I have a very active and playful three and a half year old that I feel already needs and would love to be involved in some type of activity with other children his age. We have tried gymnastics and it really didn't grasp his interest but he may be to young for another sport such as soccer, teeball etc... Does anyone recommend an age apporiate sport?

What can I do next?

I would suggest soccer, if you are in the holland area, the soccer spot has a class availble for the 3-4 year old children. At that age its not about winning and competivness, it is just fun for them.

I think he would love soccer. Maybe not AYSO because that is organized teams that play games. You could check with community Ed in you area or one of those sports domes that seem to be popping up every where and see if they have a soccer skills program. My now 4 year old did a skills program at 3 years with the high school soccer team in our town. He LOVED it. It was just organized enough that it kept his attention. He learned everything he needed to play on a team with AYSO.
Another option would be karate. My kids haven't done that yet but my neighbor boy does it and loves it. He started at 2 and is now 4(5 in a few weeks). He has never tried his moves on other kids either, which is a plus for the program. He takes that at a local karate school.
Swimming classes are always a hit for my kids. This time of year our community ed program gives them at the beach which is much more fun then the school pool because you can stay and play in the sand after class.
Do you have SKIP at your school district? That is a great program at schools. It's for 0-5 year olds. It's just a play group that does activities sometimes but it gives some interaction with other kids of the same age. your local school should have info if it's available in your area.
Good Luck!

My son loves to play little micro-kicker soccer he is 3 now 2 when he started. Even if he didn't do every activity and drill at least he was running and trying to do it with other 2-3 year olds and we also have had him in swim classes since he was 8 months old. We have found a bunch of activities and classes through our city, go to your city's website they might have something for you and it is usually cheaper than an organization. Being almost 4 he has a lot more classes available to him. I hope I helped. Good luck!

Our YMCA here has Pee-Wee leagues of T-ball and Soccer. The parent participates with them, sound like just what you are looking for. Also with summer here get him involved with some swimming classes if nothing else for the survival skills.
Good luck!

I would recommend karate (or some form of it). It really lets out some energy, is great for coordination, and even better for discipline. When I sent my step-son, he was in a class with about 10 other kids, so he got the interaction with others, also. Good luck!

At that age my kids did Tiny Tot soccer through the Grand Rapids Rec. Dept. and that was very well run. They also did the sports sampler class at the Y. That introduced them to soccer, basketball and football.

I do recommend AYSO for soccer for 3 year olds lol. My son started and they get to "practice" for a half an hour and then they get to play a "game" for a half an hour. My kids absolutely loved it!! I also had my boys in tball at 4, not all programs will start at 3.

Hi there, not sure what area you live in but my son is 20 months and is starting this Saturday at Total Sports Complex with the LiL Kickers. They have organized classes for each age group. A co-worker here at work has a 2.5 year old who's been doing this since he was 18 mos. old and said that he just loves it!! You may want to give it a try. Good luck.

Hi S.,

My oldest son started playing hockey at 3 1/2 years old and continues to play after almost 13 years. If your child is showing an interest in something by all means let them try it out. They are more coordinated than we think and they pick up on new things so much easier.

Good luck and have fun with it!

I am not sure where you live. There is a place called Joe Dumars in Shelby or sterling heights. They have whats called a lil kickers program. My daughter does it and its great and its also a good tool also.
The kids listen and follow directions . The price is reasonable too. If you need more info. Email me and good luck

Hi S.,
What about swimming, which he'll be learning a great skill or also Gymboree. I had my very active son enrolled for 2 years there and he loved it. There's all sorts of different things they do with the kids (art, music, climbing, etc.) and it's a great way to meet other moms in your area with the same age kids. Good luck!
