My child has been barfing a lot and I don't know what to do. She's five years old, and I don't want to take her to the doctor because she might just have the flu. This has been going on for 3 weeks. What can I do with my child to help her?

What can I do next?

I don't get why some people come onto Mamapedia to ask questions about serious health/sickness issues about their children.....go to the pediatrician...geez!

Even if it's the flu, if it's been 3 weeks, she needs to see a doctor. It's very unlikely to be the flu if it's lasted that long, however.

Three weeks is way too long unless she's just gagging mucus in the mornings after a coughing spell. Actually three weeks would be long for that, too. She could get dehydrated if she's not already. If you don't have a pediatrician the new Cook Children's Southlake location is a beautiful facility. You could take her there.

Three weeks is a long time for any child to be having this...however you haven't given much information, does she do this several times a day? only in the morning? after she eats? Has this been the only time it started, have you changed anything in her diet recently? vitamins? She may have acid reflux if it's after eating food or a certain food she may be eating. Either way every time she throws up she is bringing acids from her stomach back up her throat and it could cause damage to her tissues & possibly scar tissue to form. Without additional information it's hard to say. If you can pin point where it started (any change in food or what have you been doing differently) then you can hopefully help her stop this. Since it has been going on for a while and you really don't know what you have done any different, I would at least have a doctor examine her. Best wishes to you!

I'm just wondering why you wouldn't take her to the doctor even if it is "just the flu"?

Three weeks is too long for anybody to be barfing. It's time to see the doctor; it could be so many things like sickness or food allergy. Nobody likes to barf! Fix it!

oh my goodness, take her to the DR! Even Flu needs medication! But she is probably dehydrated and that alone can lead to other serious medical conditions like her kidneys shutting down. Don't wait any longer!!

I will have to agree with ALL the other responses. From mom to mom, 3 weeks is way too long for consistant vomiting. It could be something pretty serious. Dehydration is extreamly serious. The stomache flu doesn't last longer then a week and 1 week is a long time for the flu. I urge you to get her to the doctor asap. Alot of damage can be happening. Good luck!

My daughter had the stomach flu and continued to vomit occasionally for the next 3 or 4 weeks. I took her to the doctor and he thought it was acid reflux. He said a young child can have problems with acid reflux after having the stomach flu. I gave her regular Tums, not the extra strength. I gave them to her in the morning and before bed and if she needed during the day she would ask. I don't know how often your daughter is getting sick, but my daughter would vomit mostly in the morning or at night a couple of time a week. Afterwards, she was perfectly fine. She had no other symptoms of illness. Also, she told me that her throat had a burning feeling sometimes. After I started giving her the Tums she did not vomit again.
