

There's always Chuck E Cheese ;o) Nothing says "birthday party" more than losing your hearing, eating bad pizza, and getting bumpted/run into by toddlers, kids, teens, etc. for hours! Of course, if you ask our soon-to-be 3 year old, that's where we're having her party!

Hi M.,

Not sure if you have made any decisions so far. I always opt for what I am most comfortable with. Some years we have done in the home and others we have done at a party place.

If you decide to do yours at home, I have a great activity for all ages. Just visit my site at www.FunPartyForKids.com to see what I have to offer. I even have over 25 theme parties that we can work together to make the twins birthday special and fun for all your guests.

Hi M.. I have boy/girl twins that are turning 2 in 2 weeks. ACK! For the first birthday we didn't do much other than family get together. This year we have decided to go to Children's Museum. The price is pretty comparable for other events and I like the fact that everyone invited gets to use the Museum all day long. I will be more than happy to email you once I have the party and can tell you about my experience. But so far the staff have been great and it was super easy to set it up.

I would have it at home.
I know places like Pump it Up are popular but I believe they are dangerous for infants. We recently had our daughter at a festival with a bouncy. With all the children in there she couldn't play/bounce. The children cannot control their movements and that can lead to dangerous collisions. With the age range of the children at the party the older/bigger children will have to be careful of the younger children making it not so much fun for anyone.
Would the older children really enjoy a children's museum?
I have a great idea for an at home birthday party if you are interested, message me... Cheap, not so many party decorations, food everyone loves, could be extravagant/fancy if you want to go further with the idea... I am doing it next year for my will be 2 yr old.

If it were me, I'd go with the traditional at home party with some balloons and streamers. Kids often get the impression early on that birthday parties need to pull out all the stops, and if you start with "spectacular", you don't have room to pull back next year without the kids being disappointed. Older cousins, I'm sure, will find some way of amusing themselves at your house and it can just be a time for family to hang out. If you are wanting to do an outing connected with their birthday, perhaps you and your husband can take the kids to a fun place just as a family at a separate time. Kids can often become extremely overstimulated with the combination of exciting venue, cake and 'birthday', and they might enjoy their visit to a special site more when they can just play.
