Bedroom Furniture for 2 Boys Sharing a Room

We are building a new room in our attic for my boys (they already share a small room with toddler beds). They will be about 3 and 4 when the room is ready. It will be a pretty large room and I should be able to fit 2 beds, dressers, desks, etc in there. My biggest question is what type of beds to get that will be practical and hopefully last for a long time. I was thinking maybe twin beds with trundles underneath. That way if they have friends stay over eventually, they would have a place to stay but I also wouldn't have to take up all the space with 2 large double beds. Also, we will not have a guest room (just an office with a pull out single bed) so it would be nice to possibly use their room for out of town guests (about twice a year). But, it seems like trundle beds can get pretty pricey. I am thinking I don't want bunk beds, but I am not sure. I guess I could even do 2 sets of bunks and have 1 or both with the double bed on bottom. I just don't want to spend too much money on that kind of extras if we will never get the use out of them. Or do I just go with 2 regular twins or 2 double beds? I would appreciate any feedback/recommendations on the types of beds/furniture that have worked for you moms in the same situation with 2 kids sharing a room. Types, brands, costs, etc would be greatly appreciated too. Thanks!

What can I do next?

I would go with twin beds and good solid desks. They will use the desks from now till the get out of school. As for sleeping room for guests I would think about maybe putting a pull out couch in the office/den room that you have. It can be your office and when you have company the couch pulls out to make a bed for your guests. I would not get full size beds in the boys rooms till they are much older. Our boys got full size beds when they hit highschool. until then they had twin beds. bunk beds actually. another thing. You may want to keep them in the toddler beds for a while longer. My boys were still fitting in the toddler beds even though we got bunkbeds. a good toddler bed will hold them till they are about 5 or 6. good luck

I would do two regular twins and get a blow up mattress for out of town guests. We use one for ours and it works out pretty well. Trundles are nice, but pricey. We're thinking about one, but my MIL really wants to buy our DD's bed and she's pushing the trundle. If it was us paying, I dont think we'd be thinking about it.

I have two boys myself that share a room together. We got a bunk bed trying to save some room. It was a mistake for us. No one wants the top bunk "( My best friend has the very same issue with her boys, so we both have them side by side like two twin beds. I would suggest a trundle. Boy I sure wish I would have gotten one that has a bed underneath instead of storage, they would have loved being so close to each other. But I think for you if you can afford the space two trundles with storage would do nicely. Double might be a bit much for now and a single size will last for a VERY long time.
Best Regards,

I can honestly say I will never have bunk beds in my home. I have a friend I met in 7th grade and as we grew older she had several children. One of her sons, at about age 6-7 fell off the top bunk and died. I can't say it wasn't a freak accident and shouldn't be taken into consideration but please think about a fall zone with fall material underneath if you decide to have bunk beds.

My neice put her son directly into a full or queen size bed because it will be his bed until he leaves home. He's going to be a big football player type guy so it works for them.

When my 1st husband was little he and his brother shared a room and they had twin beds that were a modular set. They fit into a corner and there was a square table that went directly into the corner. The beds were against the walls and one actually slide into the table.

Well, that was as clear as mud so I look them up online.

This type room arrangement leaves almost all the floor space clear. If you had under the bed drawers then they could use that for their under clothes and socks and hang the rest. Then they wouldn't have to have bulky dressers. But the idea of trundles is good too. Sleeping bags and a "campout" type sleepover is always fun though. They have indoor tents kids can pop up and use for fun stayovers.

Our boys (6 & almost 8) share a room. We searched high & low for something that I would like. Of course anything I found that I liked & would work for them & their space was outrageously priced or cheap garbage. My husband just made their beds. They are captains beds, which are the beds with the drawers underneath. (3, theirs are pretty deep) Their room is not too huge or too small, but with their drawers underneath it eliminates them stashing things under the bed or things getting lost and there is only one dresser in their room to share. My husband also made this, it matches their beds. It is 8 drawers, 4 side by side. They have plenty of space for their things. And there is room in their room for a toy box and a bookshelf too.

The beds are twin, they are kind of high, (32+ inches?) but they have been in them since they were about 2/3, earlier? I can't remember. They have never fallen out. (I don't see the point to a toddler bed at all. But that's just me) But they are very sturdy, well made & I expect them to last until they move out. I would suggest these types of beds simply for the drawers and of course they can't hide anything under them for you to find later!! I don't like bunk beds either. I don't get having extra beds in case of a sleepover. Just get them twin beds. It sounds like the room is big enough, and if you like the idea of the captains beds, I'd recommend that. Gives you the extra storage plus frees up some room for a desk or whatever else you may want in there. My boys' closet only has some coats, their button down shirts & a basket for their shoes. I fit all their board games, a couple of their blankets & a few other random toys in there. I don't hang up t-shirts or pants. The dresser & beds are plenty of space for all their clothing.

As far as guests. Personally I wouldn't take up space that we could use here for a guest who might stay periodically throughout the year. My family is all out of town. Some stay at a hotel, some stay here when they visit. We have a pull out couch & (tall) queen mattresses. We can pull out the couch or blow up a mattress, give up our bed... it doesn't matter. Granted we don't have too many visitors at once, and for not more than a weekend. But to me they can camp out in the living room. I wouldn't have my kids room also be a guest room. When the kids have sleepovers they do this too. They sleep on the floor in sleeping bags, use the couch, the mattresses, sleep outside in a tent in the summer time. Whatever they want. They don't need to camp out in their rooms.

I'm sorry I can't suggest a store for you & I don't know your budget. Like I said we searched high & low. Some places are outrageous, some are just so cheap. So you may just have to look & look. And you, like we had to, have to purchase 2 at the same time. It can get pricey. So it was much cheaper for my husband to build them, and better quality & much nicer. Maybe start your search at larger furniture stores in your area. I know here we have Bassett, The Dump... The room store. You may just have to go search a style you like, then narrow down stores by your price range. Good luck!!

Trundles are kind of a pain.. we have one with our daughter's bed.. .and well, it has NEVER been used.

And as your boys get older and/or have friends over or guests... they can just use a cot or sleeping bag or inflatable bed. That's part of the fun!

Bunk beds... as they get older, they may outgrow it. And yes desks for each of them as well as a shelving/storage shelves for their "desk" stuff and studying/books/tablets/pencils/desk accessories and room on their desk for a computer (which when they get older they will need for schoolwork), places to put their papers etc. That would be a better investment, in the long run, for the boys. Versus "guest beds".
Think long term... what they would need once they start school... so it can last a long time and grow with them. Meanwhile, if you get things according to having guests/friends over, twice a year, and purchase "beds" for only that reason, it won't be used most of the year... and will sit idle. ie: money sitting idle.

And if using their room, for out of town guests... well, where will the boys sleep? And, as they get older, they may not want to give up their rooms for guests. A room is a special/private place for a child, then as a teenager. It is their sanctuary.

The rooms are primarily what? A guest room, or the boys room? Kids need to know that... and as they get older.

Get what your boys need and will grow with. even college kids sleep in twin sized beds.

All the best,
Susan
