Bassinet Recommendations

I'm expecting a baby at the end of this month and I'm interested in buying a bassinet. I don't want to spend too much -- maybe up to $200? -- but I also don't want something flimsy. I'll just be using it to have the baby sleep in the master bedroom with my husband and me for the first few months. Any suggestions/recommendations?

What can I do next?

I had a Precious Moments Bassinet from Delta Enterprises. It retails for about $50, more or less, and I was glad I didn't spend a ton of money on it. It was lightweight, I moved it from room to room with me. In reviews from others, there were complaints the wheels did not move freely but I had no problems on the area rug in my room or the hardwood floor in my living room. If I was having another child, I would definitely keep it for next time. For my first kids, I had a Graco pack n play that had a bassinet and that worked well also.

Personally, I would go for either a Pack N Play next to your bed, a regular crib set up next to your bed, a Co-Sleeper (side-carred to your bed) or a "snuggle nest" type co-sleeper in your bed. We have an Arms Reach Co-Sleeper that we used for the first 6 months of my daughter's life, and I think it was just right. Be careful to make sure whatever bassinett you get is safe; there have been some really bad accidents with babies in a couple of models recently that have been recalled. New ones should be safe, but if you get a used one you will need to check carefully with the CPSC.

Hi Erin:

We had a moses basket for our son that had a stand. It was so convenient because I could take the basket around the house wherever I needed the baby to be. For the first 6 weeks, my son wouldn't sit in his bouncy seat or swing. So, he was either held or in the moses basket.

I don't know where you live but I bought the most adorable basket at Hoohobber's on Elston in Chicago. They have so many beautiful fabrics to choose from and the owner/ woman who works in the store was amazing. Here is the link if you are interested. You can also order online.

P.S. looks like they are 20% off until 4/26.

All the best to you,
A.

I wouldn't spend that much on a bassinet, before you know it your baby will be in the crib. Just don't do what I did. I had the crib and the babies room all set up, but hadn't bought a bassinet yet. Well, my water broke at 36 weeks. Guess where I was the day I came home from the hospital, at Target buying a bassinet. I really wanted to pick it out myself. This was 10 years ago, but the thing I loved was it was small, folded up so I could move it around the house easily and I could put it on the floor next to my bed. Super easy for night feedings! I've also heard many buy the pack n play with the bassinet on top so it serves two purposes. They didn't make pack n plays like that when I got mine.

We used a pack n play with a bassinet insert. It was the perfect size for when our babies were small and then as they got too big for the bassinet insert we used the pack n play as a bed when we traveled. We used it for my first son until he was almost two years old. If you don't have room for the full sized version in your master bedroom i know they have mini versions available too. Even if you end up going with an actual bassinet i still recommend the pack n play for a travel bed...it's wonderful!

The Amby sleep hammock is pretty compact, about the size of a bassinet, but you can use it up to 6 or 8 months. We loved ours - look into it if your budget is that high. It's also easily portable for vacations.
