My 5 mos. old daughter has a really bad eczema. It's all started to show on her ears and cheeks last month. And, now I found these dry spots all over her thighs and back. Pediatrician recommended Eucerin aquaphor healing ointment and Aveeno fragrance free Baby lotion. We also purchased a humidifier to bring in some moisture to the room. Still, my duaghter still scratches her face and thighs because they are very itchy. What else I could try?? Thanks in advance.

So What Happened?

My daughter's eczema problem was getting worse. On top of that she constantly feels very itchy–especially the face and thigh-which always wake her up. During the 6 month immunization, the pediatrician thought maybe she has some kind of allergic reaction to the formula?? She has been having Emfamil Lipil for like 4-5months. It was a disaster to switch to Nutrimegen–tastes awful!! and needless to say it's the most expensive formula in the market!! She refused to take it. Then, we gave her Similac Isomil, soy based formula. Both of her upper eye lids were swellen within couple hours–allergic reaction. Anyone have similar experience like this??

Try apple cider vinegar, a large capful in the bath water every day. My youngest daughter and I had rashes and many yeast infections until 1p years ago when I was told about this. I have not had 1 yeast infection, nor do we get rashes. Also great for getting red of poo; chlorine and salt water, all of which is part of our daily lives. Good luck.

Hi E.,
I am totally with the first response.
I am so proud to say that i shop at a company that is free of all that garbage that causes all that kind of stuff, so definitely look into switching your shopping over to safer products.
It's not just about the cream you use on your families skin, it's also about the cleaning products you use.
Think about how many hours we are asleep and our skin comes into contact with the sheets, right?
The cleaning products that we use on the sheets TOTALLY impact our skin and our health.
I highly recommend you getting in contact with her or me so we can help educate you on some safer options that will save you time, save you money, AND save your families health!
Good luck with it!

my son has/had eczema and at the time we were nursing - so i did an elimination diet to help and we used pure organic shea butter. the one time we used a cortizone type cream he got sick and our homeopath thinks it was b/c skin conditions are oftentimes your body's way of ridding something in your
system - when you use a cortizone or something similar you are
suppressing whatever is trying to get out. so we went the shea
butter - minimal bath, all natural product route. got a lot of our stuff from www.stolatorganics.com and www.naturesgift.com.

here's more info about stolat:
StoLat Organics is committed to bringing you the best all natural and healthy alternatives to today's abundance of commercial products.

This home-grown company developed from a personal need to seek out products that were not laden with synthetic colors, fragrances, preservatives and fillers. When our children developed severe eczema and allergies, we found that nature provided us with amazing alternatives to pharmaceuticals. We are not extremists, however, there is a definite place for mainstream medicine, and we were just waiting until all of our natural options were exhausted….and luckily, we did not get to that point. We developed Shea Butter based salves to control their eczema and calm down the dry, inflamed skin. Even now, our son has a small jar of salve in his school desk
for times when he feels the urge to itch. It makes us proud to raise our children with knowledge and respect for what is around us in nature. This, coupled with our concern for cruelty-free and environmentally safe, renewable resources blossomed into what is StoLat Organics.

The name, StoLat Organics, as you may be wondering, comes from the Polish wishing of wellness and prosperity. The literal translation, as used for a toast or a song, is "May you live a hundred years". That is what we wish for all of you, and may you celebrate every moment!

If there is a product that you are currently using that you would like to replace with something more healthy and earth-friendly, please drop us an e-mail and we may have just the solution.

There is an absolutley INCREDIBLE organic pharmacy that specializes in baby and pregnant woman. It is called Green Cradle. It's on Ventura Blvd. in Studio City. They are beyond knowledgeable. My friend's son had it so bad that he would rub it raw- they fixed him right up. She uses something called ecza salve. It is really mild and not greasy at all. I use it also around my daugher's mouth which is where she tends to break out depending on what foods she eats. Definitely give them a call or stop in- you will be soooooo glad that you did!

My daughter had the same problem and still does at five years old. My pediatrician told me to only bathe her every second or third day and never recommended her to be tested for allergies. What I've come to find out from the allergist is that eczema before two years of age is usually a sign of a food allergy. Once I cut eggs out of my daughter's diet the eczema dramatically improved. Have you started her on cereal yet? Wheat? What I found out from the dermatologist is to bathe her every day and use a heavy cream moisturizer within three minutes of getting out of the bath. Hope this helps.

Wow, you've gotten a lot of responses - how do you choose? I'll add to your list - although I'm sure you're overwhelmed already!

Albolene (it's a makeup remover), worked better than Aquaphor for my kids. http://www.albolenecleanser.com/Pages/Albolene_Facts

Flaxseed oil in the diet helps too, but takes up to several months to get going.

Vinegar in the bath water is a great suggestion too - kills bacteria that forms on the skin.

Eczema is an allergic reaction, from the inside out - and you could drive yourself MAD trying to figure out what is causing it. The best thing to do is to treat symptoms and see if things like dairy, eggs, and other obvious foods could be contributing. I had my son tested for food allergies and they all came back negative - my dermatologist recommended the above treatments (along with a capful of bleach or a 1/2 cup of hydrogen peroxide in the bath once or twice a week).

Try not to use anything with "lotion" on the label as this just sits on top of the skin and won't absorb into the skin.

Most children grow out of their eczema by 4 or 5 years old, but eczema can also be a sign of other allergies to come. My older son, who had eczema on his legs and feet, now has seasonal allergies and sometimes bouts with asthma. It generally follows suit.

Good luck - I hope you find something that helps.

Oh, and I also like the Aveno itch ointment for topical use.

HI E.,
My daughter has had eczema ever since she was a new born. I've tried things from cremes, lotions, and soaps like Dove (unscented). doesn't really work by the way. i even changed her laundry detergents to unscented, even her fabric softener. Dove soap hasn't really worked, but now she uses Meleluca Soap. They have all natural products and you know what? Her eczema is no longer a problem. Of course after she baths i rub Cetaphil lotion on her which helps really well too. The soap isn't sold in stores though, its through catalog stuff, so if you get a hold of a member...its a good thing!

HI E..
My son also had really bad skin as a child and we had a heck of a time keeping enough lotion on him to keep him happy and from scratching his skin off. When he was a bout 2 years old I learned that it was being caused from a exposure to chemicals. Almost all store brand or name brand products contain chemicals such as bleach, phosphates, formaldehyde, ammonia and petrolium based solvents. For instant most laundry detergents contain petroleum solvents that don't rinse completely clean from your clothes so when you sweat they reactivate and are absorbed into the skin, J&J put formaldehyde in almost ALL their products, yes even all their baby care line.
I"m not trying to scare you I just think it's important to know that this isn't just something your baby has it's something that is being caused.
All this to say I switched my home over to a completely toxin free home 2 years ago and my sons skin suddenly cleared up. And we no longer have any skin issues.
It's really easy to buy the products you just order them on line and they ship to you and they are even cheaper then store brands.

if you are interested I would love to give you more information as I was so excited that they worked so well, I know work for the company, helping Moms keep their families healthy!!!

I want to second the recommendation of using Renew lotion made by Melaleuca.

I have been a long time sufferer of Eczema. I would break out on lower legs and elbows. With my 3rd child I got the worst case on my breasts. I nursed and itched and bled and nursed and scratched and bled. I was committed to nursing but the dermatologist wanted to give me a topical steroid. Making it impossible for me to nurse.

A friend at the same time was telling me about the lotion. I tried it. And it made a huge difference. I also changed out my laundry soap. My skin is much happier.

I also use the lotion on my sons bottom to ward off any rashes including diaper rash. The tea tree oil does a number on that stuff.

Best wishes for you daughter E. I really feel for you. Our babies are our world and to see them hurt is very hard.

Blessings to you!

Hi! I'm a mother of 3 who all had eczema at one time or other. My daughter had it so bad and i tested her for food allergies at 6 months old (the skin test at an allergists office). It was very helpful to find out the foods that she was sensitive to--i was breastfeeding and had to eliminate those foods from my diet til i weaned her 5 months later)

Aquaphor is really good. If u give it time it should work. But we also tried egyptian magic (sold at healthfood grocery stores/pharmacies). It is made from bee pollen and seemed to completely clear up the eczema. Talk to your pediatrician about it. Some kids who may have bee allergies shouldn't use it apparently b/c it introduces the bee pollen into the system. We used it w/ no problem and it really worked. You can research it. Good luck!

The same thing happened when my son was this age. It was terrible. He was itchy all the time. When someone would pick him up, he would immediately start rubbing his face or arm on their shoulder. Here's what our pediatrician recommended. I would check with yours first to see if your daughter should be getting the hydrocortizone...

We did this twice a day. Set up towel (we usually did this on the bed closest to the bathtub). Take lids off of hydrocortizone (Target brand, over the counter) and Eucerin/Aquaphor. Give baby a quick lukewarm bath. Place baby on towel - do not dry her off! Quickly rub in a coat of hydrocortizone on the red, itchy spots. Follow quickly with the ointment/lotion. There are two tricky parts. First, you must be really quick. The hope is to 'lock' in the water under the cortizone & lotion. Baths can be very drying to the skin and make the itching worse, that's why you have to move quickly. Second, the ointment will not seem like it's really being absorbed into the skin (the whole oil and water thing). But if you're patient and keeping rubbing, the ointment will eventually sink it. It's a messy process and we really did need to do this 2 and sometimes 3 times a day. But it seemed to help!

In addition, we also sublet our cats to my mom for a year and tried to reduce other allergens like dust mites. Now our son is almost three. He only needs one bath a day and an occasional rub down with the hydrocortizone and ointment.

Good luck!

Eczema often has food triggers. You can find out what they by taking out all the possible trigger foods and replacing them one at a time to see what flareups occur when. This process can yield really interesting results (with potentially life long benefits) but it takes a long time. You have to wait about 10 days with each new food to really know if there is a significant, reliable difference. Also, Eucerin is a petroleum based line. This can aggravate eczema with heat rash and reduced breathability for the skin. Something like 20% of petroleum based products also have a dioxane in them accidentally included as a byproduct. This is carcinogenic (highly) and best to avoid possible exposure. Its best to use a non-petroleum moisturizer with healing agents in it. LIke zinc. Since she is young, you can get away with using a white zinc product on her and pass it off as an animal costume. I'm kidding. My point is that zinc really helps alot, and fast. The problem is that zinc is white and it doesn't look so normal. For sure you should try it. Also, propalis and noni are two ingredients that work really well to soothe irritated skin. aloe is also great if you are willing to reapply it very often. last key is probiotics. these help balance the system from within. a couple of companies make infant probiotic supplements that (if your doctor approves) can make a tremendous difference by helping to balance the body's ph and by preventing infections that can lead to all kinds of skin havoc as a side effect. feel free to ask me anything you want about skin. its my obsession and profession.

Call your doctor and ask if there is a prescription cream they can suggest. My son used Elidel and a stronger steroid cream for bad breakouts and hardly EVER uses the steriod cream.

Eczema is something you need to keep ahead of. Eucerin Cream for during the day. Slather Aquaphor (the ointment stuff) all over the body before nigth time and let it work overnight.

No perfumed creams or bath soaps. We use Aveeno eczema bath soap and only bath when you need to.

The Aquaphor ointment and Eucerin cream treatments are daily things.

You may need some prescription cream to get it under control if it's itching your baby really badly. Once we got our son's under control, we keep up with the daily treatment and his skin is soothed on a regular basis.

Hi E.- both my kids have the form of exema that affects the scalp and ears and my daughter has extremely dry skin. Strait up aquaphor as many people have mentioned is wonderful, you can rub your baby all over with it. Ever since my daughter was born I have rubbed her ears, cheeks, forehead body...you name it! Talk to your pediatrician about using anything stronger but the hydrocortisone mix works well too. Aveeno also sells oatmeal bath products which are very helpful and can be used on an infant. Just dissolve into your daughters bath- it is very soothing to the skin. If your daughter has it around her ears she may have it on her scalp later on. My pediatrician recommended Selsun Blue shampoo which I use periodically to help- (my kids are 3 & 8) for now just treat for cradle cap. Good luck! T.

Hi E.,
My daughter had really bad eczema when she was about your daughter's age, and she still suffers from extremely dry skin. Our pediatrician recommended using over the counter coritzone cream, followed by vaselin. She even sent us to a dermatologist who recommended the same thing, and suggested that vaselin is the best cream to use for dry skin. She said people do not use vaselin becuase they don't like the feel of it on their skin, but it is acutally the Best thing you can use. To make the story short, this is how we treated my duaghter's ezcema:

1-After bath, do not dry her skin, just pad her with towel, and IMMEDIATELY put on the vaselin to capture the moisture in he skin.

2- To treat her ezcema and relieve your daughter from itching, apply Cortizone 10 (1% Hydrocortisone anti-itch ointment, over the counter) over the itchy areas; however,do not apply this cream on the genital areas for diaper rash unless recommended by a doctor.(we had to do that once in the emergency room as she had such a bad diaper rash we had to take her to see the doctor!)

3-Follow the cortizone cream with vaseline and apply both creames generosly.

4-Creams like Eucerin and such have a component called Lanolin which can in some cases make the rash worse, so if I were you I would use vaseline only.

Dealing with eczema can be very frustrating, and it will take a while for your daughter to grow out of it. But hang in there and it will pass. Watch for the skin behind her ears for splitting, they happended quite often for our daughter and they are very painful.

Hope this helped.

Oh, the flashbacks! The aquaphor is the best, but it takes time. You have to use it at least twice a day until you get it under control. You dr. should also give you an rx for hydracortisone. Putting that on the bad patches does wonders because is curves the itching, which makes things worse. My babes both wore socks on their hands at night because they were scratching in their sleep. Thank goodness for the time of year, because long sleeves and pants are a must. At this age they don't always know how to scratch where it actually itches, so they will go for their face or head, etc. That's why keeping nails short and hand covered when you can is a good idea.

Next, find out what's causing the break-outs. It's usually an allergy to something. My kids were allergic to milk so we tried soy formula, but they were also allergic to it. So we finally used Alimentium formula, which is pre-digested milk formula (don't ask!). It smelled and tasted horrible, but they quickly adjusted and the skin healed immediately.

I'm rambling now, so let me know if you want any more info. I have a ton on this subject.

Good luck.

Hi E.,
My daughter also had eczema, starting as early at 2 mos on her face. What worked for us was hydrocortisone cream (0.5%). I rub a little bit of the cream on and then I apply a lotion (Aveeno or Eucerin) on top. I do it right after she has fallen asleep, so she couldn't rub the cream into her eyes. And when she woke up, the rash has disappear or improved greatly. As the day goes on, the rash will come back and I'll do the treatment again. It took a couple of months for it the rash to go away for good. Anyway, hang in there. I know it's hard to see your baby in such discomfort but the rash WILL go away.

Hi there,

Have you ever heard of Arbonne? It is a swiss skin care line with all herbal and botanical products. They have an entire baby line and I have seen before and after shots of babies with eczema and how it dramatically improved. I would recommend the baby wash and the lotion. If you want to see the pictures I can email them. I can show you how to get the products. I can also get you some samples if you want to try it first. You can email me direct at ____@____.com.

Hi E. - eczema is such a tough one especially for little kids. I've had it since I was a child. I now use a product called Renew Lotion that is excellent on dry skin, eczema and psoriasis. It was tested against Eucerin and outperformed it on every level. I've included some information below and can share a lot more information if you like. Just let me know. I do also want to give you heads up that you'll want to change your soap and laundry detergent to make sure they are chemical free. The company I work with that makes the Renew also makes all non-toxic personal care and cleaning products and they are very well priced. All the best, C.

Renew’s proprietary formula uses T36-C5™ brand Melaleuca Oil, Malaysian glycerin, and allantoin to act as a transparent barrier. This barrier locks in skin’s moisture and protects it from the harsh winter environment. The penetrating power of T36-C5 Melaleuca Oil naturally soothes dry skin, while Malaysian glycerin helps attract moisture without clogging pores. Renew also includes allantoin. Created from the natural herb comfrey, allantoin helps condition irritated skin. This powerful combination of ingredients helps Renew go on easy without feeling greasy. Plus, the long-lasting protection stays in place and helps skin help itself.

"My son Jalen has severe eczema as well. From birth he was first given Elocon for it and then prescribed Eldel. They both burn when you apply it to their delicate skin and he had to stay out of the sun or the creme would lighten his skin. When I became a Melaleuca Customer I was amazed how changing the laundry detergent and using MelaPower, Kola Pals body wash, and the Renew lotion, has cleared up his skin tremendously. Since washing all our clothes, including my 10 month old, no "itchies". If he has a small breakout, from sweating now that it is the summertime, I rub a little Melaleuca oil on the patch and it goes away the next day." Aisha B.

Are you nursing her? Try to cut out dairy, nuts and any other allergy type foods from your diet if so. That worked for me and my girls.

Good Luck!

My daughter started with eczema around the same time. We tried so many things. Make sure her nails are cut very short so she can't scratch herself so much. Aveeno baby body wash has been really good for her. Also, we use Cetaphil lotion. It's very mild and does not sting. Our pediatrician also prescribed Elcon cream, which is a steroid cream. We use it sparingly only when the outbreak is really bad. We also use a cream called Mymix. It's also prescribed by your Dr. Make sure you are using a laundry detergent with no colors or fragrance. That seems to cause flair ups. Since it's on her back and thighs, she could be rubbing on a certain blanket or the carpet. The humidifier should help. Hope this helps. My daughter is now 3 and we have her skin under control, but it is a daily routine lotions.

along with the lotions and humidifier , havee you changed your laundry soap we use dye free perfume free soap and sent free dryer sheets, and when we use soap on our kids we use sensitive skin dove. and only use it every 3 days or so. we rinse them off every night but use warm water and lotion them right after in a thick layer of eucernin, ( i hate aquaqphor too greasy ) if we see our kids scratching we put a cool wash cloth on it for a few minutes to soothe the area and lotion it up. it's just a battle. I hope you win..

Arbonne International has Baby Care Herbal Diaper Rash Creme that is better than anything a dermatologist will recommend, it works when nothing else does. It's $14. and can be purchased online at:

https://secure.myarbonne.com/arbonne/jillkramer.nsf/p1/1?...

Arbonne suggests using Arbonne Baby Care Herbal Diaper Rash Cream if diaper rash or chafing is present. You may also want to apply the cream at the first sign of redness and apply the cream each time you change the baby’s diaper. As a preventative measure, you may want to apply cream to the diaper area at bedtime when exposure to a wet diaper could be extended. The Diaper Rash Cream is also great for all kinds of challenges – from insect bites to small rashes – this product will help relieve the uncomfortable feeling associated with irritated skin. People of all ages will benefit from its properties.

Ask your doctor about a prescription for Elidel or Elicon. Also, about using hydrocortisone. My son has eczema as well, and these have worked for us. Use with caution though, they are steroids. Also, ask/look into food allergies. They can co-exist with eczema. Good luck.

After bath i lather her with Johnson and Johnson baby oil gel later i add the lotion and i also use the Johnson and Johnson stick|(looks like baby deodorant) throughout the day when she starts scratching. sounds like a lot and it is but it helps. Good luck.

I used Aveeno "anti-itch" lotion. It is medicated, and does not smell too good, but it helps alot. Cortisone creme, over the counter, will take the itch away too. it is a steroid, so Dr's don't recommend prolonged use, but it works. For baths: don't use soap! Use a cetaphil, or aveeno non-soap wash. I also heard dryer sheets are not recommended for eczema. Hopefully she will outgrow it...

At this stage it is probably diet. Try to do an elimination diet if she's taking formula or baby food, and if it's only breastmilk, then you should do the elimination diet on yourself.

ALso, I would consult a homeopathic physician, which is what I used to cure a lifelong eczema problem related to digestive allergies.

If you're using Johnson's baby soaps, shampoos and/or lotions, discontinue it-it's full of perfumes that irritate the skin. Instead, use Dove sensitive skin body wash (liquid soap), but remember that it's not "tear free" so be careful when you wash the baby's hair. Some babies react to certain foods-are you feeding her formula and baby foods yet? If you're doing baby food, stay away from the meats for now-the protein tends to irritate the skin more. There is tons of information on babycenter.com that I read when my 15-month-old had it on his cheeks. Citrus fruits will flair it up too. If you do any juice at all (after 6 months) make sure it's not orange juice and dilute it with 1/2 water 1/2 juice. There are cortisone creams you can use, but talk to you doctor first. Baby skin is very fragile and you have to make sure you use the right percentage of cortisone (whether it be 0.5%, 1%, etc. is up to the doctor. There are prescription strength creams for really dry patches that are also up to your doctor. It sounds like you've made some positive steps already. Hopefully your baby will outgrow it....most do by the time they are 2. My son had an allergy test (partial one) when he was 1.

Also, this is VERY important-pay attention to the laundry soap you're using. Use Dreft or Arm & Hammer clear (no dyes are perfume at all) on the baby's clothes and YOUR clothes. Get dryer sheets with no dyes and perfumes as well. They are sometimes more expensive, but worth it so the baby doesn't suffer as much. You have to treat your clothes this way too-because you hold the baby all the time. Make sure you wash any new outfits before the baby wears it-they put a lot of chemicals on them to make them look nice in the store.

Another trick the allergist taught us was to put the lotion, prescription, or lotion on immediately after a bath (Don't let the baby soak in soapy water-wash and rinse and remove immediately). If you put the lotion on when the pores are still open from the bath, it will absorb into the skin better. So as soon as you towel dry the baby-put the lotion on within 30 seconds of getting out of the bath. It works great.

If the baby scratches her skin, make sure her nails are clipped all the time and clean. You just don't want to risk infection. You can also buy little mittens for the baby to wear during the day and at night (until she's old enough to just take them off anyhow).

There is also a newer soap from Aveno bath (comes in a bottle) that has oatmeal it it-works great and says it helps with eczema just as much as chicken pox). It's a tan bottle with a blue cap and you can get it at Walmart or pretty much any store.

There are some very good homeopathic remedies for this condition. Purchase a lotion that is all natural...like the baby products that Weleda makes. Sway toward foods that create an alkalyne body (keep PH balanced in your daughter's body!)...go onto the web to find out what foods are best for that.

I had this problem with my son as well. I used those products and also used Aveeno baby wash (I believe Aquafor makes one, too). The rash also went away when I switched him to soy milk. I don't know whether you're breastfeeding/using formula/feeding her solids, but maybe you could look into whether your daughter has any allergies and whether soy formula is an option. My son drinks regular milk now and doesn't seem to have any problems with eczema; I still use the mild soaps but I think in general that's good for all kids' skin.

Hi E., my name is Dawn and I have a 10 month old. Arbonne baby lotion is truly amazing and this company gives your money back if not satisfied - plus I can get it for you for 35% off. It's great on my daughters skin and any time she has a rash or itchy spot this lotion is really soothing to her delicate skin. She doesn't have eczema, however, but skin conditions run in my family and one thing that will improve ANY skin condition is cutting out sugars and most yeast products and eating yogurt. Is she breastfeeding? You might want to try watching your sugar and yeast intake - if she's formula feeding try to find one that doesn't have high corn syrup/sugar amounts. You may have to go to a health food store or search online. My email address if you want the lotion and baby wash (keeps her skin from drying out in the bath) is ____@____.com luck!!!

I have a beautiful 10 month old daughter and have been married to my awesome husband for 4yrs - we both work full time trading off baby duties.
