Bad Reaction to Immunizations

You poor things im going through immunusation hell at the moment too. My daughter had a reaction similar to that when she had her first DTAP/Hib/Polio shot at about a month old. Her leg went bright red and swelled up and she screamed. I was advised to give her some tylenol and wait. Luckily it went down again by the next day and we didnt get the blister thing. I was dreading her second set of shots but everything was ok. Ive just recently found out that she is missing some vaccinations (we just moved here and wern't offered some of the shots you have here) we've been trying to catch up and i can appreciate how awful it is giving jabs to chlldren now they are older (shes over 2). Cant wait until shes caught up and we can stop going to the docs! Hope it all clears up.

Take him to his doctor. If you go in, under Patient's Bill of Rights, he has to be seen that day... you may have to wait a long time, but it is that or go to something like a Med-7. Some Wal-Marts have a Quick-Health office. They cost $49 to see the doctor. Good luck!

The federal gov't provides reparations ($$) to families whose children have complication from immunizations. I hope your son is feeling better. When mine was 6mos he got a hard lump at the injection site and a blister and the lump stuck around for months and months. He even took my hand and made me rub at it so I know it was still uncomfortable for him. It turns out he's allergic to eggs (which we found out via blood test) and almost all the shots are cultured in egg. You might look into getting a referral to an allergist so you know if future immunizations will need to be the very expensive non-egg variety :<

You poor thing. That's scary. I have only read of experiences like this, I would see the doctor and make sure they make note of his reaction. Then I would discuss spacing out his vaccinations a little bit. Every childs immune system is different. It might have been the combination of these specific or the amount of shots at once that was just too hard on his system for some reason. Some docs aren't very open to changing the vax schedule, but you're the mom & that's your call to make. As a precaution I would watch him closely for any kind of neurological effects in the next week or so. I'm not sure if you're open to it or have access to a homeopath or not but I have read fabulous results in vaccine reactions for little ones. I know you're about to have a new addition to the family, I imagine you don't have energy or hormone balance for any of this! Strength, Health & blessings to you & your family!

I would take him back to the doctor. after seeing your post i googled the recalled vaccination and the symptoms. they were a bump or abcess near the injection site. if your doctor doesn't want to do anything about it contact the CDC about it. hope all turns out well.

I would definitely call the doctor again. That sounds very serious and scary. Sometimes doctors think parents overreact and call about every tiny little thing. Please post advice on how this turns out, I have never had or heard of an experience like this. And I believe your doctor would not give 4 vaccines at one time if they thought anything adverse was going to happen.

Although I made the choice to greatly delay some immunizations,and completely forego others I certainly felt disrespected when women tried to push their decison on me! YOU GO GIRL!!! L.

Late last week I read on SFgate.com that Hib vaccines were recalled by the manufacturer.

I think with all the MRSA going on I would probably get him in ASAP just in case, and I think it would ease your mind also and I would not let the receptionist make an appointment for a week or so I would have it that day. May be just a rection or nothing at all. I pray all is well with your baby. I too had to get my shots all over again because my records were lost in a fire at a wharehouse that the public health kept the records at and when I got the shot my arm swelled up I had a very big red round hot to the touch and tender mark on my arm. I did not have a blister but it was my body reacting to the shots. The swelling went down after about 3 days. But with your little one it is best to consult with your doctor and if the blister gets bigger or has pus out of it they can culture it. please let me know what happens when you go to doctor.

I would definitely taken him back in and find out about the vaccine. Maybe take with a list of vaccines that were recalled and check it there with the doctor?

I'd rather go and be a pest about it over nothing than delay and wish I'd gone sooner. It's not worth stressing about. Your the mom, you know better than the doctor if something is wrong.

P.S. I have two vaccine injured children!!!Hope I can help!!! The bottom line is that vaccination is not about health but it is about MONEY for the Big Pharmas... We have lived for ages without vaccines and no one dies of chicken pox, or measels...all they get is some fever blisters and a fever that can be controlled!!! And that is natural immunization...what they are doing is all in the name of MONEY!!! It is a SKAM!!! A big lie!!!

We do not vaccinate. You need to make sure that this reaction is reported to the Vaccine Adverse Events Reporting System (VAERS)http://vaers.hhs.gov/. There is so much "stuff" in vaccines - formaldehyde, antibiotics, material from aborted fetal tissue (Hep A) - and to get all of it at once, it's difficult to tell what your child might have been reacting to. If you decide to continue with vaccinations, you will want to get one shot at a time. Yes, he'll be jabbed more. But at least if he does get sick again, at least you'll know why. DTaP is a highly reactive vaccine, so that might be one you want to suspend. In any case, I hope your son fully recovers from his illness. We don't vaccinate our children so I can't offer any advice; however, I did read an article recently that there has been a recall of some of the Hib vaccines due to infection. You might want to find out from your doctor the batch number of the vaccine your toddler received and check the CDC website or ask your doctor to investigate to see if there's a small chance that your child received one that should've been recalled. The article said that some other bacteria had been introduced into the vaccine and could cause a more serious adverse reaction than one would normally expect to see. I didn't pay a whole lot of attention since it doesn't affect my children in any way. I just noticed it and was thankful that I don't have to worry about it for my own children.

keep an eye on it and if it, or he, gets worse, go to the doctor. it's normal to get reactions with vaccines. in the future, i recommend never, never getting more than one immunization shot at a time. space them out with at least a month in between; this reduces the chance of adverse reaction and if there is a reaction, at least lets you know for sure which shot caused it so you can decide if you want to do boosters of that shot in the future.

I'd for sure try to get into your ped's office and tell them you plan to find a new one if they can't get you in on an emergency appointment or reschedule a well baby check up with someone else.

Each time I have a problem come up, as long as I call somewhat early in the morning, they always get my son in that day...sometimes within an hour or two because they keep open slots for emergencies. Plus, I know our ped works late because she's called us at 7pm to give us results on a test!! (and they weren't even bad results!)

I'd be totally freaking out in your shoes even if they were telling me everything was fine so if you need to go in for some resassurance... then you should be able to. Be persistant!!

If doctors actually documented all of the side effects and complaints parents had after immunizations- there might be more skepticism AND research about them. Unfortunately immunizations are the bread and butter for pediatritians. I hope your babe is alright.
We dont vaccinate our kids but I would check recalls on CDC website. Good luck getting your doc to own any wrong doing.

Hi, M.. Not too cause you more anxiety, but yes I think you have to take your baby back to the doctor. I just heard a recall of some immunization for baby sorry I can't remember exactly what, but I heard it was not properly sterilized and the symptoms are the ones you mentioned with your baby. I believe the recall was in the news late last week or early this week. Good luck!

I just wanted to weigh in and say this one thing:
No one knows your son like you do. No one has your instincts. If your gut tells you to go back to the doctor's then go back. The worse that can happen is that they'll tell you it's nothing.

I find that as a parent I like to go by the "if there's a doubt, then there's no doubt" school of thought. I'd rather have the doctor tell me that I'm over reacting than have an ER doc ask me why I didn't go in sooner.

That said, I hope that your little boy is feeling better!
