Does he have a scooter? We have a couple of boys that age on my block and they are constantly either on their scooters, bikes, or something else that moves. Maybe a new helmet too if his is an old one. Or a brand-new basketball goal at the house?

When Ty turned 7 we went to Triple Play (family water park, bowling, laser tag, etc) for an overnight stay. He LOVED it :)

For Christmas last year (he was almost 7) he got an itty bitty ipod (like $40) that he gets to pick songs and purchase for. We keep it put up, away from our 3 y/o, and he only gets it certain times (like long car rides, on the way to a football game b/c Boys of Fall is his favorite/motivating song!).

a day trip planned with one of his parents or a favorite aunt and uncle withh or witout a friend/cousin
Ex.
Taking the train downtown to a cool museum and out to eat, or some awesome place to visit that he;s been wanting to go. You could give him the money alotted for it and let him pay his way, so he still gets a gift and gets to learn to budget, for food, souvenier, train pass....

indoor skydiving, or flying lessons they start at that age and they;re pretty cheap too under 60 bucks ussually
or paintball trip or camping trip

My son is a science freak. The things he can tell you blow my mind. Sometimes I have to stop him because it is just too much. And he has an awesome memory. For his birthdays, even if he got a toy, I always make sure he gets some kind of facts book. He has been like this since he was 5 or 6 so he really likes it. Look into what your son really likes and expand on that. If my son got art supplies, they would have just sat there. I have been aable to get him to read by getting him things that really interest him.

He also likes to make things so Legos and other types of kits to create are things I look into.

My twins turned 6 this year and we got them each a digital timex watch, which they love!! Someone got them tickets to a local theater production, which I thought was pretty special.

A day of fun and a small gift. Take him an amusement park, museum or the movies. Make the whole day about him. Or get a kit for a craft you can do together or a science experiment set.

Hi V.,
Not sure what your son's interests might be, or what his maturity level is, but for my 7 yr old son who is a Cub Scout, we got him a Swiss Army knife. He is so proud to have it (and of COURSE he is not allowed to keep it in his room, or have access to it unsupervised) BUT just the fact of owning one that's his very own,and just like Dad's and Grandpa's :) makes him very proud. He likes to show it to everyone (again, under supervision) and we will let him use it on camping trips, and for occasional tasks around the house. And it's something he can keep for a lifetime :)
If he likes gardening, perhaps some of his very own gardening tools.
If he likes art, then maybe some really nice or special art supplies.
Hope this helps. Good luck and Happy Bday to your sweet boy!
