My family and I are taking our first flight with our daughter who will be about 18 mos. at the time of our trip. I was wondering if anyone had any tips for flying as I can't really afford to get her her own seat and I know she isn't required to have one. She will be on our laps which makes me incredibly nervous about how to keep her contained for a long flight. We are traveling from Little Rock to Vancouver. Some people have told me dramamine is actually safe and will keep her calm, also that you can request to have your stroller waiting for you when you get off the plane?? I just need some advice and if you are aware of any airlines that are better than others as far as dealing with young children. Thanks so much!!

What can I do next?

If I were you I would talk to the Dr. and make sure she had NO fluid on her ears before you fly. Ear problems can make for an extrememly bad trip if the pressure builds up! I have also recently read that portable DVD players work wonders on small children flying. If your daughter likes to watch cartoons, I recommend taking one with you. Another idea is to look at the different airline websites and get advice from them. They have a ton of experience, and probably have some good recommendations.

I actually travelled to Spokane with my daughter so I know how you feel! She's 2 and a half and has been to WA three times, first time at 3 months. My ex travelled with her the last two times and he's said she made it fine. Usually the plane is not full when you get on and the attendants can try to get you an empty seat. If that doesn't happen, buy her some cheap little toys that she's never seen before and she'll be entertained by that, or coloring, etc. For her ears, get her to eat something or drink a sippy cup during take off and landing. As for the stroller, you can check that at the gate as luggage, or ask the CSR about leaving it at the front with the attendants. Most airlines are very accomodating; they should be as much as you shell out for a ticket!

I would def say don't take American. We have used them twice and both times it was a horrible experience. They were just rude to me and the chilren. We have had great experiences wtih Southwest.

I flew with my 3 month old son over the holidays, and we went on American Airlines...they were just okay. My advice is to try to sit in the bulkhead seating (the first seat in coach with the extra leg room). When you check in, ask to get put on the list for this seat. They are reserved for handicapped people first, then for parents with small children. This helped so much having that extra leg room. The people at AA were willing to help a little, but not as much as I thought they should have. Yes, you can bring your stroller right up to the door of the plane. Then you fold it up, they'll put it below the plane, and bring it back up when you reach your destination. Good luck, and feel free to write back if ya have any questions!
