My favorite alternative is ice cream cones... Use the ones with the flat bottoms, stand them up in the muffin tin, and fill the ice cream cones with the cake batter and bake. If you mound, or pipe on a lot of frosting, they end up looking like an ice cream cone.
As a plus, kids seem to love these, and because it is all edible you don't have to worry about little ones eating paper!
