Back Pain - Kansas City, MO

My husband has been having lower back pain for the past two weeks. He has been going to the chiropractor, who has helped in the past, but he says this time it has become worse, not better. The chiropractor told him he had a bulging disk. Here's my question: where should he go next, since the chiropractor is not helping? I suggested an orthopedic surgeon, but he doesn't think that's the right answer. Any suggestions?

What can I do next?

Did his chiropractor take x-rays to see what's really happening inside? I worked for a chiro in Tonganoxie and he was very thorough (but they want you to come all of the time). I watched this doctor successfully treat herniated disks and it was amazing to see the before & after x-rays.

When I moved back to KC after being gone for several years, I found another chiro who didn't want me to come as often and he didn't take x-rays. He ended up treating me the opposite way that he should have. He was pushing down on my back when that was just making my problem worse. I ended up back at the chiro I had worked for and he did x-rays and made everything better.

Trouble with a bulging/herniated disk or ruptured disk is that an ortho surgeon will want to do surgery right away and once those disks are fused together, there's no going back and there are complications with having back surgery (long term affects).

I'd suggest that he try another chiro who requires x-rays so they know he's adjusting his back properly for his problem. Surgery should be a last resort.

If you need a referal for a chiro, you can call the Cleveland Chiropractic School here in KC and they can probably refer you to someone.

Good luck and I hope his back starts to feel better.

(BTW, I am not a chiropractor - I'm an HR person who works at a hospital system - so you'd think I'd be telling you to go to a surgeon and have surgery, but I'm not.)

My husband is completing his orthopedic residency here in Kansas City he works in the group Orthopedic Surgeons Inc. located at North Kansas City Hopital. I read some one else had mentioned Dr. Paul and he is great, but none of those doctor in that group specialize in spine, so the residents do their spine training with Dr. Jackson in Kansas City. He is natioanlly known and is a great orthopedic surgeon, and he only deals with the back and spine! Good Luck.

Your husband really needs to get an MRI done - he'll probably need a referral from your PCP so he'll probably want to see him first. If you do need an Ortho, Dr. Robert Paul at North Kansas City is GREAT - I (unfortuneately) had to go to him this summer. He is in a group of Dr's (including his brother) at ###-###-####.

He should have some kind of xrays or an MRI taken to see if that is the problem. Here is another suggestions, he could have a uinary tract infection that sometimes causes low back pain. He should go to see a doctor.

I used to work for an Orthopedic group and if the chiropractor and message is not helping, then they are the next step. Most will not just rush into the surgery option. They can give him exercises and therapies that will possibly help the problem and they will most likely want to do an MRI to see how bad the problem is. A lot of times they can also try injections that will help before they turn to surgery. I don't know any in the area so there isn't one that I can recommend but try to find an Orthopedic doctor that specializes in the lower back region.

Agree with Mariana, I went to physical therapy after knee surgery and we discussed my lower back pain, I suggested that I might need to see a chiropractor, however the therapist showed me some specific stretching exercises that would ease the pressure on the sciatic nerve which runs from the back down the leg that may be causing the back pain, it really helps but you need to know the correct stretches for your issue, there are muscles back there we dont use and we need to stretch them out, the exercises are better than surgery and very simple

Hi K.,

I am not a doctor and I think that a regular doctor should see him because of the disc thing, that can get operated. If it is not too bad, I suggest to try pilates exercises for strengthening the back muscles, I have had severe back pains in the past, yes PAST!!!! Since I do pilates strengthening and lenghtening my back is great. My husband is having pack pain now and refuse to do the exercises, he every now and then do a few stretches but that's it, he says it helps but doesn't relieve completely. I do 3 days a week about 40 minutes and it has changed my life! I can't recommend what I do for him because it is very girlie :) but I got some DVDs for my hubby for back muscle strengthening, pilates or yoga can help too, I have heard people that swears yoga cured them. For me is a total body workout that is called the crunch, a lot of stretching and toning.
Ask a doctor but I am cured! Hope you find something that works too, back pain is no fun!
Good luck!
Mariana
