Belly Ache

My son will be 4 in about 3 weeks. Lately he's been complaining about his tummy "hurting". How can you tell if they're just hungry or have to use the bathroom and they don't know how to describe the feeling as hunger? He has been eating and pooping just fine. I'm just wondering how you would know if he needs to go to the doctor....anyone experienced this?

What can I do next?

My son has regularly complained about "tummy aches" since he was small. ( around 3) I talked to my doctor about it and got the advise of: watch his diet, monitor his BMs, journal his compaints to see if there are common things happening. What i noticed is whenever my son had too much dairy his stomach would hurt. (yogurt, milk, cheese and icecream). So we cut back on the diary but as he's gotten older, I have notice him straining at bowel movements so we started adding a cap of Miralax to his water once a day. That has helped tremendously. I also just keep an eye on what is going on in his life. Sometime stress and worry can cause belly aches in little ones and they can't really communicate what is going on with their little bodies. My BEST advice is to watch his diet, see if there is anything there he might be sensitive to. And of course, know your child. Know when it's hungry because he is having a growth spert or didn't really eat the dinner he fed to the dog. :) All else fails, talk to your doctor. Hope his tummy trouble improves!

He may be developing a food allergy. Keep a food journal for a week of what he eats...note the day and time if he starts complaining. Then when you go into the doc, if it keeps up you wil have done foot work for the doctor. It will take that step out of your doc duty. He will be happy to see you have been keeping up and that will help him put a finger what is going on. fewer test possibly for lil guy.

My 4 year old will tell me his tummy hurts if he is hungry. because to them they only can tell you hurt. They dont have reasoning to know..''i feel yucky because...''

I hope it passes for him!! and that you guys can get a finger pointed to what is going on.

My little girl just turned 5 and occasionally complains about her stomach hurting but for her its because she's hungry. She's going through a growth spurt and I can keep her fed and so she's not used to the empty stomach feeling. Sounds like it could be a number of different things after reading the other posts. Good luck.

My 6 year old was complaining of a tummy ache right before she started kindergarten - she was eating fin, BM's were fine, etc - went ahead and took her to urgent care on the 3rd day of it, turned out she had a UTI~! Since then, I'm a better safe than sorry kind of Momma
