Try SmartMouth mouthwash and toothpaste. It makes a big difference. It can be a bit pricey, but well worth it.
Hi Everyone!
I've had a problem with halitosis (bad breath) for years. I'm never without gum, mints, or breath fresheners, but those don't seem to help. I brush my teeth at least twice per day only to feel my mouth and breath are nasty again after only about 20 minutes. My jaw is getting sore from all the gum chewing. I'm a healthy and clean person, but this just doesn't go away. Have any of you tried any products from your dentist or through the internet for halitosis?
Please help!

Hi- Are you on any medication? My stepdad has the same problem and found out it is because of the medication.
Hi C.,
I had/have this problem too. It started from not flossing. Now I floss daily and dip the floss in a solution called "Closys", which is sold at Walgreen's. If I get lazy with the flossing, the odor comes back. You can also use a water pick and put mouthwash/closys in the water. I also had a root-canal and the cap they put over the tooth needs to be flossed too.
Good luck.

C., I used to do PR for Dr. Harold Katz, he invented a product called Therabreath. His 13 year old daughter used to have bad breath (many years ago) and he was a dentist so he figured out that the bugs that cause bad breath cannot live in oxygen so he invented this great system. Anyway go to therabreath.com. He's been all over the news too so if you google him you should find some good stuff. You can get Therabreath at Meijer, CVS etc.

The above web site shold give you information about your problem. Good luck!

Hi Christina! You received lots of good advice! With as careful as you are about brushing my immediate thought was the internal health. Have you ever heard much about how your body detoxifies and eliminates waste? I help people every day who want to detoxify. If you would like we could have a conversation about what you're going through and see if my resources are a good fit for you.

Hi C.,
Very often bad breath is due to digestion issues. Some of us have slower systems than others.
Something that has worked well at our house is digestive enzymes. You take a capsule 1/2 hour before your meals. I don't even do it every meal and it is still fine. These enzymes help you digest fats and carbs much better. It moves things thru your system very well. You may fine you even lose weight.
Be aware that in about 24 hours or less, you will be going to the bathroom more often. The first couple of days will clean you out and you WILL be surprised. You will NOT be uncomfortable and you will not need to stay home or anything like that.
If you are interested, the brand we use is:
Source Naturals Bio Align
Daily Essential Enzymes
My health food store sells them for 16.65 500mg 120 capsules
Not only will you improve your breath, you'll feel a little lighter if you know what I mean.
Sorry ladies, if there was a little too much detail here. :)
Good luck,
C.
P.S. If you have a film on your tongue, this is a VERY good clue that digestion is indeed your problem. When I use the enzymes, my tongue is very clean naturally.
Hi C.,
I'm a Dental Hygienist and have treated patients with your same situation. It could be a multitude of issues, but the first and foremost issue that could be causing your bad breath is gum disease. I would make sure you have a thorough evalution from you dentist and hygienist. If that doesn't result in anything, it could be a systemic issue. Possibly acid reflux. There are alot of products on the market that actually do work. Most the them that do are prescribed by your dentist and don't readily found over the counter at the drug store. One such product is called Oxyfresh. This product has a toothpaste, mouthrinse, and tongue scrapers that really do work for bad breath. One simple thing you can do now at home is to make sure you brush your tongue after brushing your teeth and go back as far as you can without gagging yourself. I hope this helps a little. But please get checked out by your dentist.
Best of luck.

Have you been checked by your dentist for periodontal disease? If you get a clean bill of health from your dentist, you may have stomach issues that your doc can help you with.

Dear C. S.,
First, if you are a Christian and believe that God is the supreme answer, pray. God has all the best ideas. He even knows you better than you do.
Secondly, I have heard many times over the past many years that bad breath is often caused by stomach or intestinal problems. See your doctor if you can afford to and ask for tests to be performed to rule out some things. Do what the doctor suggests and if you still have bad breath, go back to the doctor and tell him/her. If that doesn't work, get a different doctor and make phone calls to find one that specializes in bad breath. Don't be ashamed or embarrassed. I am sure that there are many, many people with this problem. Be glad that you are willing to try to do something about it. Your friends, relatives, etc. will be so glad when you find the cure. Most of them will be too kind to be honest with you but will be so glad when it is no longer a problem.

You didn't mention flossing. Nothing worse than breath the morning after eating chicken! Maybe you already do that, but if not, do it nightly.
C.,
Have you checked out your tongue at all? I mean stick it out as far as you can and look at the back of it, is it covered with white gunk? That could be the cause of your bad breath. This has happened to me on occasion, and what I did was get a plastic spoon and scrape that gunk off, then every time you brush, brush your tongue too. Hope this helps!
flossing helps too, you didn't mention if you do that or not, make sure if you don't to start.
One of the things that I found helpful with the same problem was a tongue scraper. I would scrape my tongue, floss, and then brush my teeth. I found that this order helped A LOT! Good luck.

When I was 28 I had my tonsils out because they were packed with infection, and had been since I was young. I could often taste the infection and always chewed gum or mints. I have been 5 years now without having that awful taste and it is great. Might be a good idea to check it out.

What does your dentist say? I have a family member with the same problem and the dentist gave him special mouth wash and that seems to help a lot. I would not just try something on the internet, talk to your doctor or dentist. Be safe about this. Good luck.
C.,
There are lots of products through your dentist that you can try. Talk to him/her about this problem. It could be from a few different things like periodontal disease, dry mouth, etc. You can try a toungue cleaner. You wouldn't believe all the gunk that sticks on your tongue.
Hello,
There is a good article at: http://articles.mercola.com/sites/articles/archive/2008/0... (cut and paste)
Oder a lot of times isn't coming from your mouth. Sugar actually feeds bad bacteria (this is a hard one). Bad sinuses can cause it. Poor digestion is another, etc. Read the article above and make sure you read all the way down to the comments from other people and see what works for them. It is split up 3 ways: 1.) Scientific Study 2.) Doctor's comment on the Scientific Study 3.) People's comment on both. I learn more a lot of times from the experience of others than I do from the doctor. A.
My husband has this problem too and he got his tonsils removed due to snoring/strept throat. The doctor mentioned that his tonsils could have been the culprit behind the bad breath too. Do you have the other problems too? I haven't noticed any problems since the surgery..
Have you ever considered getting a colon cleansing (colon hydrotherapy)? Food particles break off and get stuck in the folds of our small intestines as is travels, and that food sometimes stays trapped long enough to begin rotting and the gases that are released from the rotting only have two ways to come out...Burps and toots! :) Some people can have up to 30 pounds of trapped poop in their intestines!
Why don't you research colon hydrotherapy? It will cleanse your intestines, allow your body to absorb nutrients more efficiently, and may even shave 10 or so pounds off of you! And who wouldn't like a flatter stomach? :) And you may even experience an uptick in energy! If you have questions about it, feel free to message me and I'll answer your questions to tbe best of my ability. I've had them before and I've even gotten my husband and a couple of my friends to try it just from the results they see from me!
Hi,
Lots of good advice here. I would also have your regular dentist check for periodonatal disease. It can cause bad breath plus a lot of other things. You then go to a periodontist for treatment.

Hi C.,
I am a nurse, so I tend to think medically. Bear with me if this is long.
I am assuming that you have been to the dentist recently and ruled out dental abcesses or gum disease. If not, GO!
Sometimes bad breath can come from sinus trouble. If you have allergies and/or sinus infections they can give you dreadful breathe. If you are stuffy or headachy a lot, a visit to your doctor is in order.
Some foods have smell that are excreted by your lungs (garlic, onions, etc) so that even if you gargle or brush right after eating, you are still breathing out the smell hours later. Try a blander diet and see if the problem goes away.
Some people have not enough saliva, and their breathe gets rank. If you think that your mouth is dry a lot, a trip to the doctor can help. Look at the side effects (if you don't know, call your pharmacist, they will be glad to tell you) of any medications you take. A lot of them list "dry mouth" as a frequent side effect, and that can be another reason for bad breathe.
Last, but not least, your stomach may be regurgitating. Lots of people have regurgitation, which can give you a kind of poopy diaper smell to your breathe in severe cases. Heartburn or the feeling of food coming back up , or a lot of belching can be signs. Again, talk to your doctor. There are a lot of great medicines available to help with this( the biggies are pepcid, zantac, tegamet, protonix, prilosec, nexium, etc, etc.) Some need a perscription, some are over the counter. Your doctor can help determine which might be right for you if reflux is a problem for you.
Good luck,
L.
Hi, C.!
This sounds like a case for your family doctor, not your dentist. One of my friends had this problem too. It turned out that she had a lower intestinal tract infection (mild enough to never cause discomfort) and that was what was causing the smell. She took some medicine for a week & it went away. Chronic halitosis is usually a symptom of a medical problem and you just need to find the right diagnosis.
Also, drink a ton of water. Gum can sometimes worsen halitosis. (It may temporarily mask the smell but it doesn't have any long-term impact.)
