Best Thermometer

Not a fan of the current thermometer I use...it takes too long to read, and with a squirming 7 month old, that is near impossible. Any recommendations on a good thermometer? Price isn't that important since I use my company's flex card. Thank you!

So What Happened?

Wow--you guys are awesome! I didn't know if I would get any response...next thing I knew, my mailbox was full! I am heading to the store today to check out both the Braun Ear thermometer and the Exergen Temporal Artery thermometer...And I will be checking out the book "How to Raise a Healthy Child in spite of your Doctor". I do agree that a fever does have a purpose as long as it is not too high. Thank you so much for all of your help!

I've had a Thermoscan for years. It's the best one I've ever used and is quick. It comes with disposable covers because you insert it into the ear. All you do is aim and press a button for 3 seconds and up comes the temp. I hope they still make them!

i agree with temporal artery thermometer. my mom got me one for christmas last year and i love it. it's easy to use, accurate, and non-invasive if you get my drift. and you don't have to worry about disturbing a sleeping baby when you take their temp. it is the same type they use in the hospital.

When my son had a fever induced seizure at 9 months old, I had to take his temperature about 20 times a day for 3 days. I didn't want to put him thrugh a rectal temperature that many times (or at all, for that matter) I bought a forehead scanner thermometer. The brand is EXERGEN. It takes about 3 seconds and you just slide it across the forehead. I found the best way to hold the baby is to sit him on your lap facing away from you and hold the top of his head against your chest and then slide it across. This themometer has been a life saver. I bought mine for 50$ but I think the price has gone down to about 35$. Good Luck!

Summer's has a good health pack that includes a rectal thermometer and a forehead strip. The strip is amazing. I have found people stealing the strip from the package because they do not sell it separately.

A rectal reading is the best, so I sing to my baby while I hold it in and count to 90.

Good Luck,

The temporal thermometer is available now in stores. It runs around $50. It is like the one used in the peds office. It is great! You can even take the baby's temp when he/she is sleeping. Amazing!

We love our digital ear thermometer by Braun. It just takes a couple seconds and is easy to use. Expensive but worth it.

I have 5 kids and I do own a thermometer, but I don't use it much. Instead I use a book:

"How to Raise a Healthy Child in Spite of Your Doctor" by Dr. Mendlesohn. Here's a link:

http://www.amazon.com/Raise-Healthy-Child-Spite-Doctor/dp...

Dr. M had almost 30 years experience in pediatrics when he wrote this book. It's like our family bible. I can't tell you how many trips to the Dr. and how much medication we've NOT had to spend money or time on- but most important, how much WORRY it's saved me. The amount of worry it's saved me is just priceless!! It is well organized in sections, has a great index- the information on vaccines is out of date, don't rely on it for that, but for everything else I highly recommend this book!!

Read the section on fevers- you will only need a thermometer for after vaccinations (if you do vax.) and if you suspect poisoning or heat stroke (although for either of those you may be going straight to the ER anyway!)

I also have a temporal thermometer and LOVE it. I believe the brand is Exergen. I bought it at Sams for around $30. It only takes a few seconds to get a reading. It seems to be pretty accurate.

We have a temporal thermometer and love it! You run it across the forehead and it reads the temp through the temporal artery. Verq quick and easy (even on a sleeping child) and the accuracy is comprable to other thermometers I have used. I have even read some things that say drs. prefer this type now but I don't know for sure. I think it was about &50.

I have found a thermometer that I really like and I believe it works very well. It is the "Safety 1st Hospital Choice 3 in 1 thermometer". It reads in 7 seconds and can be used for rectal temp, oral temp, or under the arm. It has a mode button so that it is more accurate depending on where you are taking the temp. I bought the original one I had at Target but it got misplaced and I could only find replacements online. The quick reading and the mode buttons, to me, make this thermometer a huge hit!

Hi B.. I have two small sons, and also battled with finding the right thermometer - until last year. I had several inexpensive ones that were slow, once they moved I'd had to start over. Then I found (at Walmart)a new kind which is a Temporal Scanner. You simply roll it from one temple to the other and it gives an accurate temp based on the temp of the blood in the artery. It really works, and is definitely worth the $40 that we spent on it! Get this: I've taken my children's temps while they were sleeping and they never woke! Love it!

Go to the website www.onestepahead.com, they have lots of digital and easy to read thermometers to choose from, and most are pediatrician recommended. I looooove the variety of other baby stuff they have to offer as well! And most are comparitive priced to local stores.

Walgreens has the Exergen Artery Thermo for about $35. I love it! I researched all the thermos I could find before I gave birth, but after seeing the scanner they use in the hospital and reading up of them I decided to go with that one. They have really good reviews and come highly recommended.

My friends also use the Red Cross ear thermo from target - not sure of the cost but they brag about it.

gotta say I am in line with Allison M. on this one,

I keep a digital Ear therm on hand, I know they are not the most accurate, but used properly, not too bad & only takes a second & not invasive. Good for getting a ball park figure. I am a firm believer of letting the fever do its work. Brain damage does not happen unless the fever is up over 106. so, type of thermometer may depend on the kind of mom you are! If you worry a lot, forget the ear thermometer.

Hi! We just got the "Vicks ComfortFlex Digital Thermometer" which I like alot! It works in about 12 seconds and is for mouth, underarm or rectal. It comes with probe covers that just slip on and then you disgard after use. That saves you from having to wash it after every use. Very inexpensive and can find it at any drug store. Hope this helps.

I have used every thermometer I can think of. I finally went out and bought an ear thermometer b/c I was tired of it taking too long. I have a 2 and 4 year old so getting them to sit while I took their temp was a constant battle every time. I bought a Braun ear thermometer, it was a little pricey but it is fast and very accurate. I would take it several times b/c I didn't believe it was so fast and every time it was the same and when we went to the dr.s I noticed they had the same one. The nurse said that is the best place to take a temp and man it was fast and pain free for all of us. Good luck. Mine was about 50.00

When we had our first we bought one of those electric ear thermometers. Now that we have two, I WILL NOT EVER go back. It is quick, easy and pretty accurate. Walmart, K-Mart any discount store has one. On ours there are two buttons, one for on/off, and the other is to start the thing. It only takes two seconds and is not invasive in any way. Good luck!

I work in a Pediatrics unit at a hospital and we use the temporal artery thermometer. They are very accurate. I have an ear one at home and do not like it at all. Planning on switching soon. They have them at Wal-Mart and Babies-R-Us plus probably other stores also. Like $30 at Wal-Mart.
Good luck.

I used a strip. It had a temperture gage reading on it. When you put it against the child skin or forhead it would show a color code of were their temperture was. Go to the drug store they can probably help you. And ask them about the temperture strip.
