My husband and I are expecting our first child in September. As we have been discussing babygear, we both agreed that we would like a diaperbag that is a backpack because we think it is most practical for both of us (as it will give us our arms free). Does anyone have a suggestion of a backpack diaperbag that they have used?
I had a back pack diaper bag from l.l. bean or someplace like that. I felt it wasn't big enough and that everything fell to the bottom of the bag never being able to find anything. My favorite diaper bag was a vera bradley bag that was sort of a hobo shaped it had pockets along the sides inside and pockets outside zipper and ones to fit sippy cups. It was blue with bumble bees on it so my husband didn't feel like it was too girlie. It's personal preverence.

Well, I thought I'd want a backpack too but have ended up using the freebie shoulder-strap bag that I got at the hospital when I gave birth to my daughter. It has held up well through two kids. I would wait to buy until you see what you get free at the hospital!

I don't know how much the diaper bags cost that are mentioned below, but I just got a regular BackPack at Target/Walmart? It cost approx. $25.00 and has been in use for 4 years now and is just starting to show signs of wear. It had a zippered top and then about half way down it zippered again so you had two seperate compartments. There were several other zippered areas and side pockets for juice cups or bottles. It cost a lot less than the ones geared for babies if cost is a factor.
Good Luck and congrats!

I have had many, mothership, petunia pickle bottom, back packs, my favorite has been skip hop sling bags! Great storage, color designs or just plain fabric, check out skip hop online, I think it is a great bag for hands free and both parents!

Petunia Pickle Bottom diaper (the square ones) bags are awesome. They include straps for them to be backpacks or regular carrying bags. They also include a changing pad which is attached the bag but can be separated for washing. I love the fact that there is a zipper so that none of my baby's small items fall out. A little pricey, but a GREAT investment. My sister-in-law has used her for all three of her children!

Here's what not to get-the Eddie Bauer one. It never closed properly and didn't fit what we needed. Very impractical.

I have the backpack style bag from One step ahead. And it is HUGE! It's great when we have an all day outing, I have three kids and I can take a change of clothes for each, diapers for the baby, snacks and toys. And I can actually find everything. For me this is not a daily diaper bag. I have four other diaper bags that I use daily and I don't like any enough to recommend. Good luck with your hunt!

I have a great one from Land's End that was pretty reasonable. It has tons of pockets and comes with a huge changing pad that slides into the back of it. I highly recommend it!

I've had TONS of diaper bags, with four kids, we've needed them! I hated the backpack the most! It's too deep and things get lost forever at the bottom!! I personally LOVE the one's with the longer strap that you can sling over your body.
Good luck and congrats!!
Mom to four busy kids! :)

REI makes a great one, we have used that brand for all three kids. The big advantage of the backpack is having the ability to be completely handsfree without a bag on your shoulder swinging around while you deal with a baby. We have also used more traditional diaper bags ocassionally, but I always end up going back to the backpack. Also, its a very neutral bag, not so feminine like the Petunia Pickle bottom ones. And when it gets dirty, you just throw it in the wash.

I used Petunia Picklebottom bags (pricey, but work well.) You can also try to go to bags.com and find a cute backpack type bag and use it as a diaper bag.
Good luck.

Our babysherpa bag is virtually indestructible. We love it.
I just got a Skip Hop Via Backpack because I have 2 kids now and needed more room. It's great and has plenty of room. My only complaint is that it doesn't have a cell phone pocket which I would like. It also has clips on the straps to attach to a stroller. That was very important to me as I have a side by side double stroller. I used to have a Petunia Picklebottom, which was great but don't get the silk material, get the laminate type nylon because the silk started ripping after about 6 months. Nordstrom is awesome and took it back with a full refund but I was still pissed that my $155 dollar diaper bag fell apart. My friend has the pottery barn one that can be a back pack or a messenger bag and she really likes it.

What we have done for all the kids born in my family for the last 10 years is the backpack diaper bag from Lands End. It it great for men and women to carry! We have our last name stiched on it and my husband is a huge White Sox fan it's black and grey and it hols everything for our daughter. Best by far around. My sister still uses hers when kids are sleeping over a grandma's house to pack their clothes. Good luck check it out!

Colombia makes a back pack diaper that's great. I used it for my triplets when they were first born and it was very handy and versatile. I definitely needed both hands free and still do! Now that they're almost two, I need a bigger bag but I still use the back pack for quick trips to the doctor's office or whenever I have to go somewhere with just one child. Colombia also makes a diaper bag that looks like a workout bag - I have that one too. Much bigger and doesn't look feminine so hubby has no problem carrying it! Babies R Us is where I got both of them.
