If your 5 year old son is still wetting the bed I suggest you go to the doctor and discuss Enuresis. It's a very common medical condition among children, mostly boys. It can last as long as age 12, usually when puberty hits. There's nothing that can be done to "fix it". Do not punish. It's a medical condition. This has been common for many years but hidden. But now it's coming out of the closet. For example, they have overnight pull ups for big kids just for this reason.
My oldest son, now 23, had this problem. I had no idea until we saw the doctor for it at age 8! We thought it was laziness and punished him. It can happened most nights but may have a dry night once in a while which gives the impression that he can hold his urine but is lazy. Not true. The only time we punished him was for not cleaning up after himself, per our rules. But as the doctor told us, puberty would hit and it would be gone. It was! So it turned from bed wetting to nocturnal emission. Yah, not fun but all normal and natural. Just be patient and supportive.
